I have all 6 or so Timbuk 3 CDs, ALL of it is great. Too bad only this song made it big. But I highly recommend you find and buy the bands CDs or mp3s Pat MacDonald the singer is a genious.

@Dontmakemecomeover5 partially it is true. it IS about a possible nuclear holocaust. It is also about a warning. Humanity can grow so intelligent that it becomes (sp) a slight bit stupid in its endeavours.
From their Website Timbuk3 is still performing. I've always loved this song. The harmonica on it is terrific and the lyrics are the perfect commentary on the 80s and 90s.
Haha I guess the song is about the 80's potentially ending due to nuclear stuff, but it's really up beat. Haha nice that they put it in movies like Tommy Boy. -Thought courtesy of cracked.com
This song's title is a rather clever enough double entendre. This song is also rather fun and upbeat, especially for one vocalizing about the perhaps reasonable potential of nuclear techs/arsenals/fallouts/consequences.
I threw them out of the restaurant I worked in( the mean Fiddler.London) when they sat reading newspapers with RayBan shades at a table they never reserved...The usual "don't you know who we are?"did not last long as I told them to get out....
They even called on the owner who backed me up.....And so they left....Not looking brightly into the future so I hear.LOL
When gay marriage was recently passed in NY, I emailed the band about their song "Legalize Our Love," because I couldn't find it anywhere online and I wanted to share it. And they created a video at my request! Search it out and please share widely! Thank you, Pat, you're awesome! ROCK ON, GAY NEW YORK!
Contrary to popular belief, this song's actually about a nuclear holocaust that the writer thought would occur at the end of the 1980s. The reason why the "future's so bright" is because of the detonation of nuclear weapons and the subsequent radiation that dominates the landscape in the post-apocalyptic atmosphere of the song.
@KantianEdifice no it wasnt it was a catchy tune and it was clever just like all 80's tunes pepole need to stop looking into things that arnt there.....
@TheDerpHero Even the writer of the song, Pat MacDonald, admitted that this song had a dark connotation to it. Why do you think he talks about a guy who studies nuclear science and has a "job" waiting after graduation? Just go to the wikipedia page for this song in addition to cracked.com's 9 Most Inappropriate Soundtracks and you'll see that this song is actually about a nuclear holocaust the writer feared would transpire in the 1980s.
@TheDerpHero If I'm a dumbass, then that must make you a retard bereft of any erudition and intelligence whatsoever. No, I take that back, even retards are smarter than you.

@MultiTates You're joking aren't you? Have you seen the state of the pound? £1 = 1 Euro. Unbelievable exchange rate. £1 = about $1.64 which is well down on a few years ago. I can remember a $1.86 exchange rate a couple of years ago. The Dollar is pretty stable. It's fallen a bit but every other currency has nosedived in comparison. Maybe we should all buy Chinese currency.
I failed Nuclear Science, I hate my classes, I walk down the halls grabbing cute girls asses. Things are going great but their only getting better Yeah Im doing alright, Getting good lays The futures so bright I gotta close the shades hahahaha This takes me wayyy back to Gr 7 in 1987
Dear Vevo, Let me start by saying that your filthy dick-rich corporation sucks youtube dry of democracy and fun. Ever since these big companies started paying off youtube so they could post their shit...etc, we have been getting flagged for infringement every time we include a song we like in our videos. This is YOUtube, the place where we can post OUR videos. To people who want greedy corporations expelled indefinitely from youtube - thumbs up and copy this into Vevo videos.
I remember them playing this on the Joan Rivers Show with a similar set and Joan asked "What;s the deal with the burro?" He said no idea it was the record company's idea...the video cheapened for me after that
Timbuk3, I always felt that was an interesting name for a band, and this tune has a most happening beat, brings out the latent dancing fool, the lyrics are pretty kooky too, " I'm Heavenly blessed and worldly wise I'm a peeping Tom techie with x-ray eyes" just a very original blast of tuneage! Thanks emimusic for the upload and of course, You Tube for both the space and leaving the lights on! Timbuk3 rocks!
When this husband/wife band broke through, I was very impressed they even did their stage shows with just the two of them. I still like their style and this song.
fun fact about this song ... they never sold out to an advertising company, although it's in the movie dream a little dream (though not on the soundtrack)
@LawrenceLugar1 Mine finally turned to dust about two years ago. Seems like that song was livelier 25 years ago. Can it be Grunge actually had an effect on me?? LOL
this guy actully lives in my small town still looks the sameway and plays shows every once in a while but man better to have a 1 hit wonder then none i guess
@musicbox193 LOL no it's 1986, it was my high school graduation song, I will never forget it. And unless anyone was alive and aware back then, it's very difficult to describe the constant threat and fear none of use could really ever shake or deny that, at any moment, the Reagan-era U.S. and U.S.S.R. could push a single red button & break out into nuclear war, wiping the entire human race off the face of the planet. That is what this song is based on, it was very real.
@xeokym No, no, no... All that stuff played into the song a little bit but it was based on what these two heard college kids talking about on 6th Street in Austin, TX. Everybody at UT calls 6th Street "The Drag" and that's where everybody goes to party. Timbuk3 were street musicians who played on The Drag and saw and heard everything that was going on at UT in the'80s. I'm from San Antonio and I've partied on The Drag with my UT friends many times in the early 80s.
@xeokym Im 42, The cold war in the 80s was something to fear. My older brother started his first patrol on the SSBN-658 in 1982. But I believe we have way more to fear today from two bit dictators wanting a bomb. The rules of MAD no longer apply today. It used to be if you fuck with America we will vaporize your country. Since 1988 we have had no leaders with a spine or a pair. Reagan put the fear of God into the world. Along with American pride.
@22reTOYOTA this song obviously meant a lot of different things to different people. I wasn't trying to suggest it was specifically about the tension of the possibility of WW3. It was about nuclear reactors like 3 Mile Island, it was about what was cool in the mid-80s, it was a sarcastic comment that "my future's so bright" (meaning, atomically bright, as in, NO FUTURE), it was an attitude. Everyone interprets songs differently & they will always have multiple meanings. No one is right or wrong.
@xeokym We had alot of "No Nukes" songs along with "Dont drop the Bomb" songs. The fact is MAD stopped any country with a brain from impending doom if they launched, made the arms build up work. Its not USA vs USSR anymore. Its a single warhead launched from Iran into Israel. Trust me Israel does not fuck around. They have well over 60 Jericho 3 ICBMs waiting in response. Maybe you should investigate France. They are a pinko nation with 80% of their power from 235 reactors.
@22reTOYOTA dude I'm not arguing with you, why do you keep babbling on like I don't know what I'm talking about? You keep telling me stuff that I know already, assuming I'm ignorant. I'm the same age as you, I graduated HS in 1986. I'm well aware of France testing their nukes out in the ocean trying to hide the explosions underwater, and China getting purified uranium from compromised ex-USSR reactors. I was in Manhattan, a block away from the Twin Towers when the planes hit. So kindly fuck off.
@duffweld I live 45 minutes away from a nuclear power plant, and if it ever blew up, I'd probably die a radiation. (Along with the rest of the Lake Huron coast)
They were good, I remember one of their songs with the words "both hands on the steering wheel of life" saw them on Austin City limits and I liked them. They pioneered backtracking etc.
I had a blind date Friday night, was so worried it would be lame or he would be a total loser but he was anything but! Good looking and has a great job! Gracias mi amigo!

Isn't this song older though?
Isn't it from the 70s?
musicbox193 1 year ago
@musicbox193 1986, and it's supposedly not a positive song either, but a song about future holocausts.
thefoppa1000 1 year ago

@daytenmillion ????????????
maybe you partied a little too hard, I really can't understand a word of your post. o__o;;

No one is right or wrong.
xeokym 1 year ago

They were good, I remember one of their songs with the words "both hands on the steering wheel of life" saw them on Austin City limits and I liked them. They pioneered backtracking etc.
