A nice, simple, Maharashi-inspired song ruined by too many overdubs and George Martin's needless strings and horns. Note also the whole recording was dropped to Db.
@jsmcguireIII I personaly love this song..I think it is nice just the way it is..The beatles loved to use dif instruments any ways..Paul loved that 20's sound.Peaceout
@ziggen2434 Brian Epstein was a genius, Martin was another "auteur" producer who wanted to impose his particular sound on those with the real talent. His cheesy mixes did bring in a wider-blander audience which made everyone money. His high point was certainly Sgt. Pepper, but after that, his production was mostly saccharine schmaltz.
@jsmcguireIII - i guess its tough to say. The sound shifted so quickly that everyone had to bring a creative element to the overall band. Not trying to convert anyone taste or opinion, the sound progressed way past Martin or any of the Beatles to be something on its own. Its my opinion that the weakest link (if that is indeed Martin) is as influential as the strongest just on the merit of the Beatles brilliance.
@jsmcguireIII What the fuck are you saying? Brian Epstein was important but was only the manager...George Martin was the man who followed them in every musical direction and gave his incalculable contribution to beatles music...maybe you are confusing with Phil Spector..."Martin was another "auteur" producer who wanted to impose his particular sound on those with the real talent"...what a bullshit...

I overlooked this song completely until I was riding through the mountains of West Virginia and it played on my iPod...I've never felt as serene as that day.
I agree with talalay. This is music, not this watered down/crappy muffled music of today. Of course there are exceptions but most of todays stuff is shit.
This is my favorite song of all time!!! Screw you jack white for butchering a masterpiece! Also how arrogant can u be to think u can change a song as beautiful as this; dumbass!
@wrd2thebigbird he wasnt arrogant for changing it, and he didnt change it anyway. he just made his own version of the song. the original is still unchanged, so why are you complaining? just dont listen to his version!
Please God, please tell me why Jack White's slaughtering of this beautiful melody has more views than this? Please God, tell me why people suck so much at liking real music.
@reetenbow not for what I understand, it was written for one of john lennons school teachers that was reading book with walrus in it to the class at the time of it's release.
@grevejp44 well listening to it, the lyrics are kinda trippy so what i always got from it was it was about being high, especially considering the end of the song. so i may be wrong but it really makes no sense either way.
@grevejp44 "I Am the Walrus" is a song with a bunch of nonsense lyrics inspired by multiple LSD trips and Lewis Carroll's poem about the walrus and the carpenter in "Through the Looking Glass."
I'm not going to write a five paragraph post on how great this song is, because The Beatles give songs that are to me, with out words, they are my favorite band, this song only helps the addiction :)
People still write music like this. I write songs like this, but good luck finding a record company to promote it. I hear and play stuff like this at the open mics. My stuff isn't as good as the Beatles, but at least I write from the heart not the wallet.
@jamesmichaelmelody the beatles played from heart... thats why people responded so much... paul's way of connecting with his audience was and is outstanding.. dont sit there and say he wrote from his wallet... if ur not getting attention/success, dont take it on them ...
justin beiber speaks from money.. not fuckin beatles...
@GeorgeMalcomMullenix...I'm very sorry to hear that. :( My mom passed away a year & a half ago. I played & sang Blackbird for her the day before she passed...I think of her every time I hear or play it.
@GeorgeMalcomMullenix sorry for you. but i understand the feeling you have. it makes her closer like she's there. alive in the song. may be i have "wish you where here" for my dad.
who is that one guy who thinks its funny that maybe just maybe that someone somewhere will write a comment expressing his hatred to that one person, oh wait, crap
@BeatlesAreLife89 I was listening to this on my mp3 player a warm summer day last year in our field out back. it was one of the rare and beautiful times i have experienced true perfection.
@pianissimo5 yeah thats so special to experience that. i was looking out my window and i live in the country and it was very moving to me. im like that i dream alot and take time to smell the flowers more than some people do. its a wonderful feeling.
@Cromag99 Why everybody who doesn't know much about the Beatles thinks John Lennon did everything? You would be surprised to know how many of the most famous Beatles songs were written by Paul McCartney.
@29noeld That's uncommon. The popular idea floating around is that John did everything in the Beatles. Only when people study the Beatles they get to know the importance of Paul (and George) as well in the band.
I love this song soo much, but am I the only one who can't hear the solo at the end? It's not really a solo, well, I'm not sure, but that's my favorite part:/
This song has a beautiful simplicity and lyrics. The remastering brings into relief the arrangement and production in the background.
However, the incongruous horns seem to vitiate the song's bucolic spirit. A sonorous solo cello would have fit better with the clip clop percussion that sounds like a horse.
I am loath to criticize the genius of the Beatles. But I believe this is one track George Martin would have removed had he insisted on paring down the White Album to a single LP.
damn good stuff. I also LOVE what Jack White did with it when he performed it at the White House for Paul! =]]]
