im sorry to hear about your friend, but he was breaking the law, unlike most of the people in this video, if you can make a landing upon engine failure safely without hurting yourself or others your legal, therefore, flying 5 feet of the ground over a grass field, dry lake bed, and even in a river is safe and legal.
and by the way alot of this is COMPLETELY LEGAL. i wish i had the regs with me so i could quote them. flying over sparsely populated areas, its up to the pilot whether it is safe or not, and open waters. im not saying that low flying isn't dangerous. im also not saying that alot of GA pilots out there get themselves killed doing it. what i am saying is any skilled pilot....GA, commercial, ATP, military ect, is capable of flying low safely if he knows the terrain in front of him.

There's nothing wrong with low flying as long as its done properly. There are restrictions on where low flying can be conducted in order to ensure the safety of people and property on the ground. Its also important for a pilot to be completely aware with the environment he's flying in and its also important that any passengers be consulted and informed about the increased risks associated with low flying. When done properly, risk can be mitigated.

If you're not actively LOOKING (i.e. actively scanning outside of your extremely narrow focal vision) in that type of environment then you're obviously not considering all of the potential hazards that exist down low. Remember too that irresponsible actions have consequences, such as among legislators with no idea how rewarding SAFE flying is and want to take it away from the people who appreciate it most.
do you fly low? i fly low, legally. what should you be scanning for 10 feet of the surface? air traffic? no, terrain, as long as your scan is as wide as your wing tips, and your fixed wing aircraft follows the laws of physics and doesn't fly sideways, you will see everything you need to see. especially over open water as he was, the only situation where low flying requires a bit more wide of a visual scan is if your doing it with other aircraft, or your flying in a canyon type environment.

I fly GA and have done some Pitts aeros/formation/airshow stuff, and I agree fully - flying inverted at 30 feet over a runway is fun but scary when you consider what you're doing to your margins. It's great fun doing aeros at 3,000 AGL too. Bet you the big mouth below flies a desk, or at best a PC. Guarantee he couldn't touch your adrenaline rush in the Hornet!
Gotta agree with hayseed, stupid gets you killed. Adrenaline ceases to flow when you roll into a ball at the end of an airstrip. I had family friends (plural) killed by low level aerobatics...and I see little point in it. It achieves nothing except giving some hick a few oohs and ahhs at an airshow.

@pfcquinn22 I think that airplane was a Red Bull racer. Hayseed is mostly frustrated at how easy these videos make it look. People just have to learn there are old pilots, and there are bold pilots. It is a rare thing to find an old, bold pilot. Bob Hoover is one of those few.

I myself am not a pilot, just a motocross racing skydiver. Prior to his death in 04' (natural causes) we spoke about this type of risk taking. We both wholeheartedly agreed than we never felt more alive than when we looked death in the face and walked away unscathed. Without risking an unwilling participant; to each his own.

I mean flying stabilized low is really dangerous, but just making a low pass... I think is not that dangerous at all
Because speed is increased over the drop, and then when your are near to the ground your speed is really high, so you can convert it into altitude....
