I deal with leather. If I were to walk a pattern the way you show in this video, the two pieces being joined would NOT sew out. Yo se to have a great deal of confidence in your technique. If this technique works for you given the materials you are using then more power to you. There is absolutely no way that would work in automotive seating or with leather.
I think the problem here is you are talking about automotive seating and I'm talking about a handbag. Techniques are used in different ways in different industries. You can't make a bag the same way you make a dress. I'm positive walking the pattern in automotive seating is different than handbags. So maybe , just maybe we are both correct. I always wondered how they get the seats so tight? Great pattern making to say the least.
That is NOT the correct way to walk a pattern. The point of walking a pattern is to simulate stitching your pieces together, insuring the length is right on the pieces being sewn. The awl should have been at the stitch line not on the perimeter.
The point of walking the pattern is to (measure) get the distance around the corners or circle for the gusset. Period! Not to simulate anything. If you do it the way you suggest your gusset will come out too short. Reason the stitch line is always inside of your patterns outer edge. The edges of your fabric pieces have to be the same. If your stitch is 1/8" inside the perimeter. Then how do you get the true measurement of your gusset going around your master pattern ? You can't.
@mrj10011 Besides going to F.I.T in NYC I worked in a factory on 27th street making patterns for a living. If you like I can get a friend who teaches at F.I.T now and was a sample maker for coach to verify my techniques. I can also get my instructor too. To validate the technique. I don't teach things that are wrong.
You should make video's on how to make handbags your way!

I gotta try this. Pretty interesting. I'll do a coin purse out of Vegetable leather and see if this works. Thanks.
