What an amazing performer; Herr Lutz Forster (sorry I don't know how to spell his surname correctly on my keyboard here in Wales, there should be an umlaut on the 'o') is a magician. Less is so much more...
@bananzek - the singer is Sophie Tucker. I know that there are several cd's of her greatest hits, The Last of the Red Hot Mamas, and others. I have this on one of my cd's but I'm not sure which collection it is on. Check Amazon or Borders.
So much of the poignancy of this for me comes from the idea of the difficulty for a man to express homosexual desire (at the time she choreographed this). Here he is using the pre-existing heterosexual expression of desire (the woman's voice singing this song) and is trying to find a way to translate that into his own body. He is interpreting the desire found in the song into a new language that is his own. Yet he stands so still in a suit, his movements so restrained...
I LOVE UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I will never forget the impact "Nelken" had on me when I first saw it in Herodes Atticus Theatre in Athens twenty years ago. These are great souls coming on this earth to open our eyes and give meaning to our lives. Aufwiedersehen Pina...
This woman is simply amazing!!! She got to make a dance out of sign language... I might not like or comprehend everything she did but it is easy to see why she is regarded as a huge step forward in contemporary dance.
wow, this is one of the thoughest languages I guess.. respect for the people who bring beauty to the hearts of those who cannot hear.. I really don't get the funny part at 3.32 f.e. .. yet I wont be too serious on it. Thanks for posting!
@bercy130106 Amazing how context can change the impression of meaning, but I've often wondered if audiences laugh simply because they're unsure of what to feel, or embarrassed to allow themselves to be moved in public?
@supermaxim109 This interpretation is quite emotionally intence. I guess people laugh because they can't figure an adequate response of their feelings. It's probably as well true for the reasons you give.
I don`t like it.Sorry. The men are using the signs to express verbal language, but they don`t express music. In my humble opinion it would be better if they only dance or move a little bit what could express the music.
My god what a beauty. Look at this beautifull hands. All the feelings in his hands. The song is completly moving. My heart beats like crazy listening to him.
that is miss sophie tucker singing. last of the red hot mamas. when she started singing, they said she was too ugly to be white, and made her black up. g-d bless amerikkka.

This is indeed stunningly, movingly powerful. The signed gestures as a halfway station between dance on stage and the dance of the tongue in the mouth when it's used to articulate speech.
A lovely exercise in the search for the meaning of movement.
Interesting to note that there is mounting evidence from scientists like Rodolfo Llinas, Oliver Sacks, and William Calvin, that physical movement is the basis for all human mental activities. Movement is emotion.
