The deal was on the table for more than ten yrs. Hamas came into power in 2005. So its not b/c of Hamas it was rejected. Plus, the refugees (all of them)were accepeted by Arabs to go into the Palastianian state if ISrael would give up more land in the north(1967 borders),its not logical to put all of these people in the wesk bank, they wouldnt fit, and of definetly not in Gaza. But of course this also have been rejected.

How was it counter offensive? The Haganah and other army like gangs were sweaping the country with terrosrism(king david hotel explosion, train tracks explosions, assasinations, ect...) and by 1948 waged a war against every Palestinian, they commited mass murder and mass expulsion of every possible village b/c the Palestinians refused to give 50% of THEIR land to 10% of the population(Jews). The other Arab nations came to the rescue(counter offensive) just like any neighbor or relative would do.
