ok... lets get this straight.... Mastodon sounds like Baroness... you could tell when you hear Crack The Skye... thats when they semmed to focus on the Prog... Boing!
I don't think Baroness was lacking in video production, I think all you new schoolers just don't dig music videos that aren't made by a huge team of Big Media designers and computer/Photoshop geeks. Watch some Sleep videos
Blue record and crack the slur both fuckin owned in their own respects. They were released pretty close to each other and I could never decide which I liked best because they were both masterpieces.
@Jpope0148 lol "crack the slur" I was wondering what you were trying to say, then I looked at my keyboard and realized the last three letter are next to the ones you meant to type on the keyboard.
I can see the Mastodon resemblance only really in the odd guitar work. This is my time ever checking Baroness out, but I dig it a lot. Not because of Mastodon, but because I think they sound pretty damn good.
Sorry to Baroness but this video kinda ruined the song for me. I don't know what they were trying to achieve. Maybe Baizley's mind is just too much for me to comprehend.
Saying Baroness is a Mastodon rip off is the same thing as saying any thrash metal band is a Kill Em All rip off... Grow a fucking brain and learn to accept that same genre doesn't mean rip off.I don't even understand how can people compare the two bands. It's like comparing two completely different colors.

Don't get me wrong, but I still don't see why they call these guys sludge metal. There's nothing heavy, dirty, or hateful about their music (as far as I've heard) and those are all pretty important elements to sludge. They don't sound fucked-up enough, or at all, really.
@NightmareGanon Sludge has to be hateful? Since when? And Baroness is plenty heavy. Kylesa isn't hateful, but they're Sludge. Weedeater isn't hateful, and they're Sludge/Doom. I fail to see your representation of what should and shouldn't be Sludge.
@Cessate I haven't heard any other other song from this guys, but at least this song is by no means sludge. Sludge is hateful... since the classic era of the genre: Grief, Eyehategod, Buzzoven, Crowbar, Iron Monkey, Corrupted, Fleshpress: all undeniably hateful, sounding dirty as fuck.
@NightmareGanon You have to understand/keep in mind that genres DO progress. And where Iron Monkey, Grief, and Buzz are only bands I like from that list, and where they ARE Sludge. All of them are easily identified with heavy Doom elements as well.
There's PLENTY of "Modern" Sludge bands out there that still have Doom elements (Black Tusk, Jucifer, Cough), and others who still dig Sludge but chose not to have Doom. Like Kylesa, and Baroness. I find they have Post-Rock influence with Sludge.
@Cessate I don't think sludge can be sludge without doom metal influence. A sludge band can change their sound... but there's a point where it stops being sludge. I haven't listened to much more by them, but I would classify this song as just prog metal, as there's very little doom or hardcore element in there.
Also, what's up with not liking Eyehategod? I know everyone has different tastes, but they're just... so accessible.
@NightmareGanon I don't think Sludge needs Doom influence at all to survive. They're separate genres that just so happen to work well together IMO.
As far as Prog goes? I don't see it. I think of Porcupine Tree, Opeth, BTBAM, Rush and others as Prog. Baroness don't fall into anything like that haha.
And meh. Eyehategod is good, but nothing I'd buy or go see live if they were headlining. I'm big into Sludge, but EHG and Highonfire are two bands I just can't get into.

@NightmareGanon I'd say typical stoner rock would be more so what Sludge is; if you were to take out the other genres that generally make it (ie: Doom or Post-Rock). Kyuss, Unida, Truckfighters, and so forth. All have very strong similarities to Sludge, but clearly what makes Sludge... Sludge is the mix of other genres. And I don't think it solely has to be Doom, obviously if I still count Mastodon, Kylesa and Baroness Sludge.
Brilliant band. Really refreshing. I love how a lot of their songs are in major key's too. And as for the Mastodon comparisons. Yeah they sound slightly similiar. And that's all that really needs to be said on the matter.
@ToxicMayo09 Money. Or a lack thereof. That's why videos like these seem so cheap and generic. If more people would, metaphorically speaking, unhook themselves from the soulless, atonal, mainstream, AutoTune matrix of Bieber and GaGa-wdawful, and listen to decent music, bands like this would have bigger budgets for music videos.
@Greysockmadman Relapse has a pretty good budget man, I don't think it's lack of money lol.. I think they honestly did this because they wanted to create a 60's - 70's esque psychedelia video. Personally, it doesn't matter to me I love the music. Bands like Baroness are too far and few between.
I honestly don't see the huge Mastodon resemblance everyone's pointing out. I mean I see some similarities both both bands feel completely separate to me.
@BustedZen that's because that "everyone" only knows Mastodon when it comes to "sludgy" genres, since Mastodon has grown pretty mainstream. It's within the boundaries of the same musical genre/attitude/approach (even geography), it would be weird if they did not resembled each other.

@Metal09Master Fine, its not gay so much as its just terrible. The effects look cheaply made and the concept is corny, That stupid eclipse shit and the cheap looking environments just make the video terrible. Even if they were going for that intentionally tacky look, it still sucks.
@ToxicMayo9 i'd say if it really bothers you, try drugs, they make just about everything better, except funerals...i wouldn't recommend that...doesn't end well
@ToxicMayo9 This song is so full of awesome that the video could be Richard Simmons covered in peanut oil doing the Macerena and I would still watch it.
i think baroness and mastodon are both fucking badass. mastodon has more of a ...well... refined musical prog metal take to it. Baroness is still fucking great, but they have more of a straight up rock n' roll groove to them and more of a garage band feel i think. Both fuckin' blow my god damn mind and make me wish i had some fuckin' acid or something to drop. I love them both. \m/
Meaning of video - A man tries to escape the prison of his depression and fear where many have fallen. Then he fights his demons and himself endlessly until he realizes the way out: regaining his pride.
Blue(and pretty much all of Baroness's albums) is most deffinitly a concept album. In my opinion you can't just listen to one song by them because it's just soooo much better to chill out and listen to the album in it's entirety. To listen to just one of the songs by itself just can't compare to the full experience.
This band is interesting, but this song is such a tease, to me. Its like building up tension the whole time with no climax. ugh. I like it but im just waiting for that burst
DEPTHS OF HATRED, TECHNICAL DEATH METAL/DEATHCORE FROM MONTREAL, CHECK OUT THIS CHANNEL! FOR FANS OF THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, ALL SHALL PERISH, BENEATH THE MASSACRE!
@dreadface101 You'd be wrong, then. Baroness have a far better grasp of melody and tonal relationships, which is more indicative of musical inclination. Mastodon aren't horrible at it, there are far worse, but Baroness are just really good with notes. Techical difficulty does not equal musical prowess. That said, Baroness certainly owe a lot of their musical stylings to Mastodon, and I'm sure they'd admit that.
@dreadface101 I think the biggest difference to me are the drums. While both intense the drums in baroness seem far more "war oriented" and in mastodon while they are great they don't meld as well with the guitar. Plus, the vocal harmony is DYNAMICALLY different.
How is baroness like Mastodon? Baroness's vocal quality is more consistant than Mastodon (From Leviathan to Crack the Skye, Mastodon sounds completely different vocally while from Blue Album to Red Album Baroness vocals don't change.) Baroness has more poppish guitars while Mastodon has more Heavy Metal-esque Guitars

This is a great song. I've had always had trouble with Baronesses singing style, it just annoyed me. It was such a shame because I would have liked a lot more of their music otherwise. But this song, it works for me.
Just because they're influenced by Mastodon doesn't mean that they're ripping them off. I mean, I can hear the Mastodon in there, but it's still Baroness' ideas and Baroness' music. It's like saying that Slayer ripped off Metallica.
I don't understand all the comparisons between Mastodon and Baroness. Other than the fact that they're both sludge/progressive metal bands I don't hear any resemblance.
Stylistically the two are worlds apart, you may as well say any two thrash bands sound the same because they can be put in the same genre, etc. (Nothing against thrash, I personally love it, just picked it as an example)
I like sound dont think guitars on this song sound like mastodon as much (except the solo parts) but vocals sound like a cross of troy sanders from maston and J.D. cronise from the sword.
Never heard them before but their name made me think it was going to be some goofy prog metal band from Norway with a female vocalist. Pretty good stuff.
does sound like mastodon. big deal. like no one's style has ever been influential before? also sounds like some janes' addiction vocal stylings in the melodies
I saw this band open for Mastodon last year and they were good. they rock live and being on the same label Isee whythey opened besides sounding influenced by Mastodon and The Sword which i give second place after The Fucking AWSOME MASTODON then this here baroness for bronze. My band will sound in this direction!
great song for baroness

Meaning of video - A man tries to escape the prison of his depression and fear where many have fallen. Then he fights his demons and himself endlessly until he realizes the way out: regaining his pride.

Its a great band but the vocals just dont live up to the music like they do in mastodon

The beginning reminds me of a Kenneth Anger film.

Personally i find mastodon more musically inclined, as far time signatures and difficulty goes.
But i still really enjoy this band ! =)

That said, Baroness certainly owe a lot of their musical stylings to Mastodon, and I'm sure they'd admit that.
alphaenemy 10 months ago
@dreadface101 I think the biggest difference to me are the drums. While both intense the drums in baroness seem far more "war oriented" and in mastodon while they are great they don't meld as well with the guitar. Plus, the vocal harmony is DYNAMICALLY different.

@dreadface101 is music a display of skill or just a pleasurable catharsis?

@dreadface101 Baroness speaks to me more. talent is useless unless it connects.

Stop comparing. Please. You're ruining the buzz.
This is the first time I've ever heard Baroness, and they're awesome.
I've been listening to Mastodon for a year now, and Baroness is a different entity altogether in my mind.
It's all epic.

This song is a one way ticket inwards to the glowy crystal cave of the self.

These mastodon comparison comments are ridiculous. People need to get up on their sludge, baroness is quite unique, even when compared to mastodon.

Everybody who reads this. Purchase Blue Record. I promise you you wont regret it.

JikutoJudgment 11 months ago
I don't understand all the comparisons between Mastodon and Baroness. Other than the fact that they're both sludge/progressive metal bands I don't hear any resemblance.
Stylistically the two are worlds apart, you may as well say any two thrash bands sound the same because they can be put in the same genre, etc. (Nothing against thrash, I personally love it, just picked it as an example)
mrmist232 11 months ago
wenn das intro mal nicht von beatsteaks geklaut wurde, also nicht baroness von beatsteaks sondern die steaks haben von den baronen gemopst....
nascma 11 months ago
why the comparisson? Baroness is much more technical and progressive. Mastodon is more like stoner metal.
fievelcafe 11 months ago
@fievelcafe actually this sounds like a mix of mastodon and SOAD to me. Just kinda dumbed down and not as good. Still pretty good though i guess.

Pretty good stuff.
gothos1000 1 year ago
does sound like mastodon. big deal. like no one's style has ever been influential before? also sounds like some janes' addiction vocal stylings in the melodies
