Indeed there are some rare gems on YouTube and I am glad I found this. I get really annoyed that there are websites that allow people to buy LEGAL MP3 tracks, but you have to be an employee of a radio station to get them and then have to cough yup £50 a month to get 25 songs . Still, gripe over. Great record, got to number 5 in UK chart. Was made popular after Noel Edmunds started playing it on his Sunday morning show on Radio 1.
Ah excellent. For some reason this song came into my head a couple of days ago and I've been searching through my old record collection looking for the disc - all to no avail. Brilliant to hear it again.
At the risk of showing my age, I can remember this being in the charts. It was on Top of the Pops, and I named my pet snake Hissing Sid. I was only 10 or 11.
Captain Beaky was rock hard. This historical recording of his career was from 1980. By 2003 he was general Beaky and in charge of the parachute regiment. He was quietly pensioned off after a disagreement with that jug eared para pretender, Prince Charles. Beaky said that we should slaughter every man, woman and child for victory. Charles said that we should capture all their potted plants and negotiate with them and get the Iraqi flora to uprise.
I remember watching this on the BBC when I was a child. Penelope Keith and Keith Michell along with Harry Seacombe with an assortment of other talent read these poems to music. I believe there were two programs one aired at Christmas and had a group of choirboys singing a Christmas song about Captain Beaky's Band. Thank you for sharing this! :-)
I too have had the words "and leaping off said 'FOLLOW ME!' and ran head first into a tree!" in my mind since I was a child. I can't believe I've found it have been telling my husband for 40 years about this song and he didn't know it...Tonight I will reveal the mystery words to him...LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT

I stumbled across the wildest stuff on youtube, and this is one of them. Never heard of it, was it just a song or was it like a children's tv program?
@gotch09 It was a hit single in the UK, reaching #5 in the singles chart in 1980. I believe the story within the song was based on a series of children's books, but I can't be sure.
@owenandrew2702 You are correct. They were written by the Britih actor Jeremy Lloyd - well known for playing the chinless upper class twit in countless films & TV programmes.
@gotch09 It was from a book of poems by Jeremy Lloyd, published in about 1975. A selection of the poems were released on an album in 1977, recited by various celebrities. The music was composed by Jim Parker who generally specialised in TV music, hence the 'pit orchestra' sound. It was huge at the time. I was in hospital when the second album was released in 1980 and that's more or less all we heard for a month!
"...and leaping off said 'FOLLOW ME!' and ran head first into a tree!" - this has stayed with me as one of the funniest things i heard as a kid. Brilliant

Fabulous to hear this again! Took me back to when my little boy was a baby (some baby-6'1" now) He had a pillow case with all the characters on (it's still in my airing cupboard-is that sad)? Thanks for posting.
I was also too old to enjoy stuff like this when it came out but it didn't stop me from buying it either!!! Now I play it to my kids and they just look at me like I'm a dill, they just don't get it, perhaps at 5 and 9 their too young!!!
Your kids look at you funny, I think I know what you mean as my wife looks at me the same way when I play it. Who cares. I also love the film The Princes Bride, (so does my wife). " My name is Inigo Montoya etc"
The BBC would ban this these days.
