Hah. I do the exact same thing with them, except try to open up with a Toxic Cloud right around the corner. Toxic Cloud is just too useful for hitting enemies with status effects, and slowing them down period.
Though I'll admit, that gaping hole on your right flank got me really nervous in the first few rounds.
So now, off to Bayjin (And back to having fire spells again.)

You should get him back anyways, since you get a gadget item right out the door that is will give him some serious single-hit firepower.
