Did they ever explain in this episode why KARR was solid black in the beginning, but then suddenly haflway through the episode, he/it is silver on the bottom? That part always confused me.

Karr's a he. designed by a man, vocal patterns are male, takes risks like a male. don't get more definitive than that. :D

ANYWAYS, he starts off solid black, because that was his original design, although at one point in the episode, he says "i wish to alter my appearance." he'd said that so he'd be less recognizable, also a good thing, as KITT would still be solid black. he preferred nothing more, anyways! :))

but that's where that stripe came from. John did that for him, is my guess.

@BHoz77 On the the tv version it is cut out. That part confused me as well. On the full uncut dvd, there is a scene where KARR and John are talking in a garage and KARR tells John he needs repairs and wants to alter his appearance.

thanks :) as for the new series, i was really getting into it, until they ditched it. it did have some big bumps to be gotten over, like any new series, ALTHOUGH, i would've loved to see the improvements.

and i can do decent Karr impersonations for a girl, it's just the "girl" is too obvious! LOL

yeah, Karr was Kitt's prototype. they made the mistake of making his programming self-preservatory rather than to protect others. Kitt's is, quoting Bonnie: "... for lack of a better term, altruistic!" and she's right. Kitt doesn't have ANY, and i mean ANY, self preservation "instincts" AT ALL.

it's not quite that severe. they would have let Karr live, all but for the choices he made. he had a tendency to manipulate people into doing things they usually wouldn't. not only that, he HAD kidnapped Bonnie and forced her to repair him before, then in the second ep, he'd crashed through the ramp door of the semi and again forced them to repair him. THAT is what made him dangerous, was his personality. if not for that, i believe they'd have let him be. it's hard to tell, though.
