  • I never noticed that they don't have 7ths. Now I can't stop hearing it. How interesting...

  • Jo, This is a special tuning.... though the standard tuning is missing 7ths (and 4ths too)!

  • Cool! Thnx!

  • How did I get here from ponies?

  • Are these instruments originally from Africa?

  • Yes, the kalimba was originally from Africa - now people make them all over the world. The frame drum of the sansula is a very recent innovation, made by Peter Hokema around 2000. -Mark

  • what kind of metal strips do you use?

  • @pax918273 I've heard of people using rake tines for kalimbas.

  • Street sweeper metal brush tines, bicycle spokes, pieces of bamboo,

metal straps... lots of things. 1300 years ago, Iron.

    And now spring steel.

  • These tines are made of plated spring steel. I don't make these, they are made in Germany by Peter Hokema's company.

  • very nice!

  • superb....where can i get a good kalimba from?

  • @undercoverdreams

Dear Dreams - my business is kalimbamagic and you can find me on the internet - just search for KalimbaMagic. I sell kalimbas made by

African Musical Instruments in South Africa,

Thomas Bothe and Hokema in Germany.

Catania and Goshen in the USA.

All are good quality instruments that I myself would play in a recording or performance. -Mark Holdaway
