I was sorry to hear she retired. Her Dad had skated against Dick Button years ago and they were friends. Her Mom had been a speed skater.I had read that she had to go to Germany to train as the only rink in Budapest ( and Hungary ) had burned in the late 1990s.I later read that Krizstina had gone to medical school.I doubt her Father is still living tho.
I think Gusmeroli's Mask program was brilliant, and deserved to win. This program was indeed second best, though. For the record, I don't think Chen Lu should have been 25th, either. She probably should have been at least 5 spots higher.
Nice job, but I wouldn't go so far to say that she should have won the short program. Her jumps were terrific and the overall program was great, but the quality of her skating skills allowed room for the judges to nitpick. She had several wobbly edges, especially on her spiral sequence. Even before the new system, the little things made a difference, and all the skaters ahead of her were much stronger with their edges, transitions, choreography, musical interpretation, posture and so forth.
Placing this performance 5th was scandulous. I agree she totally should have beaten Butyrskaya, Kwan (although Kwan's performance outside her one big mistake was outstanding, it was a big mistake unfortunately), and I agree even Lipinski. The only one who had a better short was maybe Gusmeroli. The only really there wasnt much controversy about her placing here is she is from an unpowerful country in the sport with no influence.
She deserved to win the SP, and by far. The jumps were great (even though for once she had no superb double axel) and come one triple-triple toe and triple lutz is much more difficult than the other contenders.
The spins, steps, spirals were complex and easily presented. The choreography is intricate, she skated it so well and she was so much in the rythm.
The marks were LU-DI-CROUS not to mention the fifht spot! booo!
I watched this back in '97 and besides me being a long-time true Czako fan, I think this SP performance was no doubt top 3. Also underscored in LP. Oh well, the old system was faulty anyways and this was the height of the corruption era and mysterious biased results.
Hey - Mao used this music in her '10 SP. Didn't know it had been used before.

It always seems that doing a 3 toe-3 toe as your combination in the SP NEVER pays off technically as doing a 3 lutz-2 toe.

Are her parents still living? Her Dad was pretty old and had competed against Dick Button many years ago.

Well her father is still living while her mother passed away. She also became a mother on July 6, 2007 to a son

@stefrevollo Nah, 5th place was correct. Her skating lacks fluidity and excitement. Lots of sloppy edges. The spiral sequence was especially bad.

Gusmeroli and Czako had the 2 best shorts. If it were marked on merit this would be the results in the short:
1. Gusmeroli or Czako, 2. Gusmeroli or Czako.
3. Lipinski. 4. Kwan or Butyrskaya. 5. Butyrskaya or Kwan. 6. Slutskaya

She should have been first or second for sure, fifth was totally ridiculous

with this short she was 2nd
Kori1958 4 years ago
absolutely should have been higher! at least ahead of Kwan and Butyrskaya, and dare I say Lipinski...
I would have been happy with 3rd, though.
