There are far too many policies that are promoted by business, that affect ordanary Albertans. 40 years in office is far too long. The possibility for graft is becoming more imminent as this one party manipulates laws and policy to favour business over the people who built this province.
there is no logical reason for why a liberal/ndp coalition, would not put forward proportional representation. it is in both of there political platforms, and they both would benefit by no longer having to deal with the fptp system disenfranchising there voters with a vote split.
if you look at the liberal green and ndp platforms they are incredibly similar. the liberal platform is nothing like the conservatives. I'm not sure where you get this anti liberal bias.
@squee222 Well based on your presentation, regardless of the combined efforts of the opposition in past elections the PC's would still hold >51% of the vote which would still place them in a position to dominate the Alberta Legislature. Now I understand what you are getting at, I dislike FPTP as well, mostly on a federal basis though because there is a much greater divide between what an Albertan and Quebecer want than what an Albertan from Calgary and Edmonton want.
@squee222 But honestly your solution I can't see doing any good for this province. I do not trust Libs, socialists and greens at all. I don't care much for the PC's but they are a far cry better than them, the Wildrose Alliance does offer some good solutions i think and either they come to power and change things or the PC's adopt WA solutions to stay in power either way its a benefit.
You are still operating under the completely false assumption that a new government would implement a different electoral system as a reason I should vote for a party I do not support.
In your fantasy world the Liberals, NDP and Greens may be the same, but in reality they are not. Liberals and PCs are a hell of a lot more similar than the Liberals and NDP.
I'd love proportional representation. But you're idea won't work for getting it.
So, I need to vote for parties that support policies I don't agree with on the small chance that they'll implement electoral reform? Sorry, a Liberal government would be just as bad as a Conservative government, and probably wouldn't change the system anyways.
so long as we continue to fight over the small stuff we will continue to have our votes be disenfranchised by a political system that does not represent small parties. if you want your vote to count. if you want democracy, we must first bring about a change in government. then a change in the electoral system
proportional representation, is what will make alberta more democratic we can't have proportional representation so long as the conservatives dominate the political structure in alberta. the left does have a chance to win an election, and put in place prop rep; if we work together.
I still fail to see how taking choice away from voters is bringing democracy to Alberta. How is taking away my option to vote for the party I want making the system more democratic.
The Liberal party and NDP are not similar, the Liberal party is a hell of a lot closer to the Tories than to the NDP. It's been less than 10 years since they were led by a former tory, and not long since they fought an election where they were trying to promise even more cuts than the Tories.
