Anyone who is getting offended by "that's so gay" really just needs to get over it. Same with anyone who would get offended with "that's so straight".
I mean really.. Making a commercial about it?.. What a huge ass waste.
What retard came up with the expresion "thats so gay"?I bet that douche still lives with his mom. Also gays should stop being so dam offended about everything, hell everyone should.Im Mexican and people think im from Afganastan, they also call me gay even though im straight, hell ive been rejected by almost ALL ive tri women and even gay guys(didnt even try) and a gay guy slaped me just because he though I was gay and I told him I wasn't(thats descrimination) and ive been called retarded ALOT.
@dasdew2 the insults never stop im I dont give a shit because the assholes calling me that arent my friends,my friends joke around ALOT(yes they say the insults below) but they got my back when shit hits the fan(if I need something,if im in a fight,if zombies attack, whatever),Its either a fucking joke by a close friend or some dumbass with less than half a brain, either way get the fuck over it and move on other wise your just entertaning a asshole with no life.
So now they have PSAs telling you what you can and can't say? I guess we truly have run out of problems in this country. And frankly, that's FUCKING GAY.
Im sorry, I should have said "Thats so bitchy, unfunny comedian with annoying voice who intrudes into random conversations just to be sanctimonius". There we go, its wordy, but it works.
anonimity304 speaks the truth. Seriously, everyone in this world is so freaking offended by EVERYTHING. It's ridiculous. If everybody just didn't give a flying fuck about what others say, this world would be a much better place. I call things gay because it is slang. If anyone is offended by that, you just really need to grow a pair, and learn that there will always be someone who says things that you don't like. Just get over it, and let them be.
@3heishi3 wrote "this world is so freaking offended by EVERYTHING. It's ridiculous...Just get over it, and let them be"
---
You've missed two important points:
1) This is NOT about what the insulted should feel but what the INSULTER should do. I agree one should "get over it," but that's irrelevant to whether "gay" should have been used in the first place.
2) What about the studies showing that all minorities, especially children, suffer lower self-esteem hearing these, and it's NOT a choice?
@lgbtTV4 OK so if this is about what I should do, than I'll have to say that I'll do what I want I don't care. It's basically the same thing. I'll say whatever I want, and I hope you don't get offended, but if you do, get over it. You can say ANYTHING offensive to me, and guess what? congratulations, I don't care. As for your #2. Everybody has a choice. I have this philosophy: "every misfortune that ever befalls you is your own fault, and could have been prevented by you" self-esteem IS a choice
@3heishi3 Wow, way to ignore my points. If you want to be an insensitive jerk, be one. This PSA is not for you, so why the need to tell us "I'll do what I want to do!" Who cares? This PSA is for those are don't realize that "gay" is hurtful, and ask that they re-consider. As others point out here, studies showed that it works. No one gives a shit what you're okay with.
As for "self-esteem" being a choice, that's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Do some research. Duh.
@3heishi3 That's pretty arrogant. You don't get offended so others shouldn't either. Guess what, I love very hot foods, so should I make all my food very hot for guests? No, I let them decide and I don't say, if you don't like it, too bad. Sorry, acceptable behavior id not built around what you find offensive. And according to psychologists, self-esteem, especially among children, is not chosen. Your view is proven wrong, but you're probably too arrogant to care.
"Comment that seems offensive at first, but is actually pretty funny, and then gets taken the wrong way by 1 person who makes me feel bad, and manages to make a nasty situation out of it"
Yeah, I'm sure you want to be "Fucking Fags" right now but no fag wants to be fucked by a loser troll like you. Come out of the closet moron, instead of going to gay YouTube channels looking for attention. I bet you're masturbating to this video. Go look up the word since you're obviously too stupid to know the word "masturbating." Hey, get some professional help. then you can get some real friends instead spending your nights all alone. LOSER.
@MrDissidiaFan wrote "Moron is also a derogatory slur, against the mentally challenged"
This has already been addressed by several people. Your comparison is flawed because the mentally challenged ARE less intelligent. This is objectively and scientifically proven. On the other hand, there is no factual -- or even figurative, historical or cultural -- link between being gay and being lame. Do you know any such study? In fact, being gay is often considered creative and culturally elite.
And many mothers(Who are some real Mama Bears, btw) of mentally challenged children say that mentally challenged can learn the same stuff people in normal mental conditions do, they just take more time to learn.
And plus, I'm not calling you out on a comparison but on USING A FRICKING SLUR!
@MrDissidiaFan Where did I say they can't learn? Okay, so mentally challenged people learn slower, which means they're less intelligent. We have no disagreement there. Talk to a psychologist.
You bring up an issue that's not even tangentially related to the topic. Read the posts. Using your logic, words like "stupid," "dumb," "idiot" -- or any adjective about poor intellect should be banned. If you want to believe that, go right ahead. But based on my work in dementia, it's not issue.
@MrDissidiaFan My brother is mentally challenged and my family and I use stupid, dumb, moron, etc all the time but not to describe him, of course. We use them to describe politicians a lot, or a "stupid move" in sports. I attend support groups and I hear it there too. I don't know who you claim to speak for but you don't speak for me or my community. And that MORON Sarah Palin is certainly no rep for us; many of us are sickened her use of Trig as a PR prop.
@MrDissidiaFan I'm the godfather of a boy with Down's Syndrome and we have no issues with using words like moron, stupid and dumb. I don't understand why you'd think that the mentally challenged or their families would be insulted, especially when some people do behave moronically. What does that have to do with my godson?
@MrDissidiaFan The flaw in your argument is that gay people ARE gay (as in homosexual), but the mentally challenged are not morons, by modern definitions. So using gay as an insult does denigrate gays whereas using moron as an insult should have no relevance to the mentally challenged.
@MrDissidiaFan Slur? Says who? Sarah Palin? Even alluding to her "mama bears" makes it hard to take you seriously. Each year journalist groups publish a list of forbidden words and forbidden usages. Companies and schools, and the FCC also have rules of behavior. So what lists or institutions or anti-defamation groups have included "moron" as a "slur"? You may want Palin to your English teacher but I'd prefer someone who can pronounce "nuclear."
@rickymarte Not one person's mind? And you base that on? Did you do a survey of everyone who watched the video? This video played during orientation at my university and according to anonymous surveys, it was effective in making students aware of the problem that they never thought about, and discouraged them from using gay that way. Maybe if you bother getting an education, you'd realize how stupid your statement is.
@rickymarte I'm straight but am not hateful. And I don't mind being reminded that something might be hurtful. This ad would have worked on me if I was the type to mindlessly say "gay." So speak for yourself. Some of us are caring enough to not want to needlessly hurt others.
I never used to say 'that's gay' in that way, because it kinda sounds midwestern, but after seeing this I wanna start saying it now, out of spite. If I see it on TV a few more times I'm definitely going to start.
@KairuHakubi Wow, pathetic dude. Are you one of those weak-minded morons whose will is easily modified by a simple commercial??? So all it takes is a 32 second ad, and you suddenly want to do things you normally wouldn't. Wow, grow up, get an education and learn to think independently. Oh yeah, also get a life and some friends; maybe then you won't need to do things out of spite. So pathetic!
@KairuHakubi I'm not gay, but your post is lame and stupid. Why do you feel the need to post that? Because it's funny or witty? It's nether. It just makes you look like a kid who needs attention. kinda sad, really.
@KairuHakubi I'm not gay, but your post is lame and stupid. Why do you feel the need to post that? Because it's funny or witty? It's nether. It just makes you look like a kid who needs attention. kinda sad, really.
@obiwanshinobi90 wrote "That is so first amendment. Stfu I will say what I want."
Er, read your comment carefully. First you claim that the First Amendment allows you say what you want. THEN YOU TELL OTHER TO STFU ("SHUT THE FUCK UP"). See the irony and hypocrisy??? You want to say anything you want, but tell others to shut up. Think about it.
And btw, read the Supreme Court's writings on the First Amendment and you'll see that this isn't a First Amendment issue.
Screw that, If i said "stupid" or "dumb" instead of the word GAY, then retarded people would get pissed off If I used the word. If gay people are offended by the word gay, take your lack of american pride and shove it in your a**.
@BordenComputers Read the other posts and think before writing. Your point has already been addressed. There are 2 things wrong with your "logic." 1) There is a correlation between "dumb" and "retarded" because mentally-retarded people ARE less intelligent, so the use is based in fact. There is no relationship between gays and being lame, so the use is based on malice. 2) "Retarded" people are NOT offended when you say that SOMETHING ELSE is dumb or stupid. Your example is irrelevant.
@BordenComputers Why would a retarded person get pissed off if you called someone else stupid or dumb? I doubt if the retarded person would even understand the words. Gay people aren't "offended by the word gay." They're offended when it's used negatively because being gay has nothing to do with being lame.
Holy shit. "America: Land of the hyper-sensitive." We fight for free speech, yet when people use their freedoms how they please, you get insulted? Pick one... since obviously we can't have both. Not a single word, nor phrase, nor joke should ever insult someone. If you are above it all, you wouldn't give a shit. These PDAs actually make me want to use the word often, for the sole purpose of weeding out the weak-minded.
@dilligentdilly wrote "yet when people use their freedoms..,you get insulted?"
Wrong. You have no freedom of speech/behavior in a private establishment. The diner's owner can throw you out for disruptive speech/behavior. If you think you always have freedom of speech, try using "nigger" or "faggot" at work. Or yelling "fire" in a theater. Read the Supreme Court's decision on freedom of speech in schools.
This isn't even a freedom of speech issue. It's about not needlessly hurting others.
@lgbtTV4 Who said anything about private establishments? Nobody is using it in a threatening manner... millions of people weren't killed in association with the word "gay" like they were with "nigger" or "heil hitler". This has nothing to do with bomb threats, fire scares, or assassination THREATS. Like i said, the hyper-sensitivity of our society will become the downfall of freedoms as we know them. First it's banning words, then whats next? religions? civil rights? fuckin joke.
@dilligentdilly asked "Who said anything about private establishments?"
Er, watch the video again. Does the scenario take place in a public area or a private diner? Duh. Now think about it. Again, read what the Supreme Court has said. Behavior that is offensive does not fall under "free speech" unless the primary use is artistic or political. And when in a private establishment like an office, diner or home, the owner can ban any speech s/he wants, as long as the rules applies to all.
@dilligentdilly wrote "This has nothing to do with bomb threats, fire scares, or assassination THREATS"
You clearly know nothing about the history of free speech since we became a nation. "Threats' have NEVER been the sole reason to ban behavior. We've actually become LESS sensitive through time. Do you think you think blasphemy was allowed in the 17th century? And look up The Hayes Production Code. Or Lenny Bruce' trial or George Carlin's 7 Dirty Words. Seriously, learn some history.
@dilligentdilly First of all, you're arguing completely off topic. This video takes place in a PRIVATELY-OWNED family diner, which has no obligation to allow the unfettered speech of others -- no more than your home or classroom does. I happen to think that I have the right to limit the behavior/speech of my children and visitors. You apparently don't. Again, educate yourself on what the Supreme Court has said about "free speech" on campuses and it has nothing to do with "threats."
@lgbtTV4 Once again.. the point of the video is to push people to stop using the phrase everywhere, not just private establishments. Or am I missing the point? Is this directed towards private establishments only? "Excuse me but this video is only directed towards people who are in schools or restaurants, kthnx".
@dilligentdilly wrote "the point of the video is to push people to stop using the phrase everywhere, not just private establishments"
That's partially correct. First, Sykes saying "please" is hardly pushing. The point is to make people AWARE of the possible harm. This is not aimed at homophobes or haters since they WANT to hurt gays, and such PSAs are useless, This is aimed at teens who casually use "gay" negatively, with no intention to hurt gays. The goal is awareness, not censorship.
@dilligentdilly wrote "Is this directed towards private establishments only?"
The "private establishment" argument was a response to those, like you, who claim that this is a "free speech" issue. My point was that there is no unfettered free speech in privately owned places so the "free speech" argument is moot since this video is in a privately-owned diner. Bottom line is that this is a civility issue and not about laws, rules, censorship or free speech.
@lgbtTV4 What the hell are you talking about? Unless Wanda Sykes happens to own this diner it has nothing to do with whether or not the diner is a privately owned business.
@skittleboy15 Wrong. Whether Sykes owned the diner only matters if the question is whether SHE had the right to tell the kids to stop. That's not the issue. No one is talking about HER behavior. The issue is whether the kids are entitled to complete free speech in a privately-owned business and the Supreme Court has made it clear that the answer is no. So yes, it has everything to do with whether it is privately owned. Read the other posts carefully and think it through.
@RationalSaneThinker I really don't even understand the point of this private business argument. I thought the issue was saying things are "gay" is a slam against gays. So whether it is a public place or private place it is just as offensive. Free speech is a concept that applies to the entire country. Yes, private businesses can remove you for whatever reason they wish but otherwise the law of the land applies.
@skittleboy15 Seriously? It's easy: It's not a free speech issue so those who try to argue that this ad stops free speech are wrong because in private businesses, there is no free speech, i.e. A diner can kick you out for cursing. So if you don't think that being a private business is irrelevant, then you also agree that this is not a free speech issue, which is what most of us are saying. This is about not offending others, not stopping free speech.
@IrrelevantNewsStuff You are right that the private diner owner has the right to kick these kids out. Luckily, he apparently doesn't care as long as they are paying the check so I guess the entire video is irrelevant. Wanda Sykes cares but who gives a shit because she doesn't own the diner.
@skittleboy15 Wow, way to infer more in this video that what is shown. Who gives a shit? People like me and civilized people who care about not needlessly hurting others. That includes my friends, my parents, my pastor and a lot of other people I know. I don't know about you, but if I learned that something I was doing might be hurtful, and it;s not something I need to do, I'd stop it just to be nice. But that's me. And my friends, parents, pastor, etc.
@skittleboy15 It has everything to do with whether it's privately owned because the law allows business owners and employers to control the the behavior of people on private property. So to claim that this a freedom of speech issue is pointless. The ad is all about etiquette, and different private properties have different expectations.
@IrrelevantNewsStuff Please go to a country where free speech isn't an inalienable right and start spouting off against the government in a private business, though. Then you'll see that the underlying free speech granted in the United States carries over to all places, private and public, barring any opposition from the owner.
@skittleboy15 This makes absolutely no sense at all. First it's irrelevant to this video because it's about not needlessly hurting others and has nothing to do with the law. Secondly, your view of the law is just wrong. For example, the Supreme Court has ruled that unfettered free speech does not extend to schools, either public or private, and public schools don't have any "owner."
@skittleboy15 wrote "the underlying free speech granted in the United States carries over to all places, private and public, barring any opposition from the owner"
You're remarkably naive and ignorant of the topic. Is profanity allowed in public school? They have no owner. Ever heard of The Hays Code? The FCC? How about the Meese Commission? Lenny Bruce? George Carlin's ""Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television"? Seriously, learn the history of US censorship before you post.
@skittleboy15 At what point in American history did we have unrestrained free speech in "all places, private and public, barring any opposition from the owner"? Who was president at the time?
@dilligentdilly Seriously, try actually listening to the ad. QUOTE where it says that words should be BANNED. Tell me the time marker. Sykes actually says, "PLEASE don't say that," and explains why it's hurtful. NOWHERE is there anything about laws or bans. Rather, it's saying to be mindful that the usage can hurt. Just like using "jew" to mean to swindle. Read the below posts to see how using "gay" negatively has been proven to harm kids, both gay and straight. THINK ABOUT IT.
@lgbtTV4 Pick a point and stick with it. First off, You say that this video doesn't specifically say to ban the phrase "this is gay", yet the WHOLE purpose is to stop the usage of the phrase. Is it not? So I'll quote the ENTIRE VIDEO as wanting to ban the phrase. Secondly, try reading through a paragraph without getting mad and grasping at straws for every single definition of words used. "Fight for free speech" doesn't always mean with war.. stay mad, and stay moronic.
@lgbtTV4 I'm a jew and I regularly use the word jew to define when I'm talking the price down on something. Also, another jewish friend of mine and I have regularly defined that as "us-ing" them down. Now if I'm allowing myself to say that, then I don't have any right to tell anyone else not to. Just as when my former room mate (a lesbian) used to refer to things as gay (fanny packs, dudes that wear tight pants, etc). How about everyone just stops getting so damn butt hurt about everything?
@anonimity304 Your experiences are personal. Research is about an AVERAGE of experiences, and studies show that it's hurtful and affects the self-esteem of people, especially children. WHy be so arrogant and say that since you're not hurt, others wouldn't be too? A small punch won't hurt me, but it can knock down a 3 y/o. And that's the point: It is SAFER not to use these words insuktingly, especially since it is UNNECESSARY. Who said anything about "rights"? It's about COURTESY.
@anonimity304 "How about everyone just stops getting so damn butt hurt"
---
This isn't about the person insulted, but the person doing the insulting. Yes, we shouldn't be so easily hurt, but it's irrelevant to whether the insult should have been used at all. Especially when it's UNNECESSARY. People react differently; i.e. some may link it to a past beating. Studies also show that minorities, especially children, have low self-esteem after repeated exposures. NEITHER OF THOSE ARE CHOICES.
@anonimity304 I guess my question is, if you knew that some people may be offended, why use it? I don't know about you, but my vocabulary is strong enough that I have other words to use. It brings me no joy to know that others may be offended. So unless my intention is to hurt gays, Jews, etc, I have no problems publicly using "gay" and "Jew" only in their socially accepted ways. What I do privately is another issue.
@anonimity304 Then this PSA has nothing to do with you so I'm not sure why you bother posting. The message is aimed at people who care about the feelings of others, and not harming children ... not vocabulary-challenged assholes who makes up stories about being Jewish and having lesbian roommates to justify being an asshole. Whatever; I hope you get the professional help needed to cure your deficiencies that are only now satisfied by hurting others. Sad.
@anonimity304 I bet you look freaking hot in a pair of red Speedoes.or Calvin Klein mini-briefs... Or even a pair of Shavubah crotchless briefs with the extended mesh pouch. Maybe then we can see if you're really Jewish like you claim. Thank you.
Are you offering? Sorry you reek of desperation and I'm not interested. Go stand on a street corner offering dollar bills and if you're lucky, someone equally desperate may give you a handjob. Loser.
@dilligentdilly Both PSAs take place in private businesses, ie a restaurant. So unless you're talking about another video or PSA, you are the one who is saying something about free speech in "private establishments." And what you're saying is that strangers should have the freedom be offensive in my business, potentially annoying other customers. Failed logic.
@BriannaNoob Once again, is the point of the video to curb the usage of the phrase altogether? or just in private establishments? Pick a point and stick with it.
You want to bitch about freedom of speech, lets bitch about freedom period. If so many of you can complain about not being able to say what ever you want and this is a free country. Then tell me, were is the freedom in making laws so certain people can't get married. Lets make laws saying a man and woman can only marry once, none of this " I do till something better comes along" and we pick who you fall in love with. I guess this is the land of the free for certain people. Butterfly
@sweetp1434 Hey man.. I agree that anyone should be able to get married. That's religion butting its head into politics and a completely different topic. I'm all about freedoms and gay marriage SHOULD be legal... no protest from me.
@dilligentdilly As a dad and former civil rights attorney, I'm amazed by your ignorance of free speech in the US and how language affects children. Your comment, "If you are above it all, you wouldn't give a shit" just shows how clueless you are. As someone else already wrote, young children can't differentiate between gay to mean homosexual, and gay as an insult, so they grow up automatically associating the word with something bad. That has nothing to do with being "above it all."
@ProudHappyDaddy The countries that don't coddle their children are the ones moving past America in terms of elementary education. Maybe you should be a better father and teach them right from wrong, instead of relying on the media to do it for you. And now for the kicker, show this video to a classroom full of teenagers.. not only will they think its a joke, but they will use the phrase more often. Why can't you people understand this?
@dilligentdilly Wow, you ask "Why can't you people understand this?" Could it be that you have yet to write anything convincing? Instead, you make pointless arguments like "Pick a point and stick with it." Why don't YOU focus on the ad instead of making grandiose statements about fighting for freedoms? Where in this ad is there anything about censorship or laws? Seriously, I read all your posts and not one shows an understanding of the issue so you choose to argue tangentially.
@dilligentdilly This post proves my point. You start off with "countries that don't coddle their children..." So what? Completely irrelevant to the ad. And you naively assume a causal relationship, i.e. you ignore Scandinavia, which is even more "coddling" than the US (my wife is working on a PhD in education) So you attack ProudHappyDaddy for being a bad father -- as if you'd know. Sad. Try studying Critical Thinking.and see how correct inferences are made.
@dilligentdilly Then you claimed, "not only will they think its a joke, but they will use the phrase more often." Your proof? Again assumptions. Ignorant assumptions. As a grad psych student, I helped program Orientation Week and we included this ad. ANONYMOUS surveys showed that the ad worked, bringing awareness to an issue which most students gave no thought, and would diminish the behavior. That matched previous focus groups and other surveys. Learn your facts and think before you post.
@dilligentdilly and btw, assuming you really are 30, please don't claim to speak for ALL teens or make assumptions about ALL teens unless you can back them up with data. That's pretty arrogant. As a 24 y/o psych grad student surrounded by undergrads, I'd be willing to bet that I'm more in tune with teens than you are and still I wouldn't make sweeping statements about that demo without data. It's sad that you want to assume the worse of all teens.
@dilligentdilly We fight for free speech? Name one US war that was fought over free speech. In fact, name one large "fight" that was over free speech. I don't even know of any large US riot, protest or movement that was done over free speech. Your posts are full of exaggerations and mistakes.
@BriannaNoob Grasping at straws.. "Fight for free speech" doesn't always mean with war.. Are you serious with this response? or just trying to troll? Here maybe you can understand this phrase, since you like to deal in absolutes - "Protest peacefully for freedom of speech".
@dilligentdilly You seem unable to make a focused coherent agument. First, the point of the psa is: "please" don't use gay negatively because it may hurt people. Simple, but you want to make it into something it's not, which is the banning of words and free speech. Manners and ettiquette is all about APPROPRIATE speech. Then you don't understand that yes, people can limit speech in their homes and businesses, which this diner is. Too bad, because it's an importanttopic. Oh well.
@dilligentdilly Read through your rants. It's ironic that you say others jump all over the place when you're the one who keeps avoiding the topic. Sorry, but talking about other topics just shows your ignorance and desperation. I normally ignore such posts but had to write when you attacked others of grasping for straws or not sticking to a topic. It's laughable but also sad because it shows the decline of our educational system. You need a freshman course in critical thinking.
Just being black was considered a sin at one time. The N word was widely used, and of course white people did not think anything wrong with it. Now it is still widely used among ignorant black kids, and rappers. This has nothing to do with if you think being Gay is wrong or right, and you have a right to think that way. it does not mean you have a right to put down someone else by using a very disrespectful derogatory term to describe them. Only uneducated & ignorant people use those terms.
and gay is soo wrong it should be a crime againts nature due to the fatc you dont see other animals gettin gay with eachother and yes gayness is actualy a mental disfiguration that well couse the body to think same sex is ok that is true you cant just turn gay outa nowere you hav to hav this disformatie iv bin studie these creaturs for a week and already getting to the main point of there origin and reason
@alexmercer97 said "it should be a crime againts nature due to the fatc you dont see other animals gettin gay with eachother"
WRONG, moron. Educate yourself. Same-sex behavior has been seen in most species. It has been seen in fish, birds (there are YouTube videos of gay penguins), and most primates. Watch the documentary, "The Truth About Gay Animals." The rest of your post is unintelligible. Clearly, your knowledge of English is as bad as your knowledge of science. Duh.
@alexmercer97 wrote "yes gayness is actualy a mental disfiguration"
The inability to use language is a mental deficiency. Are you having a stroke or are you just stupid? And you're wrong again. The American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Assoc, American Social Work Assoc, American Medical Assoc, American Pediatric Assoc -- and virtually all other academic group of relevant EXPERTS say that homosexuality is normal. So should we we believe them or an ignoramus like you? Duh.
@alexmercer97 screeched "wanda's voice sounds like laud dirhhrea farts in your face and a hairy trucker's ass would look prettyer than her face"
And I bet you're very familiar with both. c Try getting an education rather than cruising gas stations for hairy truckers with diarrhea. As for the farts, I bet they blend in well with your hillbilly breath. Seriously dude, learn to write, learn to think and learn your facts.
Wrong. You have no freedom of speech or behavior in a private establishment. The diner's owner can throw you out for disruptive speech or behavior. If you think you always have freedom of speech, try using "nigger" or "faggot" at work. Or yelling "fire" in a theater. And see what the Supreme Court has said about freedom of speech in schools.
This isn't even a freedom of speech issue. It's about not needlessly hurting others.
@Assault912 Oh really? I wonder what qualifications you have to speak for all blacks. That's certainly not the case with mainstream blacks, educated blacks nor black leaders. Why don;t you see what any black leadership group says about this issue. Check with predominantly black colleges. Check with MTV and BET, and even VIBE magazine. Check if it's tolerated in black owned businesses. As far as I can tell, they all have not gotten "over" the use of "nigger" and still condemn it.
We don't have to like homosexuality or agree with it, but we shouldn't use our disagreements against people who ARE homosexual or DO accept it. If someone says that he or she wants everyone who is gay or lesbian to be murdered, would it become agreeable since it is towards gay or lesbian people?
That is what Hitler thought. And Hitler was a homicidal dictator.
@nicksbuds It is an example: Hilter killed homosexuals ALONG Jews because he thought they were "impure". He thought that every man should be a Caucasian with blond hair and eyes of blue color. If people start thinking that gays are impure or lethal to straights then they would do the same as Hitler and give propaganda that provides a negative image, like using the word negatively, and then can provide negative consequences towards the fact of gays and straights being in the same country.
@uploader109 Bravo. That's exactly it. You children who don't know what "gay" really means will grow up knowing it as an insult, with negative connotations. That is especially bad for gay kids, who already have higher rates of depression and suicide. It's no different than using "jew" to mean swindle.
Thanks for speaking up so eloquently but it's clear that those morons are not here for rational debate, but merely to insult. Otherwise, they would have done some research before posting.
Im gay. and i say ''thats so gay '' all the time and it dosent bother me if other people say it i think the people just get so angry over useless shit
@ashleyrawrasaur Your logic is that since you don't feel insulted, no one else should. What bearing dies how YOU feel have on how OTHERS feel -- or should feel? Multiple studies prove the ill effects on children who hear "gay" used negatively -- especially gay children. Using your logic, fundamentalists don't care if sodomy is banned, so why should you?
The real question is: Why do you need to use "gay" negatively at all? Think about it.
@ashleyrawrasaur I agree with lgbttv. I am a Professor of Social Work who have worked with children's issues for decades and the negative effects of hearing "gay" as an insult is clear -- to BOTH gay and straight children. They both grow up having a negative connotation toward homosexuals. Young children simply don't have the intellect to differentiate between gay as homosexual, and gay as lame. So why exactly do you want to risk contributing to this confusion? Why not play it safe?
@ashleyrawrasaur So you think that low self-esteem among gay children is "useless shit"? Do you even bother reading up on research? Are you seriously selfish enough to think that because something doesn't bother you, no one else should be bothered? Is your vocabulary so limited that you need to use "gay" negatively? Wow.
@bryguyf69 Ah no. i have quiet a high vocabulary just gay people shouldnt take it to the heart i dont and just dont let it get to you. do you think sluts get offened when they get called sluts? No. they obvsioly know they are so it dosent bother them so is shouldnt bother gay people , yeh bulling gay people is mean and all but it should be taken to the heart teenagers are cruel people. Duh.
@ashleyrawrasaur wrote " i have quiet a high vocabulary just gay people shouldnt take it to the heart i dont and just dont let it get to you"
Judging from that sentence, I doubt that you have a high vocabulary. See how many mistakes you can spot. Regardless, you still refuse to address the issue: Why the NEED to use "gay" as an insult when you can already use "lame," etc. If your intentions aren't bad, why RISK offending others? Why contribute to the plight of young gays? Think about it.
@ashleyrawrasaur "do you think sluts get offened when they get called sluts?"
This example is invalid. "Slut" is subjective while "gay" is not. If a promiscuous person doesn't consider him/herself a slut, and you called him/her that, yes s/he would be offended. So what's your point? Gays aren't offended when you call them (or anyone else) "gay" to mean homosexual. They're offended when you use "gay" to mean lame, when there is no reason to do so. Your example makes no sense.
@ashleyrawrasaur Hi Ashley, you really need to educate yourself. I'm a professor of social work and the research is clear. Children who hear gay used negatively experience negative effects. Gay children grow up with low esteem, and sometimes suicidal. Straight children grow up with negative feelings about gays. Young children simply don't have the ability differentiate as adults do. Why not play it safe and not use gay negatively at all?
@Syfoudias Being gay is an insult? Hmmmm, let's see ... studies by Richard Florida show that gays do more to enhance a neighborhood and urban renewal than the general population (see NY Times article or the documentary, Flag Wars). Further studies show that gays are more educated, less inclined to commit crime, are less violent and more accepting of others. A recent study shows that lesbians make better parents.
You know what's insulting? Being a moron who can even form English sentences.
@bryguyf69 Wow, one pretty little gay just get insulsted here, poor you !
Plus, fuck your falsified studies.
Finally, I admite it, I may not be able to form good sentences in English, but in my native language i know I to write. Unless you, even in your native language, you still a gay person...
@Syfoudias Falsified studies? What does that even mean? Go get a dictionary and an education, moron. Plenty of non-English speakers are educated and rely on facts so it has nothing to do with language,. How pathetic that you can't even write a logical reply\, and must rely on insults. You may know how to write in your native language (although I doubt it), but if you can't think logically, don't use it as an excuse. Grow up, moron.
Hey bryguy, you're right. Just ignore that idiot Syfoudias. He's obviously a sexually frustrated homosexual who can only express his feelings by trolling on Youtube. Poor guy probably watches gay porn on the internet and then pretend to hate gays when others are around. Feel sorry for him; don't hate him.
@Syfoudias You're pathetic, and it has nothing to do with your English. You;d be pathetic in French too, It has to do with the fact that you don't know anything about the topic, and are too stupid to learn.
@overwhelming3000 Wow, what an intelligent comment. Being in the closet has you frustrated, eh?
Straight men were put in 2 groups: homophobic and not. Both saw gay, lesbian and hetero porn. Penile size was monitored. Both groups reacted to lesbian and hetero porn, BUT ONLY HOMOPHOBES GOT ERECT TO THE GAY PORN. Latent homosexuality can cause strong homophobia.
Adams HE, Wright LW Jr, Lohr BA. Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal? J Abnorm Psychol. 1996 Aug;105(3):440-5
Ok, so for hundreds of years before it became a reference for homosexuality 'gay' meant happy. Should I now be pissed at the homosexuals for taking the word away from happy people and claiming it as their own? Should the Flintsotnes writers and creators be pissed because Fred and Wilma and the gang can no longer 'have a gay ol time', because a few overly sensitive jackholes object to the use of a word for its intended meaning?
> Should I now be pissed at the homosexuals for taking the word\
> away from happy people and claiming it as their own
Do some research before you post. "Gay" was used BY HETEROSEXUALS to refer to homosexuals and prostitutes since the late 1890's. There may be even earlier cases, but none from homosexuals. So when exactly did homosexuals "take the word away from happy people claiming it as their own"? Give proof. Duh.
@johns721 Where is your source of information? It was the mainstream that used "gay" to refer to homosexuals, and often in a negative context, i.e. to mean immoral. One of the most famous uses was in the 1938 movie, Bringing Up Baby, to mean crossdressing. If you want to blame anyone, blame the mainstream. Th rest of your post is nonsense because it's based on ignorance, not facts.
@johns721 the use of gay to mean happy grew into gay to mean homosexuals and was a term applied by non-homosexuals; the use of gay to be an insult or something stupid was applied by heterosexuals because of derision against homosexuals. Your argument really makes no sense and your solution to the offence the use of 'gay' as an insult causes is in itself unhelpful and provoking.
@Claronium780 "Being anti-gay is the one insult that a majority of people can still insult and a lot of the time it doesn't seem to matter too much "???
Wrong what if I called someone a racist or a sexist would you consider it an insult or a needed critic against intolerence??...Just apply the same principle to the gay issue....
Don't "Gay" people here in America get shunned? If they're found out about? So I think it's okay to use the term. Cause If an actual GAY person heard that then it's their problem. So be straight motherfuckers!!
@BurgeonBlitz yeah you are a total asshole, why is the way you're BORN ok for someone to use as a reason to hate you? Seems unfair, if your head wasn't clogged with homophobic thought maybe you could get that through your head
@BurgeonBlitz Being gay isn't their "problem", it is something they live with and they have to get punished because they can't be what other people approve of. If a gay person doesn't want to be gay, it doesn't mean he would automatically be straight, but he would be fighting something so that everyone would accept him. That means changing for peer pressure, not for resolving an issue.
@uploader109 I'm a straight 50+ y/o mother and appreciate the intelligence you've used in your arguments. The thing I've noticed is that the anti-gay folks rather rely on insults than logic.
@golfworn Hmmm.....if someone is gay that doesn't mean that he or she is sterile....
A gay man may well have a child with a woman while living in couple with his partner....Just try to make your brain work.....
P.S: I remember President Kennedy saying that the Mona Lisa epitomises the highest achievement of western civilisation....to think that Leonardo da Vinci was gay does not make gays look stupid.....^^
@golfworn wrote "2 vaginas cant make a baby also 2 dicks cant make a baby only one dick and one vagina omg gays are stupid"
Studies show that gays are better educated than the general population. Duh.
Look up "in vitro fertilization." And gay men can procreate lifelong while straight women stops at menopause, so should gay men have more rights than infertile women? Think about it, moron. Show me one law stating that civil rights depend on procreation (I bet you don't even know the word).
some people are just too sensitive, I don't know anyone that thinks that saying "that's gay" is offensive and people who do find that offensive need to drag their head out of their ass.
@pallmanni wrote "some people are just too sensitive"
According to what standards? That use of "gay" is discouraged in most workplaces, academic settings and journalism courses. Even MTV won't allow it. So why is your yardstick for "sensitivity"` the one everyone should use?
"I don't know anyone that thinks that saying "that's gay" is offensive"
So what? That says more about the class of people you know than whether the use is societally acceptable. Talk about arrogant.
@lgbtTV3 Common sense? Usually when people say "that's gay" in a setting such as the one in this video for example - they aren't talking about homosexuals or even referencing them at all. The word "gay", although not officially, means more than "homosexual" today and you can't deny that. If you want to get upset because someone says "that's gay" while not intending to offend homosexuals in any way that's fine, that's just you being way too sensitive and stupid.
@pallmanni Well what if instead of saying "that's so stupid" , I were to say "that's so negro".....Do you think that coloured people would behave too sensitively if they find such an insult racist???.......
@cod4andhalo3iscool Get off YouTube, you ignoramus! What if I said that's so "white"?! What if I was negro?! I would have never done anything to you and you just insult my race? That would just hurt my self-esteem and think that I would never have any friends because of my color.
If you think that would help people's lives or make them better, then you are just an insensitive jerk!
@uploader109 you should get off youtube iff you got offended by a joke what a fag and im not even white fail and by the way thats so white is not as funny as thats so negro lolololololol you really should get off you tube haha oh and your probly going to reply to this and try to start a fight but im probly just going to ignore it lol and once moar FAIL!!!
Anyone who is getting offended by "that's so gay" really just needs to get over it. Same with anyone who would get offended with "that's so straight".
I mean really.. Making a commercial about it?.. What a huge ass waste.

anonimity304 speaks the truth.

You've missed two important points:
1) This is NOT about what the insulted should feel but what the INSULTER should do. I agree one should "get over it," but that's irrelevant to whether "gay" should have been used in the first place.
2) What about the studies showing that all minorities, especially children, suffer lower self-esteem hearing these, and it's NOT a choice?
lgbtTV4 4 months ago 18
@lgbtTV4 OK so if this is about what I should do, than I'll have to say that I'll do what I want I don't care. It's basically the same thing. I'll say whatever I want, and I hope you don't get offended, but if you do, get over it. You can say ANYTHING offensive to me, and guess what? congratulations, I don't care. As for your #2. Everybody has a choice. I have this philosophy: "every misfortune that ever befalls you is your own fault, and could have been prevented by you" self-esteem IS a choice
3heishi3 4 months ago
@3heishi3 Wow, way to ignore my points. If you want to be an insensitive jerk, be one. This PSA is not for you, so why the need to tell us "I'll do what I want to do!" Who cares? This PSA is for those are don't realize that "gay" is hurtful, and ask that they re-consider. As others point out here, studies showed that it works. No one gives a shit what you're okay with.
As for "self-esteem" being a choice, that's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Do some research. Duh.
lgbtTV4 4 months ago 21
@3heishi3 That's pretty arrogant. You don't get offended so others shouldn't either. Guess what, I love very hot foods, so should I make all my food very hot for guests? No, I let them decide and I don't say, if you don't like it, too bad. Sorry, acceptable behavior id not built around what you find offensive. And according to psychologists, self-esteem, especially among children, is not chosen. Your view is proven wrong, but you're probably too arrogant to care.

In fact, being gay is often considered creative and culturally elite.
lgbtTV4 9 months ago 3
@lgbtTV4
And many mothers(Who are some real Mama Bears, btw) of mentally challenged children say that mentally challenged can learn the same stuff people in normal mental conditions do, they just take more time to learn.
And plus, I'm not calling you out on a comparison but on USING A FRICKING SLUR!
MrDissidiaFan 9 months ago
@MrDissidiaFan Where did I say they can't learn? Okay, so mentally challenged people learn slower, which means they're less intelligent. We have no disagreement there. Talk to a psychologist.
You bring up an issue that's not even tangentially related to the topic. Read the posts. Using your logic, words like "stupid," "dumb," "idiot" -- or any adjective about poor intellect should be banned. If you want to believe that, go right ahead. But based on my work in dementia, it's not issue.
lgbtTV4 9 months ago 4
@MrDissidiaFan My brother is mentally challenged and my family and I use stupid, dumb, moron, etc all the time but not to describe him, of course. @MrDissidiaFan I'm the godfather of a boy with Down's Syndrome and we have no issues with using words like moron, stupid and dumb. ProudHappyDaddy 9 months ago
@MrDissidiaFan The flaw in your argument is that gay people ARE gay (as in homosexual), but the mentally challenged are not morons, by modern definitions. So using gay as an insult does denigrate gays whereas using moron as an insult should have no relevance to the mentally challenged.
ProudHappyDaddy 9 months ago 2
@MrDissidiaFan Slur? Says who? Sarah Palin? Even alluding to her "mama bears" makes it hard to take you seriously. Each year journalist groups publish a list of forbidden words and forbidden usages. Your example is irrelevant.
lgbtTV4 11 months ago 7
@BordenComputers Why would a retarded person get pissed off if you called someone else stupid or dumb? I doubt if the retarded person would even understand the words. These PDAs actually make me want to use the word often, for the sole purpose of weeding out the weak-minded.
dilligentdilly 11 months ago
@dilligentdilly wrote "yet when people use their freedoms..,you get insulted?"
Wrong. You have no freedom of speech/behavior in a private establishment. The diner's owner can throw you out for disruptive speech/behavior. If you think you always have freedom of speech, try using "nigger" or "faggot" at work. Or yelling "fire" in a theater. Read the Supreme Court's decision on freedom of speech in schools.
This isn't even a freedom of speech issue. It's about not needlessly hurting others.
lgbtTV4 11 months ago 6
@lgbtTV4 Who said anything about private establishments? Nobody is using it in a threatening manner... millions of people weren't killed in association with the word "gay" like they were with "nigger" or "heil hitler". This has nothing to do with bomb threats, fire scares, or assassination THREATS. Like i said, the hyper-sensitivity of our society will become the downfall of freedoms as we know them. First it's banning words, then whats next? religions? civil rights? fuckin joke.
dilligentdilly 11 months ago
@dilligentdilly asked "Who said anything about private establishments?"
Er, watch the video again. Does the scenario take place in a public area or a private diner? Duh. Now think about it. Again, read what the Supreme Court has said. Behavior that is offensive does not fall under "free speech" unless the primary use is artistic or political. And when in a private establishment like an office, diner or home, the owner can ban any speech s/he wants, as long as the rules applies to all.
lgbtTV4 11 months ago 7
@dilligentdilly wrote "This has nothing to do with bomb threats, fire scares, or assassination THREATS"
You clearly know nothing about the history of free speech since we became a nation. "Threats' have NEVER been the sole reason to ban behavior. We've actually become LESS sensitive through time. Do you think you think blasphemy was allowed in the 17th century? And look up The Hayes Production Code. Or Lenny Bruce' trial or George Carlin's 7 Dirty Words. Seriously, learn some history.
lgbtTV4 11 months ago 6
@dilligentdilly First of all, you're arguing completely off topic. This video takes place in a PRIVATELY-OWNED family diner, which has no obligation to allow the unfettered speech of others -- no more than your home or classroom does. I happen to think that I have the right to limit the behavior/speech of my children and visitors. You apparently don't. Again, educate yourself on what the Supreme Court has said about "free speech" on campuses and it has nothing to do with "threats."
lgbtTV4 11 months ago 6
@lgbtTV4 Once again.. the point of the video is to push people to stop using the phrase everywhere, not just private establishments. Or am I missing the point? Is this directed towards private establishments only? "Excuse me but this video is only directed towards people who are in schools or restaurants, kthnx".
dilligentdilly 11 months ago
@dilligentdilly wrote "the point of the video is to push people to stop using the phrase everywhere, not just private establishments"
That's partially correct. First, Sykes saying "please" is hardly pushing. The point is to make people AWARE of the possible harm. This is not aimed at homophobes or haters since they WANT to hurt gays, and such PSAs are useless, This is aimed at teens who casually use "gay" negatively, with no intention to hurt gays. The goal is awareness, not censorship.
lgbtTV4 11 months ago 5
@dilligentdilly wrote "Is this directed towards private establishments only?"
The "private establishment" argument was a response to those, like you, who claim that this is a "free speech" issue. My point was that there is no unfettered free speech in privately owned places so the "free speech" argument is moot since this video is in a privately-owned diner. Bottom line is that this is a civility issue and not about laws, rules, censorship or free speech.
lgbtTV4 11 months ago 5
@lgbtTV4 What the hell are you talking about? Unless Wanda Sykes happens to own this diner it has nothing to do with whether or not the diner is a privately owned business.
skittleboy15 11 months ago
@skittleboy15 Wrong. Whether Sykes owned the diner only matters if the question is whether SHE had the right to tell the kids to stop. That's not the issue. No one is talking about HER behavior. The issue is whether the kids are entitled to complete free speech in a privately-owned business and the Supreme Court has made it clear that the answer is no. So yes, it has everything to do with whether it is privately owned. Read the other posts carefully and think it through.
RationalSaneThinker 11 months ago 6
@RationalSaneThinker I really don't even understand the point of this private business argument. I thought the issue was saying things are "gay" is a slam against gays. So whether it is a public place or private place it is just as offensive. Free speech is a concept that applies to the entire country. Yes, private businesses can remove you for whatever reason they wish but otherwise the law of the land applies.
skittleboy15 11 months ago
@skittleboy15 Seriously? It's easy: It's not a free speech issue so those who try to argue that this ad stops free speech are wrong because in private businesses, there is no free speech, i.e. A diner can kick you out for cursing. So if you don't think that being a private business is irrelevant, then you also agree that this is not a free speech issue, which is what most of us are saying. This is about not offending others, not stopping free speech.
IrrelevantNewsStuff 11 months ago 5
@IrrelevantNewsStuff You are right that the private diner owner has the right to kick these kids out. Luckily, he apparently doesn't care as long as they are paying the check so I guess the entire video is irrelevant. Wanda Sykes cares but who gives a shit because she doesn't own the diner.
skittleboy15 11 months ago
@skittleboy15 Wow, way to infer more in this video that what is shown. Who gives a shit? People like me and civilized people who care about not needlessly hurting others. That includes my friends, my parents, my pastor and a lot of other people I know. I don't know about you, but if I learned that something I was doing might be hurtful, and it;s not something I need to do, I'd stop it just to be nice. But that's me. And my friends, parents, pastor, etc.
RickDrapertheMan 10 months ago 5
@skittleboy15 It has everything to do with whether it's privately owned because the law allows business owners and employers to control the the behavior of people on private property. So to claim that this a freedom of speech issue is pointless. The ad is all about etiquette, and different private properties have different expectations.
IrrelevantNewsStuff 11 months ago 5
@IrrelevantNewsStuff Please go to a country where free speech isn't an inalienable right and start spouting off against the government in a private business, though. Then you'll see that the underlying free speech granted in the United States carries over to all places, private and public, barring any opposition from the owner.
skittleboy15 11 months ago
@skittleboy15 This makes absolutely no sense at all. First it's irrelevant to this video because it's about not needlessly hurting others and has nothing to do with the law. Secondly, your view of the law is just wrong. For example, the Supreme Court has ruled that unfettered free speech does not extend to schools, either public or private, and public schools don't have any "owner."
RickDrapertheMan 10 months ago 4

ProudHappyDaddy 9 months ago
@dilligentdilly Seriously, try actually listening to the ad. QUOTE where it says that words should be BANNED. Tell me the time marker. Sykes actually says, "PLEASE don't say that," and explains why it's hurtful. NOWHERE is there anything about laws or bans. Rather, it's saying to be mindful that the usage can hurt. Just like using "jew" to mean to swindle. Read the below posts to see how using "gay" negatively has been proven to harm kids, both gay and straight. THINK ABOUT IT.
lgbtTV4 11 months ago 15
@lgbtTV4 Pick a point and stick with it. First off, You say that this video doesn't specifically say to ban the phrase "this is gay", yet the WHOLE purpose is to stop the usage of the phrase. Is it not? So I'll quote the ENTIRE VIDEO as wanting to ban the phrase. Secondly, try reading through a paragraph without getting mad and grasping at straws for every single definition of words used. "Fight for free speech" doesn't always mean with war.. stay mad, and stay moronic.
dilligentdilly 11 months ago
@lgbtTV4 I'm a jew and I regularly use the word jew to define when I'm talking the price down on something. Also, another jewish friend of mine and I have regularly defined that as "us-ing" them down. Now if I'm allowing myself to say that, then I don't have any right to tell anyone else not to. Just as when my former room mate (a lesbian) used to refer to things as gay (fanny packs, dudes that wear tight pants, etc). How about everyone just stops getting so damn butt hurt about everything?
anonimity304 6 months ago
@anonimity304 Your experiences are personal. Research is about an AVERAGE of experiences, and studies show that it's hurtful and affects the self-esteem of people, especially children. WHy be so arrogant and say that since you're not hurt, others wouldn't be too? A small punch won't hurt me, but it can knock down a 3 y/o. And that's the point: It is SAFER not to use these words insuktingly, especially since it is UNNECESSARY. Who said anything about "rights"? It's about COURTESY.
lgbtTV4 4 months ago 9
@anonimity304 "How about everyone just stops getting so damn butt hurt"
---
This isn't about the person insulted, but the person doing the insulting. Yes, we shouldn't be so easily hurt, but it's irrelevant to whether the insult should have been used at all. Especially when it's UNNECESSARY. People react differently; i.e. some may link it to a past beating. Studies also show that minorities, especially children, have low self-esteem after repeated exposures. NEITHER OF THOSE ARE CHOICES.
lgbtTV4 4 months ago 9
@anonimity304 I guess my question is, if you knew that some people may be offended, why use it? I don't know about you, but my vocabulary is strong enough that I have other words to use. It brings me no joy to know that others may be offended. So unless my intention is to hurt gays, Jews, etc, I have no problems publicly using "gay" and "Jew" only in their socially accepted ways. What I do privately is another issue.
gradstudentxoxo 4 months ago 19
@gradstudentxoxo My vocabulary is strong as well. But as an asshole, I can't help but find joy in offending the easily offended.

@dilligentdilly Both PSAs take place in private businesses, ie a restaurant. And what you're saying is that strangers should have the freedom be offensive in my business, potentially annoying other customers. Failed logic.
BriannaNoob 11 months ago 3
@BriannaNoob Once again, is the point of the video to curb the usage of the phrase altogether? or just in private establishments? Pick a point and stick with it.

Lets make laws saying a man and woman can only marry once, none of this " I do till something better comes along" and we pick who you fall in love with.
ProudHappyDaddy 11 months ago 4
@ProudHappyDaddy The countries that don't coddle their children are the ones moving past America in terms of elementary education. Maybe you should be a better father and teach them right from wrong, instead of relying on the media to do it for you. And now for the kicker, show this video to a classroom full of teenagers.. not only will they think its a joke, but they will use the phrase more often. Why can't you people understand this?
dilligentdilly 11 months ago
@dilligentdilly Wow, you ask "Why can't you people understand this?" Could it be that you have yet to write anything convincing? Instead, you make pointless arguments like "Pick a point and stick with it." Why don't YOU focus on the ad instead of making grandiose statements about fighting for freedoms? Where in this ad is there anything about censorship or laws? Seriously, I read all your posts and not one shows an understanding of the issue so you choose to argue tangentially.
IrrelevantNewsStuff 11 months ago 5
@dilligentdilly This post proves my point. You start off with "countries that don't coddle their children..." So what? Completely irrelevant to the ad. And you naively assume a causal relationship, i.e. you ignore Scandinavia, which is even more "coddling" than the US (my wife is working on a PhD in education) So you attack ProudHappyDaddy for being a bad father -- as if you'd know. Sad. Try studying Critical Thinking.and see how correct inferences are made.
IrrelevantNewsStuff 11 months ago 5
@dilligentdilly Then you claimed, "not only will they think its a joke, but they will use the phrase more often." Your proof? Again assumptions. Ignorant assumptions. As a grad psych student, I helped program Orientation Week and we included this ad. ANONYMOUS surveys showed that the ad worked, bringing awareness to an issue which most students gave no thought, and would diminish the behavior. That matched previous focus groups and other surveys. Learn your facts and think before you post.
IrrelevantNewsStuff 11 months ago 5
@dilligentdilly and btw, assuming you really are 30, please don't claim to speak for ALL teens or make assumptions about ALL teens unless you can back them up with data. That's pretty arrogant. As a 24 y/o psych grad student surrounded by undergrads, I'd be willing to bet that I'm more in tune with teens than you are and still I wouldn't make sweeping statements about that demo without data. It's sad that you want to assume the worse of all teens.

BriannaNoob 11 months ago 3
@BriannaNoob Grasping at straws.. "Fight for free speech" doesn't always mean with war.. Are you serious with this response? or just trying to troll? Here maybe you can understand this phrase, since you like to deal in absolutes - "Protest peacefully for freedom of speech".
dilligentdilly 11 months ago
@dilligentdilly You seem unable to make a focused coherent agument. First, the point of the psa is: "please" don't use gay negatively because it may hurt people. Simple, but you want to make it into something it's not, which is the banning of words and free speech. Manners and ettiquette is all about APPROPRIATE speech. Then you don't understand that yes, people can limit speech in their homes and businesses, which this diner is. Too bad, because it's an importanttopic. Oh well.

Now it is still widely used among ignorant black kids, and rappers. This has nothing to do with if you think being Gay is wrong or right, and you have a right to think that way. it does not mean you have a right to put down someone else by using a very disrespectful derogatory term to describe them.
And Hitler was a homicidal dictator.

nicksbuds 1 year ago
@nicksbuds It is an example: Hilter killed homosexuals ALONG Jews because he thought they were "impure". He thought that every man should be a Caucasian with blond hair and eyes of blue color. If people start thinking that gays are impure or lethal to straights then they would do the same as Hitler and give propaganda that provides a negative image, like using the word negatively, and then can provide negative consequences towards the fact of gays and straights being in the same country.
uploader109 1 year ago
@uploader109 Bravo. That's exactly it. You children who don't know what "gay" really means will grow up knowing it as an insult, with negative connotations. That is especially bad for gay kids, who already have higher rates of depression and suicide. It's no different than using "jew" to mean swindle.

Think about it.
lgbtTV4 1 year ago 12
@lgbtTV4 Yeh it dosent bother me. When people tease me and call me gay i go yeh well your straight. LOL sexuality shouldnt bother people fuck sake.

MrsMollyMalloy 11 months ago 4
@ashleyrawrasaur So you think that low self-esteem among gay children is "useless shit"? Do you even bother reading up on research? Are you seriously selfish enough to think that because something doesn't bother you, no one else should be bothered? Is your vocabulary so limited that you need to use "gay" negatively? Wow.

Think about it.
lgbtTV4 1 year ago 2
@ashleyrawrasaur "do you think sluts get offened when they get called sluts?"
This example is invalid. "Slut" is subjective while "gay" is not. If a promiscuous person doesn't consider him/herself a slut, and you called him/her that, yes s/he would be offended. So what's your point? Gays aren't offended when you call them (or anyone else) "gay" to mean homosexual. They're offended when you use "gay" to mean lame, when there is no reason to do so. Your example makes no sense.
lgbtTV4 1 year ago 3
@ashleyrawrasaur Hi Ashley, you really need to educate yourself. I'm a professor of social work and the research is clear. Children who hear gay used negatively experience negative effects. Gay children grow up with low esteem, and sometimes suicidal. Straight children grow up with negative feelings about gays. Young children simply don't have the ability differentiate as adults do. Why not play it safe and not use gay negatively at all?

Do some research before you post. "Gay" was used BY HETEROSEXUALS to refer to homosexuals and prostitutes since the late 1890's. There may be even earlier cases, but none from homosexuals. So when exactly did homosexuals "take the word away from happy people claiming it as their own"? Give proof. Duh.

lgbtTV4 1 year ago 19
@johns721 Where is your source of information? It was the mainstream that used "gay" to refer to homosexuals, and often in a negative context, i.e. to mean immoral. One of the most famous uses was in the 1938 movie, Bringing Up Baby, to mean crossdressing. If you want to blame anyone, blame the mainstream. Th rest of your post is nonsense because it's based on ignorance, not facts.
MrsMollyMalloy 1 year ago 6
@johns721 the use of gay to mean happy grew into gay to mean homosexuals and was a term applied by non-homosexuals; the use of gay to be an insult or something stupid was applied by heterosexuals because of derision against homosexuals.
