The Flyers' all-time points percentage of .578 (as of the end of the 2010–11 season) is the second best in the NHL, behind only the Montreal Canadiens' .590 points percentage. Additionally, the Flyers have the most semifinal/conference final appearances out of all expansion teams (16, winning 8) and they are tied with the St. Louis Blues for most playoff appearances out of all expansion teams (35 out of 43 seasons).
shultz should be arrested for impersonating a fighter...took a few swings after getting tuned...he owes a big thanks to dupont and kelly for saving him. they should have been thrown out for jumping in...
I love how people think that Schultz was such a good fighter. Name one real tough guy he beat? No one! He lost to Clark Gillies, Terry O'Reilley and Larry Robinson. Everyone else he beat like Dale Rolfe were either non fighters or someone like Magnesson who was smaller than him. He was an average fighter and a lousy hockey player who left a black mark on the game.
@jecroner I love it when I see someone typed my very thoughts!
I think Schultz was a perfect example of Hockey's Golden Era coming to end. You know when players like Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Maurice Richard were their OWN bodyguards. All #9s BTW a number the league still lets players where.
Whereas #99 is league-wide retired but Gretzky needed a Semenko or McSorley to battle for him.
As for "Hammer" Schultz: I think Dr. D David Schultz would've been a better hockey player.
call Schultz wat u will, a cheap shotter, a scumbag, but dont call him a pussy cus he definitely wasnt one, the guy was onely 6'1" yet he fought all the biggest and best fighters in his time and had a huge impact on the increase physical nature and fighting in the 70s and on, u might hate but the guy had a big impact on making the NHL more badass for years, as for the fight, Gillies the clear winner, would hav liked to see the fight go longer and see if schultz could hav come back but W Gillies

Durbano was tough and crazy, but NEVER ranked as one of the BEST fighters in any league. Not even in the top 10. Ever.
Actually Schultz battled some of the best of that era and did very well for himself. Got his clock cleaned a few times, but also had some impressive victories over some rugged guys. Not to mention drawing two of the toughest of the time in Jonathon and Behn Wilson. Not bad for a 'cheap shot faggot'.
The best fighters in the NHL in those days were Clark Gillies, Terry O'Reilly, Stan Jonathan and Steve Durbano. The Flyers were a bunch of spineless pussies who jumped everyone from behind. As for Steve Durbano< my older cousin played for the Oshawa Generals wayyy back in the day with Terry O`Reilly, Rick Middelton, Gilles Gratton etc. The toughest guys in the old OHA at the time were Terry, Durbano & Dave Hutchison from what I remember.
I saw this fight live back then too. This I believe was one of the first times I ever saw Schultz actually take on a reputable fighter-and get pummeled for his actions! Ha Ha!!
@Cooliepops I'm The Hammer. Gotta fight someone cuz I'm The Hammer. Let's see...little guy, tried him. Goalie, tried him. Guy with back turned, tried him. Guy laying on ice, tried him. Hey, a rookie! C'mon, rookie, fight The Hammer! Hey, owowowowowsomebody hold him down so The Hammer can fight fair, okay? LOL
Shultz NEVER was the same again and NEVER touched another Islander when Gillies was around.
WE had and HAVE the biggest, baddest animal in the NHL jungle in hockey history. No one was a better fighter in the history of the NHL than Gillies and also possessed EXCELLENT hockey skill.
people here are all talking shit on flyers but im from philly and way i see it is its a good team... a teams like your family and shit if my bro was in a fight i'd jump in for him winning or not. nice to see your true colors everyone =)
He was pounded quite a few times when it was one on one with a tough guy He rarely won. Gillies, L Robinson, T O'Reilly, W Cashman, Tiger Williams and a few more. You know yourself they jumped people and also went after guys who did'nt fight.
when i was a kid, back in the 70's i was told the flyers were tough, what a myth. luckily there wasn't too much national coverage of hockey back then or everyone would've seen what a buch of back-jumpers they really were. as we are seeing now on youtube. did the hammer ever win a fight where he didn't attack from behind? do he ever fight one-on-one, without his buddies jumping in as he started getting pounded once again?

Well yea Gillies was the best fighter ever. Don't hate on the flyers ok everyone knows they beat the shit out of EVERY team they played including any team that any of you kids support. Don't call them goons cuz they managed to win two fucking stanley cups ina row so don't talk shit dickheads
Typical Flyers. As soon as one of the goons started getting beat, a third man would jump in to "end" the one on one fight. Totally typical Flyers hockey in the seventies.
I saw this live... this doesn't do it justice but whatever. Gillies cleaned his clock. I is probably the best hockey fight ever given the context. The Flyers were bullies and Clark beat the crap out of Dave's head. - Kenneth
@kniebling I'm sure this doesn't do it justice, but it was the best I could do. This is actually two fights. The first was a scuffle that didn't amount to much. The later fight, with less than a minute remaining, is one of hockey's legendary moments.
I love how pissy people get over Schultz and the flyers. He fought everybody, didn't matter WHO you were how big you were he'd get in there and kick your ass. And it STILL drives people nuts LOL
I agree -- he did challenge and fight everybody. But here he was on his way down before Dupont (as he always did) rescued him. Schultz even (I believe) confirmed this in his book.
Funning thing was Schultz was actually a pretty good winger. When he was't gooning it up he could score them goals. He had big goals in there Stanley cup run.
LOL @ eyelikemetal. Nice of you to put Gillies stats up against Schultz. How about all the people Schultz picked on who he towered over??? Yeah........"years" of choking. Also years of going to the Stanley Cup finals 5 years straight. Winning 4 in a row. Only team from the U.S. EVER to do it!!!!
Schultz 6ft 1 185 lbs. Gilles 6ft 3 210lbs. After many years of choking the Islanders finally won the cup. (not this year 1975) They were on the verge of breaking up the core of that underachieving team. Did the Islander fans remember to send Christmas cards to Leon Stickel this year?
You're right when you point out that Sutter's goal in the first period of Game 6 in 1980 was offsides, but they withstood the Flyers comeback which tied the game and forced OT, and they won Games 3 and 4 5-2 and 6-2. They did what Philly could not do, that is win a game on the road, Game 1 in OT. The Islanders only choked twice (you said many. to me 2 is not many), in 78 and 79. In 75,76 and 77 the Flyers and Canadiens, the teams that eliminated them respectively, were definitely better teams
I couldn't tell you how pleased I was when this happened. I was tired of seeing Schultz and Gary Howatt go at it. Although Howatt is tough as nails, he is smaller than my grandmother. Finally Schultz took on the real competition. On top of all the fighting, which I don't mind so much, the Flyers were just downright dirty in their tactics. Hated them worse than you could imagine
Schultz was a punk!...Yeah, you Flyers fans heard me correctly. He made a name for himself by beating up on players who couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag.
Back at ya my Family..... I can tell that you know the history of N.H.L. enforcers. I used to see Schultz make a name for himself by beating up on people like Borje Salming, and others who weren't into fighting.
I'd also like to know who was the punk who gave me a "thumbs down". Lol Lol.
Gilles was a tough one Schultz like to Hold your right Hook and Knock you in the head then Douchepont and Kelly would double team ya Fucking Cowards Gillies could take on all of them with one arm
Schultz is hit cleanly & can't take it so he cheapshots Gillies. So he gets a brainfull of stone knuckles before getting rescued by teammates & officials. The typical 70's Flyer game. Poor Dave couldn't even beat up Bobby Orr. Not to mention that Orr had a higher fight winning percentage by far. So how did The Hammer get into the NHL record books in 74-75 with 472 PIM (sprinkled with 9 goals as a forward-HA!)? By losing 94 fights and getting 2 additional minutes for that nasty 'stache. Amusing.
Not even close to being the the same team, nice non call by the refs to help win that series too, the guy was only 30 feet offsides. Those were crazy good Islander teams though, can't dispute that.
Chak3226, I highly agree with you! In this series when the Islanders came back from a 0-3 deficit to tie the series, at first I was in shock, then I was so pulling for the Islanders to win this series. Because I know that this Islander team would have definately put "The French Connection" on ice in the Finals.
Oh, and by the way, no pun intended in the comment.
Had the opportunity to meet Mr. Gillies at the all star festival in Montreal for the 2009 All Star game. He is a very classy person and a true gentleman. Even though I am a Bruins fan, I respected the effort and toughness he showed on the ice. Would have looked really good in the Black and Gold.
As a hockey fan since 1965, I can attest to the fact that ProbertFire's comments about Battleship Kelly and the O'Reilly-Gillies battles are right on the money. Kelly's loss to Wensink is analagous to Gillies' loss to Lyndon Byers -- both Kelly and Gillies were past their primes.
StevKa -- I can assure you that Gillies NEVER broke O'Reilly's jaw and all five of their fights are on Youtube. Gillies was one of the best but took the two worst beatings of his career from Terry in the '80 playoffs.
The game out here on YouTube where Gillies fights O'Reilly twice omits the 3rd fight of that same game where Gillies broke O'Reilly's jaw thus silencing O'Reilly like a vicious dog freshly hit by a car... (don't think O'Reilly ever fought Gillies again once that series ended...)
That series was memorable and wish that 3rd fight would finally be posted by someone................
BTW - I call the Gillies - O'Reilly series 3-2 Gillies, even tho the Gillies win in fight #4 is a bit of a jump job by Gillies. The only reason it counts as a "fight" is because O'Reilly got up and made a fight. One of the other Gillies wins was very close, but slight edge Gillies.
Gillies was very tough, but in those 5 fights, I was more impressed with O'Reilly's heart, guts, and ability to fight back when taking big shots. O'Reilly didn't back down an inch, and gave as good as he got.
The Flyers were a great team for a few years. They won two straight Cups and then made the finals the next year in '76 against Montreal.
I just read a new book called "Let's Talk Hockey: 50 Wonderful debates" from amazon and one of the chapters is devoted to what kind of path the game would have taken had Philly beaten the "Flying Frenchmen" (Montreal) in '76. It may have changed things, since the Flyers brawling style of play didn't sit well with everyone. The good guys won though, lol
What a joke that those faggot Flyers would jump in to help that fuckn goon Schultz after the shit that asshole caused. It would be like someone jumpiing in to save Brashear in this day and age. Unheard of.
This is something that humbled the legend of Schultz. Philly was still a tough team after this, but the invincibility of Schultz disappeared after Gillies mopped the floor with him
I am a Rangers fan so I am neutral. Gillies won 3 out of the 5; O'reilly even trys to kick Gillies in one that I gave O'reilly. Gillies was the toughest fighter during that period.
Schultz would've ended up in the intensive care unit for a month or two if his butt boys on the Flyers hadn't jumped in to save his sorry ass. Not exactly like picking on Dale Rolfe, was it Dave?
no not really since I'm 45 not the 35 stated. I remember the bullshit Flyers that intimidated theire way to 2 Cups and sent the Red Army packing for 30 minutes live on PBS in NYC ( the only time I ever rooted for PHI ) My point is that Schultz was a self professed pussy who looked for the weakest in the herd prior to a game and made up his mind to be a punk.Gillies was forced into the role and probably would have been a better all around player had he not been forced to save Torttier & Bossy.
ekim must be high... Gillies was soft...LOL! Truth is, he didn't like to fight, but that doesn't make him soft. He fought when he had too, but he was no goon.
What a bunch of pussies the Flyers were. They ALL jumped in to save Schultz's ass and THAT couldn't even move Gillies. One man PWNED the so called Broad Street Bullies.

Shultz NEVER was the same again and NEVER touched another Islander when Gillies was around.

when i was a kid, back in the 70's i was told the flyers were tough, what a myth. luckily there wasn't too much national coverage of hockey back then or everyone would've seen what a buch of back-jumpers they really were. as we are seeing now on youtube. did the hammer ever win a fight where he didn't attack from behind? do he ever fight one-on-one, without his buddies jumping in as he started getting pounded once again?

Typical Flyers. As soon as one of the goons started getting beat, a third man would jump in to "end" the one on one fight. Totally typical Flyers hockey in the seventies.

@kniebling I'm sure this doesn't do it justice, but it was the best I could do. This is actually two fights. The first was a scuffle that didn't amount to much. The later fight, with less than a minute remaining, is one of hockey's legendary moments.

squijy 2 years ago 4
Schultz 6ft 1 185 lbs. Gilles 6ft 3 210lbs. After many years of choking the Islanders finally won the cup. (not this year 1975) They were on the verge of breaking up the core of that underachieving team. Did the Islander fans remember to send Christmas cards to Leon Stickel this year?
eyelikemetal 2 years ago

Gilles was a tough one Schultz like to Hold your right Hook and Knock you in the head then Douchepont and Kelly would double team ya Fucking Cowards Gillies could take on all of them with one arm
Wehategod 2 years ago 2

Those were crazy good Islander teams though, can't dispute that.
chak3226 2 years ago

Gillies was one of the best but took the two worst beatings of his career from Terry in the '80 playoffs.
dempsey00 2 years ago
The game out here on YouTube where Gillies fights O'Reilly twice omits the 3rd fight of that same game where Gillies broke O'Reilly's jaw thus silencing O'Reilly like a vicious dog freshly hit by a car... (don't think O'Reilly ever fought Gillies again once that series ended...)
That series was memorable and wish that 3rd fight would finally be posted by someone................
StEvKEa 2 years ago

The good guys won though, lol

no not really since I'm 45 not the 35 stated.
