Been thinking about something. Do anyone know why the planes have to make a turn right after takeoff. Remember it as a bit uncomfortable. Why not take off, then fly at least a minute before making a huge turn? :)

There are noise sensitive areas and tall buildings in New York. You have to follow a Standard Instrument Departure, instructions given by the tower. At JFK some of the more complex departures and approaches take place. Some departures at JFK you have to turn left immediedly after take off and then 2 min later back to right. This is also to avoid incoming traffic landing on parallel runway. They are often using runway 13Left for takeoff and 13R for landings.

Look for the Canarsie approach.

Everything was good with this info besides the 13 left for takeoff and 13 R for landing. Whatever one runway 13 is doing so is the other. They are either both being used for landings or both for takeoffs, cant have to side and side runways going in opposite directions, due to air traffic issues and wind direction.

Not sure about JFK, but at Heathrow, when 27R is used for landings, 27L is used for take offs or vice versa, switched every day at 3pm and every other week

Using both 13L and 13R means you're going in the same direction. The opposite would be 31R and 31L, respectively.
