Bravo that Ian can give anyone "the creeps". He does it so well. And snuff as well as other aromatics were helpfull to disguise the ever pressent stench in london by coal smoke and dust and open sewers.
He is inhaling something called "snuff" which is, in short, ground up tobacco. Apparently it was all the rage in the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe.
On another note, Paul Chauvelin gives me the creeps.... =/
@jennrobertson1 They had a TV series on it. It added some gadets and such, which I thought was fitting, but the emotional tone was all wrong. They really tried to make it a light-hearted adventure series...and, most oddly, they really blurred Percy's character so he was kind of foppish the entire time. The character is interesting because he has a distinct fake personality and the writers of the TV series really didn't understand that.
@MrFrenchie36 And Chauvlin, agent of the French Republic (aka Gandalf) having a thick English accent doesn't bother you? ^_^ I'm in total agreement about Jane Seymour. Very pretty lady, even with mutton-chop hair.
@MrFrenchie36 hmm but this is an English language film starring mostly Brits...if more accurately, the actors who play the French should speak French, not just English with French accents ;)
@MrFrenchie36 why do you find that odd?! Jane Seymour is an Englishwoman. All the actors and actresses in the movie are English, as far as I know. Oh and agree - Jane Seymour is stunning.
@miltonsfound We don't need another privileged capitalist favouring Scarlet Pimpernel of today, rather what we need to bring back is Madam Guillotine for the ultra greedy capitalists that brings down economies and watch as people lose their jobs and starve.
@rivlukcoltd I really hope you're joking here...but I've read enough left-wing blogs to know what you're saying isn't uncommon.
By the way, greed doesn't make you rich. Try it. What makes you wealthy (exceptions for thieves, government employees and inheritors) is generating more goods for society than you consume. It's the definition of profit. You should really take an economics course before you advocate the slaughter of people who make your life better by virtue of their labor.
@darwinkilledgod Instead of reading a textbook why don't you go watching the news? Big corporations are making record profits while the unemployment rate is shooting upwards, foreclosure spinning out of control. Just look at Verizon for example, they made $6billion in profit in 2010 and received $2.4billion in TAX RETURN! Then denied better healthcare for their employees on strike. So enlighten me exactly where the "trickling down" is? Guillotine was a joke, so is the virtue of their "labour"
@rivlukcoltd So...a company makes a phone that beams signals to space and back allowing me to talk live with any member of my family more or less across the globe... and I should hate them for it because they didn't provide this service for free?
No corporation "denied" healthcare. Denying healthcare is what government monopolies do. In a free market, the worst a company can do is not pay for your healthcare. Very different. By your logic, they "denied" them food and shelter as well...
@darwinkilledgod There you conservatives go again, your logic sickens me. So according to your precious "free market" economy the companies should pay minimum and reap the most benefits while disregarding the safety and health of the very people who FORGED the enterprise? You see what you don't get is, the free market economy is GREAT if the economy consists of small/mid size businesses. It is NOT, it's filled with powerful greedy giants who literally earn more than some countries's entire GDP.
I am so obsessed with The Scarlet Pimpernel. (hence, my username). I was wondering if anyone has any clue where I could purchase a ring like the one Anthony wore in this movie. I've spent hours searching but I can't find it. :( it would mean a lot to me if anyone had any clue where I could find it. Thanks! :)
Even though I absolutely LOVE Jane Seymour in this movie I find it odd that she has a British accent and not a French one....always wondered that...but nonetheless still every character is AMAZING!!!
@rad4life1 I read the first and second books, but I still think that I like the movie even better than them. The romance just wasn't the same and I missed the first meeting between Percy and Marguerite which is one of my favorite parts.
I just love how Sir Percy just so nonchalalntly pitches those that guy into the water and goes to the other guy and says "Would seem your friend...is in distress. To the rescue!" Soo cute!!
@jimbrown257 Batman, out of respect for the Scarlet Pimpernel, wouldn't fight him. So, the Scarlet Pimpernel wins by virtue of the respect and awe accorded him.
@jimbrown257 I trust you're not thinking that Zorro is foreign. Diego de la Vega was born in La Ciudad de Los Angeles. Unless a person is not 'American' if they lived in California before it was American... Besides, Percy is cool.
I like this movie, but the camera work needed to be better. It's too close to the actors' faces. Gives me a headache if I sit too close to the screen.
its suprising the English aristocracy would save the French aristocracy. one would think that English nobles would be drooling over all the suddenly vacant aristocratic lands in France! and since France was unstable, it was ripe for a lightning strike invasion! all that land gained then later lost after Agincourt could have been regained!!
@acerb45666555 According to the book, the English rescue the French aristocrats "for the mere sport of it" - because it's fun risking their lives and escaping time after time.
@acerb45666555 Actually, English nobles were terrified of the French revolution. The murdering attitudes and actions could have carried over at any time.
@aDieuSeul It's called an "affected voice", which is another way Percy disguises his true identity. He's supposed to appear to the public as, quote: "a fop, a nitwit." His affectation, attention to appearance, and silliness are supposed to throw any suspicion off, especially as he's a British noble in France. If people think he's a harmless ninny, they're not likely to link him to the Scarlet Pimpernel. Only with those he trusts does he drop the affected accent, and speak with his true voice.
I'm writing a paper on emo culture for anthropology class. I'd like to see the expressions aristrocrates would make when coming across the generations of today. :)
