I've seen "120 days of sodom", actually. Also the game isn't pretentious as it isn't operating under any pretense, especially one of extreme self-importance coupled with patronising the audience as associated witht he word most commonly.

Anything for arts sake is art, regardless of quality. It's this elitist attitude that leads to repression.

This reminds me of the game Condemned in the fact that I was shocked and unsettled by the fact that the NPCs I shoot throughout the game are not some random monsters, but instead people who are just hyped up on drugs. They even talk or scream at you sometimes while you pound them in the face with a lead pipe. It was a little unsettling for me, but no on the level that I think this would unsettle me.

I really don't think I could play this game, but it does make me ponder my own double standards.

Well, while i do agree with the guy for the most part, he is not 100% with Modern Warfare 2. I had a friend who has MW2, plays it everyday, but never played the campaign, just because he likes multiplayer only (he never knew about that mission either). Not to mention, the game lets you skip that mission. So you can play the multiplayer and the rest of the campaign. Without ever being exposed to the violent terrorist attack mission.

I honestly don't find these sort of things shocking anymore, just because you rape people in the game doesn't mean you'll go out and slap some poor girl senseless. Gaming is a way to escape from real life and do things we would not be able to do them in real life, for example in a game like GTA4 (which had a lot of media coverage) where you could probably hire a whore and kill her etc. Whether we go out and do that in rl is our own choice.

In my opinion the reason rape is so much worse than violence or torture is because a lot of people and gamers are built around the violence and torture. It's hard to explain but what I mean is games have had violence and recently torture built in to these games and movies(Saw) to the point where it's an everyday subject. However, you don't see rape in most movies or in most video games sure people use the expression "oh you raped me" in a video game but that's nothing more than an expression.

Found this to be a very provocative, but at the same time excellent analysis of the game. You did an amazing job taking something that just seems like a twisted and perverted splatter-game and actually finding a subtle and very intelligent theme within it. I still think that rape is a terrible crime, maybe even worse than murder, as the victim lives on with a traumatized sex life, only because of something as 'temporary' and meaningless as a person's sexual drive and arousement at that moment.

I have to say I completely agree, I don't see why torturing someone half to death is more acceptable than rapeing someone. As a girl the thought of rape will always be a discusting thought to me but I feel that if the game is portraying it as the horrible act it is then it should'nt be judged as harshly as it is.
