@Steve10578 I had a Spectrum back in the day and I always defended it. The C64 & BBC had similar processors (6510/6502 against the Speccy's Z80A) but the sound and graphics were slightly better. The Spectrum had more RAM available to use then the C64 (which used bank switching because the CPU could only address 64K of memory at at time which included both ROM & RAM) and at 48K was more than the BBC. I've played games on a C64 emulator and the feel is similar to the Speccy.
Sir Clive was a genius. Yes, the Spectrum was techically inferior to the competition (C64, Amstrad CPC464 and BBC Model B) but it was more popular despite a few faulty machines. Betamax videos were technically superior to VHS but VHS was more popular and endured for over 20 years.
@Parknest - I would not say the Spectrum was inferior to the BBC Model B. Also depending on software sometimes the Spectrum version looked and performed better then the C64 and the CPC versions of the same software. What the C64 versions always excelled at was in the sound department though.
Sir Clive is a technical genius, but a comparatively poor businessman (I mean.. The C5.. The Zike?). Sir Alan is a brilliant businessman who's never claimed to be a technical genius.
here's an idea that works, buy a computer company for 5 Million , axe its most popular model so you can sell more of your own, then watch as your own computer brand disappears in to the abyss. never to be seen again. nice one.
Alan Sugar ain't a cunt, he's a top businessman, he came from nothing and now he's a billionaire, a Knight then a Lord, who's given millions to charity. How is he a cunt?
@johnnywonderful14 Yeah me too. I read his book, he literally had f all. He just took advantage of the little opportunities presented to him, enjoyed it, and had a bit of luck along the way, and made a shitload of money! He made mistakes too, like going into football , otherwise he could have been twice as rich as he is now
@amit77 I don't understand why some people hate on him, it's just pure jealousy. It's not like his mum and dad were filthy rich and gave him everything on a plate. Sure he had help from them but it was because he worked hard and was a genius in business. People who start with nothing and end up having millions and create thousands of jobs for people deserve respect lol.
@TalonMercenary You trying to tell me he doesn't have 500 mill stashed away somewhere? You are naive . OFFICIALLY he has 800 million pounds yes, but these businessmen ALWAYS have extra cash, off shore , which my law they don't have to declare
As someone commented below Sir Clive was an innovator, but his products were badly engineered and unreliable. I've a few of his old calculators in my collection, they're amazing they are 40 years old, can do arctan, arccos etc. functions, fit in your pocket and cost less than £30 new. But Christ they're badly put together.
Clive always over reached he wanted innovation, aesthetics and low price. Three very difficult things to bring together. But full respect for his efforts.
In fairness to Sugar, he knew how to scale a business, he understands logistics. Sinclair was throughout his career dogged by production problems, Clive should have employed someone like Sugar to take over the day to day running of the company.
But my respect and affection is really for Sir Clive and it's sad to see that while Sinclair's Speccys have made in England printed on the back Amstrads "Sinclair" Spectrums were made in China.
One of the saddest moments ever. Even here in Spain, where the Sinclair market was really big. Take a look on the SirClive's eyes... almost crying for the lose.
@numberwang2020 Many thanks for passing this information to me! I like this music video of the pop song "Clive Sinclair" by Electric Disorder and added it to my favourites immediately.
the QL was too fowarded in the future for that moment.People as usual did not understand. What a pity for the developement of the personal computer!!!UncleClive Sinclair remain a genius,a real mad genius, not a businessman! I begun my experience with the spectrum in 1982.....at that time we hated COMMODOR,and expecially APPLE USERS!!!,apple was expensive and crapple!!!.......Time changes, but seeing this video, make me fell like when i was 12-13 years old....A BIG UP FOR "UNCLE CLIVE"sinclaire
@bedsitter1982 But as Apple has shown over the last decade, it's the combination of both that you require to make your products succeed. Unfortunately if the two sides look at each other as if they were alien, then you won't be able build a brand of products with positive connotations. To me Sinclair represented innovation, forward thinking, shoddy engineering, lousy marketting. Sugar represented great marketing, reliability, copycat ideas...
@bedsitter1982 Im sorry what was the CPC 464 & 6128... The creation of integrated Hifi units that could compete with the likes of Sony. Sugar was one of the few men in recent British history, that came close to producing a world class company that could sell internationally. This country wouldnt be in half the mess its in, if we had a few more alan sugars. Instead all we have are useless bankers and overpaid civil servants...
@madcapoperator Yeah, I'm not even British and I'm getting that impression. He's the host of your version of The Apprentice, right? I've seen the clips and he's an even bigger douche than Donald Trump. It's unfortunate that he bears such a close resemblance to Nolan Bushnell, a man I admire and respect.
