this is a copy of a post of Don McLean on this beautiful song ..... "You will find many interpretations of my lyrics but none of them by me... sorry to leave you all on your own like this but long ago I realized that songwriters should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence." DON MCLEAN
This song is Don reading head lines from the news paper. The day the music died is a Orwellian fiction/fact he seems to draw on its not about Buddy Holly. "the church bells all were broken" He seems to be imagining music literally dieing. People stretch this to make it fit to history but i just doesn't fit anything too a tee. The Jester is Bob Dylan??? As some say. No way would Dylan ever fit that bill. Mick Satan? Nice video but a real stretch.

@Vastblackwaters Mate, he dedicated the whole album to Buddy Holly. Look on the back of the American Pie album, it says dedicated to Buddy Holly. He even mentions his widowed bride. When i went to see Don recently in Newcastle, he opened with two Buddy Holly songs. The mans a Buddy Holly fanatic, which was the catalyst for this song. If you cant see that, than your not a full shilling.
Good, but I think you took each and every word a bit too literally.
For instance, when he says "bye bye miss american pie", you don't need to portray a person saving goodbye. We know what he means by that. Perhaps you could have told us what "american pie" means though.
Nicely done. I always thought the lyric "The three men I admired the most, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, they caught the last train for the coast" was referring to a big religious movement in California that was gaining momentum, leading to Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, etc. And there were religious hippies by the mid-60s, I can't remember what they were called. Nice job, though, I really enjoyed it.
I love this interpretation! Prior to this video, I didn't get all the references. I think for the most part, you're right on with it's meaning and references. Great job, this is beautiful!

It was also about censorship and the red scare during the McCarthy era, and the relationship between Rock-N-Roll as an instrument of Satan.

There are many people who thought the Father, Son & Holy Ghost were Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy.
The scene where Little Richard is the Queen is priceless!
