You click the character in Director Mode, click on "Say" and import the .wav file. If you use anything other than .wav, their lips will not move with the dialogue.

do you use any sort of audio converter to get it to .wav? For managing audio, I use Audacity, which is a fun program, but it only saves as .aud. also, I have audio saved as .avi. how do you make programs .wav?

I use QuickTime Pro to convert my sound files to .wav

If you don't have QT Pro, you can get a program called Switch or another audio program you can google to change your audio files to .wav
