A breath hold is not necessary but can be recommended if the patient is able to. Also to set the goal you have to calculate based on kg. (Wt in kg x 3) x 5ml this will give you a rough estimate of what the patient should be able to do in ml.
A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand(SORRY BOUT SPAM THIS REALLY FREAKS ME)
That is the wrong way to explain it to the pt. Pt needs to gently exhale out and take a slow deep breath, and hold it for 3 to 6 seconds. It is to prevent or reverse atelectasis.
Thumbs down for the so called RT. An IS is usually used for breathing exercise, keeping the alveoli open, and used with post-op patients. Not hard to explain unless you have no idea what you are talking about.

Geee I guess you don't want to cough either...What about a nice 5-6 second breath hold to equalize pressure in the lungs. Glad this is not my RT.
