For 1966 NASCAR (hurt by lower attendance) allowed the Hemi to return on all tracks. They even welcomed the Cammer, but handed it a 427 lb penalty to discourage the use of overhead cams
A few Cammers were installed in 1964 Galaxies, photo-graphed and paraded before journalists, but none actually rolled off the lines, which put NASCAR in a quandary. Chrysler had a double-overhead-cam Hemi waiting in the wings should the Ford SOHC prove dominant
@bubblejomay the only reason why ford didnt put the cammer in full production was because they didnt want a sixteen year old kid jumping into a 650+ hp car with no experience... Well maybe not the only reason but it is one reason...
@anthony1bad351 Same was said about the race hemi, 500 had to be produced to qualify them to be used in NASCAR. Street hemi's were more available but only 500 race hemi's.
Great car, There is an almost identical 61 Starliner over here in the UK with a 427SOHC w/4speed fitted. The guy who whom i know lives fairly near me also runs i think a 65or66 Galaxie with a 427 Tunnel Port fitted. Both super straight stock looking cars with incredible detail to factory look instalation, and original appearance. Both street driven, both very quick.
@joncaddy Well, guess what. If any of you ever saw "Standing in the Shadows of Mowtown" you will notice the scene where the Funk Bros. were riding in the station wagon it had a tag on the front that said SOHC, hmm, I wonder where that car is.
Ya when ford came out with the cammer and nothing could catch it nascar banned it because everyone was crying they couldnt win a race anymore. Im suprised they didn't ban bob glidden since he was winning so many with ford motors.
@68bobba1 Yes, but it was tested at Daytona in a 1964 Galaxie and without pushing the car all out it turned the fastest lap to date. GM and Chrysler both got the blues quick and began crying. But where Ford blew it, the knew they had to sell 500 to the public to be eligible for NASCAR and they would not do it. IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@bubblejomay Ford didn,t plan for the Cammer to be a production engine obviously...it was a quick fix to match the Chrysler Hemi...which it did...your right,..Ford should have planned for a milder street Cammer to make it eligible for Nascar...but when you think about it...a fast lap at Daytona doesn,t make for a 500 mile race winning engine...Chrysler found that out with the early 426 Hemis
@ford351cmustang Actually ford built this because they knew they were gonna get raped by chrysler because of what chrysler was doing with race hemis. When chrysler saw this they built a dual overhead cam hemi prototype and threatened ford with it and nascar got pissed at both ford and chrysler. They said no cammer, and either did away with the chrysler hemi for a minute or just handicapped it.So ford made the tunnel port 427 and then the cj,and eventually the boss 429.With chrysler hemis being...
@ford351cmustang ...handicapped and ford not having the cammer they both mdecided the next logical step was to improve aerodynamics to make up for lack of power. That all got out of control when the daytonas and superbirds were going to fast and nascar got pissed again and shut that down too,and that's about when the modern nascar setup came to be.Even that has been improved tp the point that they need restrictor plates to slow em down.
@ford351cmustang The 427, the basis for the Cammer, first came out in 1963, where they produced mixed results in NASCAR racing (the premier series for manufacturers). Joe Weatherly won the driver championship in a Pontiac, but Ford took the manufacturer's championship anyway. In 1964 Chrysler introduced the 426 Hemi, which outpaced the 427 Ford
@KallieRen Dont feel bad. I have 4 of them 1 being my prize still in the crate, factory alum head nascar motor, my Ed Pink built one and 2 standard all iron ones. They look nice next to my tunnels and high risers. Now the shocker and giver of my age. I bought the crate and most expensive 1 from the original owner at a Swap meet at the Ford plant in Milpitas CA for $1,500.00 at around noon that day, nobody had even asked the guy how much he wanted for it. You cant have to many FE Fords i say
@Race62hud I sure miss my fe motors since ive been messing with 350 chevys they just dont have the power of the fe. My friends 454 doesnt even run as good as my old 427 fe so im selling all my chebbie stuff and going fe hunting because ive really missed the whiplash effect they give you.
This engine was the only engine ever banned from NASCAR lol. it had too much of an advantage i guess. i love ford for how innovative they have always been.
@68bobba Actually it was GM that complained. Both the Chrysler Hemi and the 427 SOHC were banned by NASCAR. The 427 SOHC also had hemispherical combustion chambers.
It wasn't a compaint from FORD. NASCAR themselves actually banned Fords Hemi as well. Even the Ford Cammer heads were banned. In fact is was the Cammer that made NASCAR to decide to bann both Chrysler and Ford Hemi's.
Actually zackc the 427 SOHC was in very very few, factory mustangs they were called A/FX or factory experimental, there were some made. promise you :)
Cammers had a good 100+ hp. and tq. more than the hemi and the mustang was lighter than any car chrysler had at the time so im pretty sure Ford raped mopar
@zackc120 So Ford bought the Cammer out in the Mustang huh?.....thats news to me....you sound like one of those people who still think the Hemis ALL made only 425hp....Like I said the Cammer had its moments in drag racing, but no where near as successful as the Chrysler Hemi
@68bobba the cammer was a hemi to it was made for nascar but chrysler though a fit about it said it was a unfair avatage and they didnt come out in mustangs not the cammer they came out in the fairlane and were bought over the parts counter they did have more hourse power then the chrysler hemi With a single carburetor they were rated at 616 horsepower at 6,500 rpm & 515 ft lbs of torque @ 3,800 rpm, and while equipped with dual carburetors they made 657 horsepower at 7,000 rpm
@jdavis332 The Cammer never came out in ANY production car mate....the Cammer was an aftermarket crate motor....Chrysler rated all their Hemi motors at 425hp(,both street and race)....this was no where near the truth...the street Hemi made over 500hp,while the race Hemi was close to 700hp....the 1968 Hurst Hemi Darts were doing less than 10.5 seconds over 400m...
@68bobba well my dart doest do no 10.5 seconds and it has a hemi its even built up but it is fast 12.2 i like chrysler but my old 1964 fairlane with a 427 side oiler smokes my dart and my buddeys chevy and its almost stock just has a cam and a 4 barrel carb but look that cammer was design to go head to head with the hemi but it was banned from nascar because of chrysler protested the engine they said it was a unfair avantage o yea your right they were only bought over the counter sorry
@jdavis332 You own a Hurst Hemi Dart do you?....with the fibreglass panels, lightweight body and race Hemi engine?.....Big difference between one and a stock Dart with a Hemi in it....Ford never made a car that would come close to Hurst Hemi Dart over 400m
@68bobba that is true the 427 cammer was not in any production car cammer was aftemarket that why nascar wouldnt let the cammer or SOHC because of that. But ford dyno the motor and they got with single four-barrel it was rated at 616 horse power with dual quad it was rated at 657 at 8000 rpm that why they use these motor into rail back then just putting it out there
@catwalkcody However, Chrysler protested the engine, and it was banned from use in NASCAR. However, the engine found its home in NHRA competition, both with factory and private teams. and that two sorry
My brother in law had a (I think it was) a '66 Tbird landau with a 428 or 429; we were on East-West Highway (Very curvy & Hilly) and he wanted to show me how the Speedometer went from Silver to Red when you hit 60 MPH or faster. I was terrifed and told him "I Believe You, you Have to Slow this thing Down before you Kill us!" He said he wished the car had a tape player, and when he pushed on the "shuttering" going down the dash, low & behold it had an 8 track built in.
@OpionatedOldMan 427 and 428 are internal differences (428 is longer stroke, smaller bore). 429 is an entirely different engine (basically a shorter stroke 460).
@RotaryJunkie - Thanks! When I was a kid, I worked on a mercury cougar with I think it was a 428; the engine had to be jacked aside to change the plugs in it. The Doctor who owned it, said he never had put the pedal to the floor, because he was too afraid of what might happen. The hood had a Cougar walking on a tree limb in black matt paint; the only one I'd ever seen like that - Amazing piece of American Muscle, when we Owned the car industry...
@OpionatedOldMan Heh. I actually have memories of going for a ride with my dad when I was very little in a 428 '69 Cougar... Definitely a car I want to eventually have in my life but you know what they say about your childhood hero cars...
@p51mustange1 And for that matter, the majority of Shelby Cobras did not even have cammer motors in them. They had top and side oilers and even 428's. Do some research, and you'll find out a lot. I was surprised to read that they used the 428 in them.
@5191keith Ford had three more. Two were put in cougars and given as a gift to I beleive Don Nichols and another guy who was sponsered by Ford in drag racing and one more in their King Cobra for nascar but never raced.
I recognize that place. I visited a McDonald's 10 years ago in Phoenix Az. This must be the same place. A lot of sick cars there including a 67 Yenko Camaro.
@5191keith Yeah, I hear 'ya Keith. I have no inclination to buy it. But I never heard about a build like that either. But I will say this...the car had all kinds of stuff piled around it, so I didn't open the doors, but looking thru the glass...and especially under the hood...it looked like the barn find it sort of is. Sure, someone could have shoehorned that 427 in there yrs. ago, but why? The car looked totally legit. I've still got the guy's number. What a shame it's a 4 door. A shame.
@5191keith This past June in a teensy little Nebraska town I laid eyes on...in an outbuilding none-the-less...a 64 Ford 4 door with a 427 R-code (two 4 bbls) and 4 speed in it. The guy has hidden it, basically. I didn't want to ask how much, as I just kind of had the feeling that it might insult him. I wasn't going to buy it anyway. I feel a 4 door is an absolute waste of that drivetrain. Anybody know just how rare that piece is? It is ALL ORIGINAL / ALL STOCK. Baby blue exterior...orig.
I read somewhere that Ford made more Boss 429 engines than Mustangs to put them in....So cars like Galaxies and Fairlanes of that year(69) may have ended with the 429 motor in the engine bay
@68bobba I could be wrong, but I never heard of a Boss 429 in anything but a Mustang. In 1970 I was 15. My buddy's dad bought him a '69 Boss 429. White with black guts. He lived in Apache Junction, Az.-the middle of nowhere. On his property was an abandoned asphalt air strip. Even w/out driver's licenses, we just tore that Boss up on that strip! One thing I remember, and I played sports then and was in good shape....that clutch was a real bitch to press down for me. I haven't driven one since.
if any of you get to the apopka fl. area there is a fellow in town that has 7 or 8 of the 427 sohc. engines. 2 that i know of are in cars and running. one is in a 62-3 mercury parklane conv. the other is in a 69 orig boss 429 car. if any one would like to check them out i can get you in touch with him.
boy howdy, what an absolutely beautiful car. good friend of mine's boyfiend - who she later married - had a starliner with what must have been s 289 or 352. it was red-on-red and was just stunning when freshly washed and waxed.
back to this car. i didn't realize they put ford 427's in 1961 full-bodied fords.
at any rate, check out the wide headed on that rascal.
I would like to have any 427 Ford produced ! have an 80 crown vic 2 door that one would be very nice in ! A friend has a 63 1/2 street version galaxie 427 , 4 spd , 4.30 gear ; bone stock down to the dog dish hubcaps . fiberglass teardrop scoop hood special ordered on it . all steel except for that . runs 12.8 with 9 in . slicks ! VERY NICE CAR ; RARE ENGINE ! LOVE THOSE 60`S big FORDS & MERCS !
@bigorangetrucker Raped the hell out of the Hemi,s?....the Cammer had its moments in drag racing but I,d hardly call it that....Chrysler Hemi engines or engines based on them have won more drag races than Cammers ever will
@bigorangetrucker Lighten up mate!!...So ,your admitting the Hemi is a better engine than the Cammer?....bet that hurt.....Ford fucked up by not bringing out a milder street version of the Cammer, then we would have seen which engine was really the best...
Vans1107-Having watched your "Fruity Loops" videos I can see that you are an expert on the concept of "slapped together". Instead of posting negative comments about cars that you have not seen, in places that you have not been, and questioning the honesty of people that you have not met,let me make a suggestion. When you are putting together your next car try not to get so much glue on the parts when you take them out of the box. And if you need help, ask a grown up !
ok "jamie" not sure how my taste in music has anything to do with this video, but i wasn't making a negative comment about the car itself, i was commenting on the fact that his "craigslist" story sounded like bullshit, plus the car isnt even yours, so i dont know why the hell you care if im questioning the description of the video, but im sure you have all the knowledge in the world when it comes to putting a car together right, cause you're such a grown up being a whole 6 years older than me..
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i dont think theres much truth to the story you heard then..any car that sits outside exposed to the elements for 30 plus years is going to need a LITTLE bit more than just a "fresh tank of gas" to get it running again let alone moving even...the brakes would probably be siezed with rust along with the car having surface rust all over it from faded/thin paint...this car looks way to good to be slapped together in 4 days..
vans1107, try learning a bit more about cars before you make silly comments. It's ENTIRELY possible to get one running and the brakes working etc in 4 days. Doesn't take long to replace rubber fuel lines, clean, bleed and adjust the brakes etc. By the way, I've been wrenching on cars more than twice as long as you've been alive. Been there, Done that, got the scars to show for it.
Its not much of a classic but its a 1985 Mercury Cougar XR7 with a 302 5-speed. The engine was swapped in by me and has been warmed up, I went with it mainly because it was different and you rarely see them on the road anymore.
screw that i'm tired everybody doing all this badass paint & body work to these cars that are meant to be driven like that motor wants to be driven. I've seen it happen to many freakin times, if he paints it it'll become a trailer queen and sit in the garage and hardly ever get driven. and when it does it'll be with kid gloves & the fear of scratching it. so please screw the paint job, at least till he's run the shit out of it.
Shit I'd give it a good coat of paint and clear and beat that car like it owed me money. Cars are meant for driving not being trailered everywhere and not driven.
@vans1107 The car was in ARIZONA!!! Not a whole lot of "elements" there except for hot dry sun! Besides, I know that car. It belonged to a guy named Dick Hinson who used to live in Colorado, before he moved to Arizona, and yea, when he passed away, his family sold the car on Craig's List!
@saludahead Do you have any idea how much this car sold for? I kinda have the feeling I don't want to know, hehe. I'll bet the new owner stole it, practically. God, what a find.
Now, this past June, in Nebraska, in an old outbuilding, I saw what is supposedly a factory 427 Ford R-Code (2 x 4bbls) in a 4 door Galaxie. The guy swears it's all factory. Does anyone know if this is for real. It sure looked it to me. Thanks Joel in Tucson
@naderchaser To tell you the truth, neither do I! He parked it because of the gas mileage, and he just never go the itch to drive it again after true leaded premium gasoline became unattainable.
Now as far as the four door goes, yes these monsters were in deed created! They were designated "Police Interceptor", and some of them had some seriously hairy shit under the hood! I remember a retired Police Chief who had a '69 Fairlane 4 door with a complete Boss 429 under the hood!

@p51mustange1 And for that matter, the majority of Shelby Cobras did not even have cammer motors in them. They had top and side oilers and even 428's. Do some research, and you'll find out a lot. I was surprised to read that they used the 428 in them.

@p51mustange1,, jay leno has a real 66 427 cobra with a S.O.H.C. 427 in it. i've seen it on jay leno's garage. that car has to WICKEDLY FAST!!

I recognize that place. I visited a McDonald's 10 years ago in Phoenix Az. This must be the same place. A lot of sick cars there including a 67 Yenko Camaro.
mrgears 1 year ago
@5191keith Yeah, I hear 'ya Keith. I have no inclination to buy it. But I never heard about a build like that either. But I will say this...the car had all kinds of stuff piled around it, so I didn't open the doors, but looking thru the glass...and especially under the hood...it looked like the barn find it sort of is. Sure, someone could have shoehorned that 427 in there yrs. ago, but why? The car looked totally legit. I've still got the guy's number. What a shame it's a 4 door. A shame.

quik9r 1 year ago

68bobba 1 year ago
@68bobba I could be wrong, but I never heard of a Boss 429 in anything but a Mustang. In 1970 I was 15. My buddy's dad bought him a '69 Boss 429. White with black guts. He lived in Apache Junction, Az.-the middle of nowhere. On his property was an abandoned asphalt air strip. Even w/out driver's licenses, we just tore that Boss up on that strip! One thing I remember, and I played sports then and was in good shape....that clutch was a real bitch to press down for me. I haven't driven one since.

boy howdy, what an absolutely beautiful car. good friend of mine's boyfiend - who she later married - had a starliner with what must have been s 289 or 352. it was red-on-red and was just stunning when freshly washed and waxed.
back to this car. i didn't realize they put ford 427's in 1961 full-bodied fords.

Ford 427 Cammers raped the hell out of The Hemi's of years gone by. To bad they are so damn expensive to build, or buy!
bigorangetrucker 2 years ago 6
@bigorangetrucker Raped the hell out of the Hemi,s?....the Cammer had its moments in drag racing but I,d hardly call it that....Chrysler Hemi engines or engines based on them have won more drag races than Cammers ever will
68bobba 9 months ago
well i certainly hope so douchebag. there was a hell of a lot more of them made than the 427 cammer. way to put out the blinding obvious dildo.
bigorangetrucker 9 months ago

And if you need help, ask a grown up !
diggs333 2 years ago 3
ok "jamie" not sure how my taste in music has anything to do with this video, but i wasn't making a negative comment about the car itself, i was commenting on the fact that his "craigslist" story sounded like bullshit, plus the car isnt even yours, so i dont know why the hell you care if im questioning the description of the video, but im sure you have all the knowledge in the world when it comes to putting a car together right, cause you're such a grown up being a whole 6 years older than me..
vans1107 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
i dont think theres much truth to the story you heard then..any car that sits outside exposed to the elements for 30 plus years is going to need a LITTLE bit more than just a "fresh tank of gas" to get it running again let alone moving even...the brakes would probably be siezed with rust along with the car having surface rust all over it from faded/thin paint...this car looks way to good to be slapped together in 4 days..
vans1107 2 years ago
dude its a Ford
you can do alot in 4 days
hacktheplanet90 2 years ago 3
vans1107, try learning a bit more about cars before you make silly comments. It's ENTIRELY possible to get one running and the brakes working etc in 4 days. Doesn't take long to replace rubber fuel lines, clean, bleed and adjust the brakes etc. By the way, I've been wrenching on cars more than twice as long as you've been alive. Been there, Done that, got the scars to show for it.
jakespop56 2 years ago 3
well good for you buddy..all i was trying to say is the car looks a little too clean to have sat outside in the elements for 30 years
vans1107 2 years ago
There is this thing you can do to a car called "Painting" it works wonders....
bpowersman5000 2 years ago
ya well unless you want it coming out like a maaco job, i'd say it takes a little longer than 4 days to strip, prep and paint a car
vans1107 2 years ago 2
Not for someone who knows what he is doing. I have done it but I am a painter.
bpowersman5000 2 years ago
and what kind of classic car do you have?
aaronjam99 2 years ago
Its not much of a classic but its a 1985 Mercury Cougar XR7 with a 302 5-speed. The engine was swapped in by me and has been warmed up, I went with it mainly because it was different and you rarely see them on the road anymore.
bpowersman5000 2 years ago
screw that i'm tired everybody doing all this badass paint & body work to these cars that are meant to be driven like that motor wants to be driven. I've seen it happen to many freakin times, if he paints it it'll become a trailer queen and sit in the garage and hardly ever get driven. and when it does it'll be with kid gloves & the fear of scratching it. so please screw the paint job, at least till he's run the shit out of it.
pomposo11 2 years ago 2
Shit I'd give it a good coat of paint and clear and beat that car like it owed me money. Cars are meant for driving not being trailered everywhere and not driven.
bpowersman5000 2 years ago 3
@vans1107 The car was in ARIZONA!!! Not a whole lot of "elements" there except for hot dry sun! Besides, I know that car. It belonged to a guy named Dick Hinson who used to live in Colorado, before he moved to Arizona, and yea, when he passed away, his family sold the car on Craig's List!
saludahead 1 year ago
@saludahead Do you have any idea how much this car sold for? I kinda have the feeling I don't want to know, hehe. I'll bet the new owner stole it, practically. God, what a find.
Now, this past June, in Nebraska, in an old outbuilding, I saw what is supposedly a factory 427 Ford R-Code (2 x 4bbls) in a 4 door Galaxie. The guy swears it's all factory. Does anyone know if this is for real. It sure looked it to me. Thanks Joel in Tucson
naderchaser 1 year ago
@naderchaser To tell you the truth, neither do I! He parked it because of the gas mileage, and he just never go the itch to drive it again after true leaded premium gasoline became unattainable.
Now as far as the four door goes, yes these monsters were in deed created! They were designated "Police Interceptor", and some of them had some seriously hairy shit under the hood! I remember a retired Police Chief who had a '69 Fairlane 4 door with a complete Boss 429 under the hood!
