The flute is way too staccato. it sounds like the flautist just went for a run and is out of breath. Sounds horrible, if theyd just re-done the origonal style with a proper flute it wouldve sounded much better
Obviously the original 8-bit tracks tried to mimic actual instruments with electronic sounds, but that wasn't a stylistic choice, it was dictated by game support restrictions. If they had the chance to have an orchestra playing the score, they would have gone for it no doubt! So I don't see why the fanboys bitch about how the music sounds 'off' compared to the original thing. Of course it's off, it's midi sounds against actual music!
true, but they didnt just convert the midi tracks to orchestral, they also took some liberties with the style of the tracks. for example in this one, the flute is being played staccato, wich is not how the original track was presented. and in my opinion sounds far worse.
i think a direct translation from the midi track to orchestral music would have been great, but the way that they changed such memorable tracks in my opinion makes them sound far worse than thier origonal midi counterparts
I agree with you on that one, the sound of the flute isn't that great (probably because the 'start strong-end weak' sound that I've noticed from time to time once you brought up the issue). Not that it completely ruins the score, but a pan pipe would have suited this piece better.

It sounds like a pretty cool rendition, but then the flute comes in and ruins it! I really hope there's an option to switch to the original music in the game. Some of the new versions are okay, but mostly they don't sound kind of off.
The day this game comes to the Mac will be a joyous day.... -sigh-

Does anyone know what the lead instrument is here? Pan flute or tin whistle or something?
Fan666Maiden 2 years ago
Pretty sure its just a regular flute

@camjenkins88 - OK, Thanks.

@Fan666Maiden It sounds like an alto recorder to me. The sound is way too earthy/mellow to be a regular flute, they have a much brighter sound.

@Fan666Maiden
Doubt you care anymore but it's a recorder I think. Certainly has that sound.

i prefer the 1997 version because it was played (and all other songs in the game) by a real band.

You can switch to the original at the press of a button. Both the music and graphics change.

I'm fairly sure it's an Ocarina, or panpipes. And anything Michael Land touches is Gold, so this = Gold.
