There were those who even critizized our kiruv! I wasn't let into a yeshiva in lakewood 1980, before any the Rebbe started being praised by Jews as Mashiach. Why? because it wasn't "proper" to go out and seek Jews to do a Mitzvah. Look at those same people now, The othodox union, Aish, even the most Haredi places, all geared towards kiruv.
