He is based on the Joulupukki, the Yule Goat, the original finnish "santa" who would come at the end of the year to feast on mortals and the only way to trick him was to leave gifts in form of food, so he feast upon them till the morning and vanishes without eating your family.

Heard a movie critic on the radio talking about them and Rare Exports today. Fun/irrelevant fact: I live like 25 kilometers from where this movie was filmed :p

Actually I think the idea of the movie is based on traditional view on Finnish Santa, who has been seen as a punisher of children who were naughty... He was not originally nice but more seen as a judge who would bring everyone according to what they earned; something bad or something good. Long before the american Coca-cola Santa...

You would need to leave an offering of food to him so he does not get all evil on your home and family. However if he finds a home with evil children in it, despite any offerings he eats their flesh(in some myths even entire families, villages, due to one or two naughty children in there)

Its "serious comedy".

Basically the director of this took the original Santa Claus (of the old Finnish folklore before Christianity) added a social commentary on present day commercialism and poured in a lot of black humor and then made an over-the-top plot and scenes that have to be acted with COMPLETE seriousness.

No its not a comedy where you get a cheap laughs on characters falling down, etc. Its that other, deeper, kind of comedy.
