@Missnoopuka yes and no... hard shell nuts aren't really any harder than rawhide bones or some other chew toys they get... and dogs, as well as other animals, need hard things to chew on once in a while or else the teeth will get weak... eh, if the dog didn't like it, or if it hurt too much, he'd stop.
@Kamikitsune0 My dog is 16 year old dog and his teeth are still in good condition. We have never fed him with hard shell nuts or bones or toys .Dogs can digest some bones, but not hard shell nuts ,they are two different things.Nuts also have high phosporus content that can lead to bladder stone.
@Missnoopuka I am a res. vet. and I can tell you that 1) dogs teeth last longer (majority of the time) when/if they have something hard to chew on. I'm aware of the high phosphorus content as well as most nuts have proteins that can be hard on most dogs stomachs, causing diarrhea or upset stomach. 2) While chewing on the shell of the nut will not hurt this dog in the least, eating the nut COULD do potential damage if eaten in high amounts...but just one or two will, most likely, not hurt him.
@Kamikitsune0 So are you saying you feed him with what you know not good for him anyway ? My dog rarely eats grass from our lawn ,so no chemical .I will never feed my dog knowing there is only tiny bit of fungus or mold -they go directly to trash .
@Missnoopuka No, I would not knowingly feed something not good to my dog...but they DO get into things...But I'm just going to throw this out there for you to gnaw on... dogs can and have lived without human domestication...they ate raw meat, random plants/grass, nuts, and god knows what else.. I'm sure a walnut or two every now and then would not hurt them in the least. If this owner EVER saw anything wrong with the dog after these activities..I"m sure they'd stop doing it.
@Kamikitsune0 And I'm throwing this for you to gnaw on too-Those dogs without domestication are shortlived from many reasons and one of them is from diseases and food that they live on.Without proper food and vaccines ,our dogs will be shortlived too.Although I am not a vet ,I have talked to more than 20 vets- not all of them are good and I never listen to only one vet but a majority or whose suggestions are reliable. When you are a vet you should only give good informations away.Or anyone can
@Missnoopuka "should only give good informations" really? that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. People don't intentionally give 'bad' information and who decides it's 'bad' or 'good' information? @Stormin024 now, are these wild walnuts you're talking about? or store-bought ones... cuz I'm fairly certain a store would not sell fungus/moldy food to people (unless it was a fungus or mold...) and he got into that nut pretty fast, so he's obviously done it before with no problem. It's like saying dogs shouldn't get table scraps...but they do. It's one of those 'rules' that 'shouldn't' be broken but is anyway because we don't see the harm.
@Stormin024 I'm a res. vet. I do not need to do the research, lol. It's been done already. Eating one or two of the nuts will, most likely, not hurt the dog. Chewing on the shell of one or two will not hurt him either (even if there was a fungus or mold). Dogs eat grass, which contains chemicals worse than a small bit of fungus or mold that could be found on a shell of a walnut. And again, you are correct, if he fed the dogs walnuts multiple times daily, there could be trouble.
aww, he is so handsome. I hope my lady husky (11months) grows big and strong :D our other husky that we rescued, is small. she is 4 years old, but we've only had her for 6 months now.
Erhum. Their teeth are made out of bones and their jaw is very powerful. I'm Sure A Walnut couldn't break one tooth. Trust, I Maybe young but I do know what you shouldn't give and why. This causes no damage Trust.
not necessarily. my cousin's a vet, and he said that hard things are good for them to chew on, cuz it gets rid of the plaque and tartar buildup on their teeth. wy else would they sell bones and stuff like that in a pet store if it was harmful?
Most people get them because of their eyes, and when they're pups, but abands them when they grow up, because they are too much too handle. They need alot of walking, everyday and loads of space for movement. And you must train it, and most likely nuder it, espescially if it's a male, because they are so large, and can hurt a child , if not controlled.
O.O holy cow! That's one smart husky! He didn't just eat the whole thing he actually just ate the nut and not the shell! (Did a better job then I do breaking that shell too) He's gorgeous by the way.
I thought my dog was the only one that did this! He eats sunflower seeds and I nearly died laughing when I noticed he was cracking the shells to get to the seeds.
Cute dog ^^ Love huskies. Have raised them for several years. I hate how many people underestimate them though. They aren't your normal dog that's for sure, and they definitely don't eat just anything. My sibe won't TOUCH vegetables and spits them out if he finds them mixed in a stew or something. Also picks out which pieces of his dog food he likes best and puts them on the floor to eat em (red first then brown, yellow and green) Nice video ^^ He's cute.
I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but walnuts can cause seizures and bladder stones in dogs. So even though it is impressive that your dog can crack open a walnut, you should lay off of it. You could be doing some serious harm.
i have a video of my dog eating a grape....anyone want to come bash me? my point is some things may be harmful to dogs in general but not to every dog, like some humans are allergic to peanuts, but not every human.
great video. i wish i had one of pandora cracking open a pecan and eating it!
Why would you even feed him one? Is there a point to it? hey how would you like to find out your parents fed you poison, but not enough to kill you. Its stupid and irresponsible.
And depending on the size of your dog, a small dog 10 pounds or under can die in eating just 5-10 grapes
if you weren't so lazy you would go to my videos and see what kind of dog i have. and note that i put notes in there to show what i did not know at the time. so now you can take your foot out of your mouth. i am not an irresponsible pet owner.
I really dont care what kind of dog you have, and you may not have been knowledgeable about grapes being bad for dogs at the time, but coming on here and telling everyone "hey my dog had a grape and was fine so shut up", like your proud of it or something, that is irresponsible and immature.
i never told anyone to shut up, but you took my invitation to come bash me. so predictable. people on the internet are retarded and you just proved my point.
sounds like you are talking about yourself there buddy, saying things that are not true. you CANNOT become a VET in 6 years. VET TECH...maybe, but that does not make you a Vet. Vets are doctors!
Yes I do know what I am talking about, I am sitting here researching it. Depending on your school schedule it can take you anywhere from 2 to 4 years to become a vet tech, sorry I wasn't specific enough for you. I am done wasting my time arguing with someone on the freaking internet. I actually have a life and things to do unlike yourself, obviously.
Oh because while researching you found out a Vet is six years and you realized your an idiot? You said vet tech was 6 years... I said its 2 or 3, I dont see how you think you were right? But hey if thats your only ego boost for the day, ill let you take it...
And obviously because I dont have a job, wife or friends because I know something about dogs right? Pathetic. All I can say.
now that i go back through and read the comments, i realize that you are one of those people who lives for drama and has to be right about everything. i feel for you, it takes a lot of energy to come on the internet and try to prove everyone wrong. you must have a hard time sleeping at night.
I dont really care about drama, I dont really care about being right, but when I AM right, I WILL take a stand and argue my point. I not a pushover, sorry. Neither here nor in my everyday life.
I don't see your logic in thinking that some idiots shouldn't be able to own a dog. Why not prohibit all idiots from owning a dog instead of some? Perhaps you can explain.
Rachael2k9, you obviously know nothing of dogs. "Speech" is a trick like any other, based on their pre-existing propensity for vociferation.
Implying that the trainer/owner punishes the dog for failure to speak properly is quite a horrendous insult- you should be ashamed of yourself.
Siberian Huskies actually have aggression and competitiveness bred into them, for sled-pulling in freezing cold. Also a strong sense of family and "pack." Rocky obviously loves his family.
I don't teach Rocky to say things, neither do I punish him for failing to speak. Sometimes I'll repeat the name of something and out of nowhere he'll be growling what I'm trying to say. Not because I make him or even want him to, but he just does.
you best give him the walnut out of its shell others wise ur dog mite eat a piece of the shell and choke...thats wot happend to my friends dog but it survived.
well done to the dog any way ;) im just tryin to give advice so please do not put anything horrible back as my mum tells me off so we are both doing us a favour ;)
I've seen my dogs selectively choose their food almost every day. Trying to give them worming tablets as puppies, we hid the tablets in bits of meat (actually placed inside) and the dogs took the meat, ate it and spat out the pills.
Understand, some adult humans have died from choking on food, so your claim that intelligence is a factor here is flawed.
Fact is a dog that isn't ravenous with hunger will chew it's food and spit out anything inedible. It isn't a matter of smarts, it's instinct.
I mentioned humans, "No it doesn't, they have the intelligence of a 3 year old. They dont think like humans and even humans choke."
It is most definitely not an instinct, as a vet, I get many cases where dogs have eaten something inedible(so you saying they spit out anything inedible is flawed), they like to chew up cords, they chew up tables, some will chew on anything.
People like you, like to think that dogs are super smart, they aren't, again, they have the intelligence of a 3 year old.
They most definitely do not think like adult humans, and wouldnt even consider deciding which part to eat and which part to not eat, they eat what they think tastes good, and ive had some pills, even vitamins, that tasted disgusting.
Fact is, a dog could EASILY die from eating a walnut, most dogs do NOT eat slowly, they eat as fast as they can, unless you free feed, every dog I have ever seen with a feeding schedule eats "ravenously" as you like to say. They do not sit there.... cont.
and think about what could happen to them, they dont think "Oh I should be careful, I might choke". That is the smarts I was talking about, and generally a 3 year old does not think about the consequences
As a licenced breeder of twenty-nine years and a senior kennel club member I can tell you you're in serious error and show a considerable misunderstanding of dog behaviour. You also seem to confuse chewing and swallowing quite conveniently.
Dogs only speed feed when there is percieved competition and/or threat. I have bred hundreds of dogs over the past three decades and never had a choking incident in all that time.
Just because your a "licensed" breeder(which usually means puppy mill) does not mean you know anything about dog behavior, many dogs "speed feed", with no threat around, actually most dogs wont eat if there is a threat around, or when under stress(which is what happens when they think a threat is near).
Give some valid reasoning and then you'll have an argument.
And most dogs will swallow anything they chew, the whole point of chewing is to make it small enough to go down the esophagus. They are also not born knowing they can choke, neither are humans.
And as a veterinarian, choking and swallowing inedible objects is VERY common.
I note your baiting attempt with disgust. Far from a puppy mill, I am a respected kennel club member. It may be different in your country, but it is next to impossible to maintain a breeder's licence in my country unless you strictly control the bloodline of your animals.
Your simple insults aside - I will put my three decades of dog rearing and care (longer than you have been alive) against your green opinion any day...
... Once you have spent a bit more time around animals you might notice that aswell as braking down food to swallow, dogs also use chewing to sift through food for inedible materials - which they spit out. For evidence - simply watch this video again and pay attention to the active selection taking place. Rocky cracks open the shell, spits it out, and carefully takes the soft nut out, leaving the shell. I have noted this behaviour in all my dogs - including it being taught by mothers to pups.
I begin to doubt your credentials as you continually equate human and canine intelligence to each other as if they are on a single axis sliding scale. Something any veterinarian worth their salt would never do.
Any kind of intelligence can be compared, studies have shown that dogs have the learning capacity of a 3-4 year old child. Humans compare their intelligence to dolphins, camels, elephants. Essentially, intelligence IS learning capacity.
And how would you know a good veterinarian would never compare intelligence? Thats just ignorant to say. It is a known fact, there are even TV programs and such about the intelligence of dogs. Do some research if you want.
Dogs eat rubber, plastic, socks, clothes, and anything and everything in between, which they also SWALLOW. Stomach pumping is probably the the most common thing we do besides regular checkups.
I have studied animals/dogs for many years(you have to, to become a veterinarian) and I also went to ABC(animal behavior college).
You really do not need to know much to be a dog breeder, just to watch the lines for health risks, and breed only the best stock(which is found through dog shows)
So do not act like an animal behaviorist because you have bred and owned dogs, by your logic most families in the country would be considered animal behaviorists.
As my day to day work is dealing with these animals - and has been for the last three decades, I can say that that does equate to considerably more experience than you would have on an Animal behaviour course which (unless you specialise in canines) must cover a multitude of animals in a small amount of time (you are 25 according to your profile and standard Veterinary training is four years, so you have a maximum of four years experience as a full practicing vet - less I should imagine.
MY day to day work is also dealing with these animals, but of course they are sick, and have problems, which would be MUCH more experience than feeding/showing(and as I said, it really does not take much to run a kennel, my parents used to breeder Shiba's, and were quite successful), stop trying to show me up because you have a kennel, your making yourself sound very immature, every comment you post you brag about it, it does not impress me, ...
...and I do not think you have any more dog behavioral skills because of it
But of course, in your next post your going to say "I've been breeding dogs since before you were born"
You also made it sound like you have no problems, as you said you have not even had one choking incident, so that means you dont have any more experience than with family pets.
I'm sorry, but the fact is that dogs do not "sift through" food or whatever they are chewing for inedible objects, maybe hard objects like rocks, but not inedible objects, like rubber, plastic, etc.
That is a fact and I deal with it almost daily, you can argue and argue all you want, but you have a limited number of dogs to get your information from, and in my 3 1/2 years of being a vet, I bet I have dealt with more dogs than you.
Just do a little research, please, your not making yourself sound too bright, I know, I know, you want to believe dogs think like humans, im sorry, but they dont. Just get over that and stop thinking dogs are geniuses, please.

happyroad234 2 years ago
@happyroad234
Erhum. Their teeth are made out of bones and their jaw is very powerful. I'm Sure A Walnut couldn't break one tooth. Trust, I Maybe young but I do know what you shouldn't give and why. This causes no damage Trust.
ChantelloTheWolfFan 2 years ago
not necessarily. my cousin's a vet, and he said that hard things are good for them to chew on, cuz it gets rid of the plaque and tartar buildup on their teeth. wy else would they sell bones and stuff like that in a pet store if it was harmful?

DgosFinnest 2 years ago
Most people get them because of their eyes, and when they're pups, but abands them when they grow up, because they are too much too handle. They need alot of walking, everyday and loads of space for movement. And you must train it, and most likely nuder it, espescially if it's a male, because they are so large, and can hurt a child , if not controlled.

Insiss 2 years ago
I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but walnuts can cause seizures and bladder stones in dogs. So even though it is impressive that your dog can crack open a walnut, you should lay off of it. You could be doing some serious harm.

i have a video of my dog eating a grape....anyone want to come bash me? my point is some things may be harmful to dogs in general but not to every dog, like some humans are allergic to peanuts, but not every human.
great video. i wish i had one of pandora cracking open a pecan and eating it!
milesamanda3 3 years ago
Grapes ARE bad for EVERY dog, it is not an allergy thing, it can cause anemia and kidney failure. Your dog can die.
Eating a walnut is bad for every dog also, it can easily choke.
boss122334 3 years ago
no shit. i know that grapes are bad for dogs, but he ate it and hes fine. one grape didn't kill him.
milesamanda3 3 years ago
Why would you even feed him one? Is there a point to it? hey how would you like to find out your parents fed you poison, but not enough to kill you. Its stupid and irresponsible.
And depending on the size of your dog, a small dog 10 pounds or under can die in eating just 5-10 grapes
boss122334 3 years ago
if you weren't so lazy you would go to my videos and see what kind of dog i have. and note that i put notes in there to show what i did not know at the time. so now you can take your foot out of your mouth. i am not an irresponsible pet owner.
milesamanda3 3 years ago
I really dont care what kind of dog you have, and you may not have been knowledgeable about grapes being bad for dogs at the time, but coming on here and telling everyone "hey my dog had a grape and was fine so shut up", like your proud of it or something, that is irresponsible and immature.
boss122334 3 years ago
i never told anyone to shut up, but you took my invitation to come bash me. so predictable. people on the internet are retarded and you just proved my point.
milesamanda3 3 years ago
Well I obviously didnt directly copy your comment, but that was the gist of it.

boss122334 3 years ago

milesamanda3 3 years ago
I seriously doubt that, but hey thats why you love the internet so much, because you say anything you want, true or not, right?
boss122334 3 years ago
sounds like you are talking about yourself there buddy, saying things that are not true. you CANNOT become a VET in 6 years. VET TECH...maybe, but that does not make you a Vet. Vets are doctors!
milesamanda3 3 years ago
No, Vet tech is like 2 or 3 years... VETERINARIAN is SIX years, im sorry but you DONT know what your talking about
Oh and nice comeback. Didnt make you sound 13 years old at all.
boss122334 3 years ago
Yes I do know what I am talking about, I am sitting here researching it. Depending on your school schedule it can take you anywhere from 2 to 4 years to become a vet tech, sorry I wasn't specific enough for you. I am done wasting my time arguing with someone on the freaking internet. I actually have a life and things to do unlike yourself, obviously.
milesamanda3 3 years ago
Oh because while researching you found out a Vet is six years and you realized your an idiot? You said vet tech was 6 years... I said its 2 or 3, I dont see how you think you were right? But hey if thats your only ego boost for the day, ill let you take it...
And obviously because I dont have a job, wife or friends because I know something about dogs right? Pathetic. All I can say.

milesamanda3 3 years ago
I dont really care about drama, I dont really care about being right, but when I AM right, I WILL take a stand and argue my point. I not a pushover, sorry. Neither here nor in my everyday life.

vikings1111111 3 years ago

Rachael2k9, you obviously know nothing of dogs. "Speech" is a trick like any other, based on their pre-existing propensity for vociferation.
Implying that the trainer/owner punishes the dog for failure to speak properly is quite a horrendous insult- you should be ashamed of yourself.
Siberian Huskies actually have aggression and competitiveness bred into them, for sled-pulling in freezing cold. Also a strong sense of family and "pack." Rocky obviously loves his family.
...so shut up

ZeroDragonwolf 3 years ago
I don't teach Rocky to say things, neither do I punish him for failing to speak. Sometimes I'll repeat the name of something and out of nowhere he'll be growling what I'm trying to say. Not because I make him or even want him to, but he just does.
And Rocky's aggression is at rock bottom.

Maddhater1 3 years ago
But the shell CAN hurt them if they swallow a big enough piece as they can with anything
That's just common sense to know that
WasOriginal 3 years ago
But the dog knows enough not to bite off more than it can chew.
AnonEyeMouse 3 years ago
No it doesn't, they have the intelligence of a 3 year old. They dont think like humans and even humans choke.
That is just ignorant to say
boss122334 3 years ago
Dogs can and have choked and DIED eating nuts, and even bones(usually cooked bones).
I once had to give my dog the Heimlich maneuver because she was choking on a pig ear. Havent given her a pig ear since.
boss122334 3 years ago
I've seen my dogs selectively choose their food almost every day. Trying to give them worming tablets as puppies, we hid the tablets in bits of meat (actually placed inside) and the dogs took the meat, ate it and spat out the pills.
Understand, some adult humans have died from choking on food, so your claim that intelligence is a factor here is flawed.
Fact is a dog that isn't ravenous with hunger will chew it's food and spit out anything inedible. It isn't a matter of smarts, it's instinct.
AnonEyeMouse 3 years ago
I mentioned humans, "No it doesn't, they have the intelligence of a 3 year old. They dont think like humans and even humans choke."
It is most definitely not an instinct, as a vet, I get many cases where dogs have eaten something inedible(so you saying they spit out anything inedible is flawed), they like to chew up cords, they chew up tables, some will chew on anything.
People like you, like to think that dogs are super smart, they aren't, again, they have the intelligence of a 3 year old.
boss122334 3 years ago
They most definitely do not think like adult humans, and wouldnt even consider deciding which part to eat and which part to not eat, they eat what they think tastes good, and ive had some pills, even vitamins, that tasted disgusting.
Fact is, a dog could EASILY die from eating a walnut, most dogs do NOT eat slowly, they eat as fast as they can, unless you free feed, every dog I have ever seen with a feeding schedule eats "ravenously" as you like to say. They do not sit there.... cont.
boss122334 3 years ago
cont.
and think about what could happen to them, they dont think "Oh I should be careful, I might choke". That is the smarts I was talking about, and generally a 3 year old does not think about the consequences
boss122334 3 years ago
As a licenced breeder of twenty-nine years and a senior kennel club member I can tell you you're in serious error and show a considerable misunderstanding of dog behaviour. You also seem to confuse chewing and swallowing quite conveniently.
Dogs only speed feed when there is percieved competition and/or threat. I have bred hundreds of dogs over the past three decades and never had a choking incident in all that time.
AnonEyeMouse 3 years ago
Just because your a "licensed" breeder(which usually means puppy mill) does not mean you know anything about dog behavior, many dogs "speed feed", with no threat around, actually most dogs wont eat if there is a threat around, or when under stress(which is what happens when they think a threat is near).
Give some valid reasoning and then you'll have an argument.
boss122334 3 years ago
And most dogs will swallow anything they chew, the whole point of chewing is to make it small enough to go down the esophagus. They are also not born knowing they can choke, neither are humans.
And as a veterinarian, choking and swallowing inedible objects is VERY common.
boss122334 3 years ago
I note your baiting attempt with disgust. Far from a puppy mill, I am a respected kennel club member. It may be different in your country, but it is next to impossible to maintain a breeder's licence in my country unless you strictly control the bloodline of your animals.
Your simple insults aside - I will put my three decades of dog rearing and care (longer than you have been alive) against your green opinion any day...
AnonEyeMouse 3 years ago
AnonEyeMouse 3 years ago
Well that just proves untrue as dogs eat inedible materials EVERYDAY. How many times do I have to say this to you? Dogs are not geniuses.
boss122334 3 years ago
I begin to doubt your credentials as you continually equate human and canine intelligence to each other as if they are on a single axis sliding scale. Something any veterinarian worth their salt would never do.
I notice you ignore the evidence presented.
AnonEyeMouse 3 years ago
Any kind of intelligence can be compared, studies have shown that dogs have the learning capacity of a 3-4 year old child. Humans compare their intelligence to dolphins, camels, elephants. Essentially, intelligence IS learning capacity.
And how would you know a good veterinarian would never compare intelligence? Thats just ignorant to say. It is a known fact, there are even TV programs and such about the intelligence of dogs. Do some research if you want.
boss122334 3 years ago
Dogs eat rubber, plastic, socks, clothes, and anything and everything in between, which they also SWALLOW. Stomach pumping is probably the the most common thing we do besides regular checkups.
I have studied animals/dogs for many years(you have to, to become a veterinarian) and I also went to ABC(animal behavior college).
You really do not need to know much to be a dog breeder, just to watch the lines for health risks, and breed only the best stock(which is found through dog shows)
boss122334 3 years ago
So do not act like an animal behaviorist because you have bred and owned dogs, by your logic most families in the country would be considered animal behaviorists.
boss122334 3 years ago
As my day to day work is dealing with these animals - and has been for the last three decades, I can say that that does equate to considerably more experience than you would have on an Animal behaviour course which (unless you specialise in canines) must cover a multitude of animals in a small amount of time (you are 25 according to your profile and standard Veterinary training is four years, so you have a maximum of four years experience as a full practicing vet - less I should imagine.
AnonEyeMouse 3 years ago
MY day to day work is also dealing with these animals, but of course they are sick, and have problems, which would be MUCH more experience than feeding/showing(and as I said, it really does not take much to run a kennel, my parents used to breeder Shiba's, and were quite successful), stop trying to show me up because you have a kennel, your making yourself sound very immature, every comment you post you brag about it, it does not impress me, ...
boss122334 3 years ago
...and I do not think you have any more dog behavioral skills because of it
But of course, in your next post your going to say "I've been breeding dogs since before you were born"
You also made it sound like you have no problems, as you said you have not even had one choking incident, so that means you dont have any more experience than with family pets.
boss122334 3 years ago
I'm sorry, but the fact is that dogs do not "sift through" food or whatever they are chewing for inedible objects, maybe hard objects like rocks, but not inedible objects, like rubber, plastic, etc.
That is a fact and I deal with it almost daily, you can argue and argue all you want, but you have a limited number of dogs to get your information from, and in my 3 1/2 years of being a vet, I bet I have dealt with more dogs than you.
boss122334 3 years ago
Just do a little research, please, your not making yourself sound too bright, I know, I know, you want to believe dogs think like humans, im sorry, but they dont. Just get over that and stop thinking dogs are geniuses, please.
boss122334 3 years ago
