'America At War' - NBC News Today - January 17, 1991

I remember watching this. And what a STUNNING difference in how our media NOW COVERS OUR WARS. There's no hype here. NBC DID NOT adopt the government's moniker for the "operation." Gumble reminds viewers early that there was no formal declaration of war. The studio is subdued, no visual distractions. The narration is matter of fact but not boring. It's PROFESSIONAL, not glamorized. This is also the first war the media was not allowed to witness up close. And it made the career of Katy Couric.

And the war is considered over as of last month with Iraq, 20 years later.

I remember this day. I was laying on my M1A1 Abrams in the middle of the Desert and the jets flying over us woke me up and then I realized it was "GAME ON!"

I wonder if the January 17th, 1991 "Today" show was broadcast live in all time zones (meaning that California viewers saw the program beginning at 6 A.M. PST; given that the show began an hour earlier than usual, at 6 A.M. EST).
