Saw this show at Blossom Music Center in Cleveland, Oh. This was the single greatest rock drum performance I've ever seen. Kenny Aronoff beat the crap out of that drum set, and it was simply amazing.
I saw him sing this in concert about a month ago, he hasn't lost his voice. One of the greatest songs of all time by the greatest songwriters of all time!!
time has changed for the older gerenation and now its time for the younger generation too awaken cause it will not be easy in the coming years ahead so check it out !!!!
My Ex Girlfriend Said What Is This Shit!! The Last time I Seen Her was When i Pulled Over The Side Off The Road And Kicked Her Out Off My Car.. So worth Being single for :P
I like this one and 'ain't even done w/ the night' and 'jackie brown' and 'human wheels'... I remember calling this guy John Couger! Whatever happened to this cat? Last time I heard he was a Plumber in Cleveland. He needs some new stuff pronto!
I almost cried. I searched Check It Out trying to find this song and the first suggestion YouTube gave me was Check It Out by Nicki Minaj. What is happening to music? :/ I'm only fourteen but I would rather listen to John over any other singer on the radio. R.I.P to real Rock n' Roll.
When music wasn't only sex stories, and musicians specialized in the art of music without also having to be dancers and porn stars on stage. A singer was a singer, a guitarist played guitar, etc.
@200357846 I am so happy to hear someone say that..U2 was my band, SRV tops everything, Zepplin , Stones are awesome.. Shakirah is Mrs. Music, quality, intgegrity. Watch WE are the World video, many real musicians there.
@200357846 You got to understand that most people today don't have a thought in their head that does not have something to do with their genitals..Sex is gooood but restraint and measure makes it better.
i was there when they made this video ! the back up singers were AMAZING as well as his violinist! because this was filmed so close to Bloomington, they added another concert night. 90% of this video was filmed (i'm in the audience 'somewhere') and then the last part was the filming from the 2nd night
ATTN: randomspewerdumbass. stupid people shouldnt breed - when they do, we have to deal with idiots such as yourself. What a absurd and immature comment.
@Xyberfaust I masturbated on a scarecrow in Munsie, Indiana. Crows decended on it and lapped up all my yankee yolk and as I drove away I looked in the rear view mirror and could swear I saw that scarecrow smile with a bulge in it's straw-filled pants.
Wouldn't it be cool if John actually reads these comments??? Hey Mr.Mellencamp, if you ever read this email me!!! Like I said, I've always wanted to meet you.:) you're cool. And you sing like an angel, except about real life stuff not just fluffiness...... thanks again
tell me about it. She's just gorgeous! This is my favorite band from JCM. There's something about them...it's like a garage band playing in front of 15 thousands fans but with grace and style. The band brought that youthfulness that's missing from bands playing onstage today. The hair, the clothes, the stage movement all seems to fit that era.
I was so impressed with this music and this band that in the mid 80's I actually took some violin lessons, didn't do so well, I had two small children at trhe time and a part time job and not enough time to take the lessons serious. I'm thinking about giving it another shot, when I'm not watching grandbabies!!!!
What type of sound was JCM going for in this tune: a loose kind of delta-blues mixed with, perhaps, zydeco? I, for the life of me, place this kind of music anywhere. It's not bad, I just can't place it.
one of my favorite songs, i grew up listning to this band and i just rememberd a very small part of this song till tonight, i finally heard it on last.fm on my xbox and nearly broke down, it reminded me of my mom who i dont have with me anymore, i remember her always playing this song when we went somewhere, im very happy to have this song back in my life and in my heart
This song speaks to my soul, just like Stevie Nicks' "Landslide" or S&G's "Sound of Silence" or Natalie Merchant's "These Are Days". Music is very rare in it's ability to transcend us from space/time...and good music with a powerful message is a very magical formula! This is my favorite John Cougar tune...
Is it just me or did John Mellencamp add one more musician for his band with every album he released? I guess he had to stop or he would have gone broke paying all those people.
This was during his absolute best song writing period. The classic folk and country blended in perfectly with pop. Emotional delivered lyrics that speak directly to the soul and tells us he`s not perfect, and neither are we and it`s okay. It don`t get any better than that.
seen him twice in melbourne australia front row seats in 1998 got to shake his hand while he was on stage the best concert s i have ever been to never forget it
@ dirtearth - it started my love affair with classical instruments in rock music - by the way saw him in London oN a couple of years ago and you wouldn't know the difference, great show!
ok i think the little china man commercial is enough on these videos. why dont they advertize playboy or something educational like penthouse? lol just joking but man i hate them u tube commercials we are forced to watch just so we can check out the cougar. lol godbless.
I had a number of his albums, but after listening in succesion to his songs, they ALL sound alike... (Not "they have a Mellencamp feel", but literally alike, almost as if he just changed the lyrics and tempo, but kept the tune.)
@shmuli9 good comment! That's the problem when you keep singing your own songs! It won't take long before all your songs going to sound alike. So you look for other songwriters for new material.
@kazar77 Yes, the Rolling Stones seemed to have that problem for 20 or so years. Almost EVERYTHING they did after "Jumping Jack Flash" SOUNDED like "jumping Jack Flash", and that's probably why Barry Manilow and Lionel Richie aren't popular any more either...
After watching John on Letterman last night, I had to search out this video. I was in Market Square Arena the night this was filmed. Goes down in my history as the best concert I've ever attended. He played his full set then after filming the video he played for another 45 minutes, it was right before Chirstmas. John, you're still the best rocker out there!!
Great performance, great tune but listen to the lyrics. A rather a heavy critique of American society of the time and even more applicable now. Sorry John, they don't yet have a better understanding.
@stihlhead1 this lyrics in this song reminds me of Raymond Carver's short stories. I was reading a lot of them a few years and then rediscovered this song and it all clicked. This song also brings me back to being 7 years and watching my parents dance in the living room, beautiful memory.
never been a huge John Mellencamp fan but i love this song and this video. it shows everything great about being in a band and playing live. you can tell by the looks on their faces while they are playing that they know that they've nailed it, and the crowd is eating it all up.
all those people there look they were having such a great time, I wish I could of been there I would of been enjoying myself too. I'd be jamming just like that lady@4:20
At the end of 80's I found a tape at the side of the road while cycling. The tape was snapped and for this reason someone had chucked it out of a car window, but I fixed it with tape without knowing what was on it. The tape was full John's song, including this. One of my best finds ever.
@Tyrsca45 I thought it was Lisa because she recorded the album, Lonesome Jubilee. Either way it was the first time I heard a banjo, mandolin, fiddle and accordian all in one rock song and as strange as it was that day in August, 1987, it became typical for many more in the future for many other artists. Who would've thought John would innovate so much from one album. If you all like that song, listen to "We Are The People" and "Empty Hands" from the album as well.
nope it's Kenny...lol Kenny was with him till Mr. Happy go lucky...then Dane Clark took over..and is till with him. and Kenny, well if you don't know his story ....you need to Google Mr. Aronnoff/
lets not forget this song when john brought in the electric fiddle. and rocked the dome. he was huge at this time and had went back to john mellencamp because the record producers put cougar on his name and he always felt owned by that name and hated it. lol i dont blame him but it was a cool name i thought. especially when the radio announcer would say that john ccccc ooooo uuuu gggg aaaaa rrrrrr is coming to town in that deep voice on the katt radio station in okc ok. lol godbless.
@brookeyarber I saw his house - well, the gate and the long drive that wound around. And visited Belmont Mall Studios but couldn't get past the gate. I remember getting lost up there in Belmont, which seemed like the size of a small stretch of road, and almost stuck up on a muddy dirt road that wound around to a little white church. It's one of my favorite memories from the late 80's.
I'm not one who really hears words, I really just appreciate the feel.. the composition of songs and i'll say right here this song is up the with the very best! Much Respect!
@OlymPigs2010 a previous post said this was mimed over the original recording , after the concert they came back to shoot this for the video clip and asked the audience to stay
OMG, this takes me back to the those glory days of MTV. I had such a crush on Lisa Germano on the violin back then. John's music and videos defined that channel at that time.

one of the best songs ever written....no doubt....
and yes, it contained a critique...that was...all his own...and he has never lost this consistency in his music...
i think personally for me...what makes him not just good...but a great talent in our era...
not simple a good fun song and songwriter...but a brilliant ...voice that
can speak to both the human heart...
and the human condition at the same time and make it sound so damned easy...
he's truly an american original...

@tomcaat1 It's Lisa Germano. She is awesome. Check out her albums, if you like her.

@jtmichaelson I'd swear she has to have some gypsy blood in her to play like that.

@ambrandt420 Lter on his violinist was Miriam Sturm, not as good as Lisa but hot as well. So I think you and Mellencamp have the same preferences.

@jtmichaelson
I think thats Jane Clark actually
Tyrsca45 1 year ago
@Tyrsca45 I thought it was Lisa because she recorded the album, Lonesome Jubilee. Either way it was the first time I heard a banjo, mandolin, fiddle and accordian all in one rock song and as strange as it was that day in August, 1987, it became typical for many more in the future for many other artists. Who would've thought John would innovate so much from one album. If you all like that song, listen to "We Are The People" and "Empty Hands" from the album as well.

@Tyrsca45
nope it's Kenny...lol Kenny was with him till Mr.

@OlymPigs2010 a previous post said this was mimed over the original recording , after the concert they came back to shoot this for the video clip and asked the audience to stay
hunkydaboyz 1 year ago
And now he wants over $70 to hear him sing slowed down versions of his hits, and play for only an hour and 15 mins.
Sorry Mellencamp... maybe one day you'll wake up and be Cougar again!
At least Petty and Buffett still know how to put on a concert, and not a campfire sing-a-long!

OMG, this takes me back to the those glory days of MTV. I had such a crush on Lisa Germano on the violin back then. John's music and videos defined that channel at that time.
