  • the 1997 Euro tour is wherer Trey met smack...or opiats at large. Don't ask how I know...I just do.

  • i gess the mumu didn't make it to germany

  • Looks like Gregg Allman playing the drugs, good look Fishman.

  • Thank you to the lower arguments phish is tight as hell now and the shows are sick so if you want to live in96 get your tapes out and stay out of the lotto

  • didn't know Michael Cera played bass for Phish :-)

  • @kissthesky711

You obviously have never seen Michael Cera before...

  • WSP SUX BTW

  • They should make trey garden gnomes

  • they should make fishman garden gnomes

  • great marvin the martian tee

  • Why cant they play this song properly anymore?

  • @hellbornelfchild are you serious?! they play it better now...Trey is clean and ripping it! Whats the last show you went to...get a grip buddy

  • sink just below all the churning and froth, or swim to the light source or fly like a moth, toss away stuff you don't need in the end, but keep what's important and know who's your phriend ;)

  • As far as the lyrics flub goes... it happens. They were playing 80-100 shows a year. Plus, you don't go to a phish show for the lyrics. You go for what Trey is doing from the 5 minute mark and on.

@dksoccerman.... They are no where near this level now... It's kind of sad, really. I listen to shows from 94-98 and have been to several shows recently, and I just want to ask Trey how his skills have diminished that much.

  • @fifaworld2 your a fukin retard...keep "listening" to those shows...ive been "going" to shows since 96' and they rip it just as hard now...i cant stand it when you jerkoffs say trey has lossed it...he's in a different place now...if you dont like it, keep listening to your bootleg tapes and dont pay to see them

  • @78jjackson Don't know if Trey has "lossed" it (as you put it). But for a new generation the new Phish may be cool and I'm happy for people who are still enjoying it. Phish is going to be at Merriwether right in my back yard again this summer and I'm taking a zero. Its a combination of the newer material and the fact that I went to Phish for the jams. They don't push limits anymore. I know my generation LOVED Trey walking the line of sanity high out of his skull. He made some magic.

  • @pajasper I went to about 6 shows in 2009-2010. There were three shows out of the six that were good but nothing epic. The other three were sloppy (and I play this type of music and have for 20 years so I recognize) and full of that newer material that just doesn't measure up to songs like this one.

  • @pajasper blah blah blah thats what i hear

  • @78jjackson Bright man aren't ya?

  • @pajasper brighter than you my friend my friend

  • @78jjackson i see what you did there.

  • @pajasper i was defending trey against people who say he has lost it...read my comment again buddy...and i will be at both md shows as well as both carolinas, both ga's and portsmouth...HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

  • @78jjackson I know you were jerkoff. I was deriding against that abhorrent spelling (it's LOST not LOSSED). And have a great time seeing Trey be inconsistent. Ill be at Spread watching them blow the roof off night after night.

  • @pajasper have fun seeing shitty as "spread" lol and i know how to spell you fucking ass...trey is as consistent as ever and blows anything away wsp plays...have fun douche bag

  • @pajasper now gentleman I love both bands almost seen em even number of times and love them both. Phish cant play what wsp plays and wsp certainly cant play what phish plays. they are just differet. Also I would liek to say come up with something more original that wsp sux of dave schools is fat. Like I said I like both bands but I love phish but they both blow roofs off and melt faces so top arguing. I hate this argument and wsp was much better pre 2000 just like phish

  • 6:20 and beyond!!!!

  • did i hear a free bird?

  • a melodic tension-and-release masterpiece on trey's part

  • i really wish i wasnt 6 years old when this shit went down. ive seen phish recently and theyre pretty fucking aweosme but they arent quite at this level

  • I like this

  • 7:21 is the reason PHISH is

  • @pandafuryface i agree 100% the whole tension and release thing was exactly y i fell in love with this band. I dont listen to them anymore. kinda peaked for me

  • Rockpalast on WDR in Germany is the only show in the world that knows how to capture a live bands sound and transfer it to Television. Every sound engineer in the world can learn from these people!

  • i know i've commented on this vid before, but i watch it damn near everyday- anytime i feel like chill bumps and a smile or feel like i'm taking flight. it moves me like nothing else.

  • @SKOJCV Glad to know I'm not alone :)

  • trey jedi'd this one. watching fish eyes closed and mike was beautiful. Page gave it ambiance. They so nasty

  • I love Phish

  • trey soars

  • the lyrics are aquatic

  • crazy version. don't get to see trey rip it on "Theme" much anymore. still a great song live. gonna have to download this one. trey is in his own world.

  • Weird lyrics.......What do they mean to you?

  • dont dig too deep. you dont want to end up leaving early....

  • Leaving the show early..... freaked out the fuck out?

  • @spreadneck7 It reminds me of flounders and stuff down at the bottom of the deep, dark gray oceans. that's maybe because i'm from alaska hah.

  • just bought tickets to VA saw this one in Chicago and i would like to here it again

  • fishman always plays better when he's not in the dress

  • Haven't heard the Philly 03 cut. Deer creek 95 is my personal fave, I thiNk I play it twice every time. Trey could keep this one going forever but still not be long enough.

  • the philly 03 was good, but i totally second that deer creek 95 call. smokin theme opener.

  • I saw phish 2/25/03 in Philly. There were some great tunes from that night but the Theme was my favorite by far. Its the best I've ever heard and some phisheads that night were proclaiming it the best of all time. I highly suggest checking it out if you love this song.

  • weakest show of tour, shows how good the tour was!!!

  • Used to have the VHS of this show- sick show can't find the tape/disc/mp3 for it anywhere but this TFTB is my all-time fav...that lick Trey hits and runs with @ 4:36ish makes me pthuuuh

  • Haha you know you're a doofus when you read through the comments and notice you posted the same shit "1 year ago"

  • Also my fav!! This was the first phish show that got me "hooked." Also from the VHS. that lick has been making me split open and melt for years!!

  • Beautiful live version of it! I love Page's voice on this- what a great song.

  • swim up!

  • Love the way Page & Trey take turns steering this one. This might be their greatest tune.

  • 6:05

  • so fuckin beautiful

  • first phish song i ever heard live-this version gives me chills and makes me smile all over

  • Comment removed

  • This song etimomizes everything that is great about Phish

  • Oh man, the 6:20 mark just gave me chills. Trey's face is fucking priceless. Sick jam.

  • i 2nd mrj9814's comment. trey kicks it into 5th gear- chills!

  • It almost looks as though trey is either drunk or hungover. Voice is out of key, but who cares, they make this one rockin.

  • Yeah, just assume he's drunk or on drugs. He probably has a fucking cold...

  • ya but lets be honest, wats more likely

  • idk about you but i for one like it that he doesn't sing as great as other people. i still love it, i think he sounds great, they ALL do, and lets me realize hes like one of us

  • i think theyre great singers especially in the studio, it's much harder to sing while youre playing an instrument, and ontop of that theres a high possibility that theyre high which makes everything more difficult

  • sometimes it makes it easier

  • I think Trey sounds vocally tone deaf in this one.

  • well, this particular show didn't have the strongest vocals, but the energy is still there and that's the most important thing. I've seen shows post hiatus that had very clean vocal harmonies but the energy was sadly absent

  • It's Page that's out of key.....

  • Quit hating on Page man.

  • WORD!!!

  • I love how Kuroda messes up the lights at 7:12. He thinks they're going to peak but the tension lasts until 7:22 when he gets it right.

  • Kuroda was so good at what he did. It really does add that extra iota of power and drive to the jams to have a visual aspect in the ever changing lights. Imagine the total high it must be for Trey to be up there playing a rocking solo and having not only the music but a total light show at your command, because Chris has this unbelievable ability to always be locked into the music and improvise as much as the band does.

  • right on!

  • They don't call Kuroda the 5th band member for nothing! This jam is sick, I wish they'd bring back that same electricity.

  • Great Phish!!!

  • fishmannnn

  • Is this Rockpalast?

  • i wish more than anything in the world that someday I will discover that Trey is my real dad....I would even settle for uncle.

  • @operasinger61904 fucking hilarious... sooo tru

  • @operasinger61904 hell i would settle for second cousin's brother twice removed

  • this literally might be the greatest tune ever written.

  • This was the first live phish I had ever seen/heard back in the day, needless to say I've been a fan ever since.-Awesome show- wish they would start releasing dvds.

  • I'm an AVID phish fan and musician and no kidding this jam is phish at their best!!!! One of the best on youtube!!!!!!!

  • totally, i have heard a lot of phish jams from tape trading, and this is definetly one where they are ON, trey is "hittin the note"

  • Thanks so much for posting this...God I watched this on VHS for years and lost the tape long ago. This was a sick show to have on tape. Anywhere to buy this show on DVD or something?

  • Trey looks pretty rough around 6:25, bangin that H

  • Thanks for posting this. I used to watch this show religiously on VHS. Great jam.

  • refreshing small intimate german club gig compared to what was the show had become back in the states

  • fishman looks stiff?? no way. that was his style. always played with good posture. played from the inside out. he never leaned into notes. always extended from his torso out...as all the great drummers do.

  • at 6:06 u can clearly see jon fishman bustin a nut becuz this rocks so hard ...high quality nut bustin material folkss

  • fishman's unusually stiff for this. looks like ginger baker

  • you think baker plays stiff? definateley no.

maybe you were thinking neil pert?

  • No not at all, look at his face, in a different dimension

  • one of my favorite phish songs.... I miss them so much!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love, how they mess up and sing the original lyrics!!!

  • When marvin is out, you know its going to be a good show.

  • this is one of the songs that set the hook for me and started me on the road to some of the best times in my life. brings me back to some great times with good people.

  • Hard to describe the joy this song brings to me. The jam part of this song gives me chills.

  • Devastating, heavy, EPIC (per usual) and yet it still manages to soar ...check out Fishman 6:05-6:07...sums it all up...long live '97!

  • god I miss that

  • well put. i am with you.

  • bringing the smooth heat~!

  • awesome phish this rocks i love trey so much. phish just plays so well together. i love cliches.

  • it may be a cliche (one that i hoped id never become, but it was inevidable) but its true

  • excellent.

  • i just had a treygasm.....shweet

  • the hotness
