I just ordered your DVD and Cookbook. Your such a lovely person to watch and listen to. Thank you for giving us your time and sharing with the rest of the world what life is really all about. Just plain and very simple. You should have your own show on the cooking channel. Rachael Ray would love you! She should get you on her show! Are you listening Rachael???
Someone took the time to listen to her stories. I hope more people realize there is a generation of stories waiting to be heard. How much she must have enjoyed her days filming these videos with her grandkids (I'm guessing). They now have a piece of their history for generations to come. Bravo! I love how she says "use your common sense", so true. Ms. Clara your a hero.
Clara reminds me of my grandma, if she were still alive would be the same age. My grandma was from Illinois, had the same disposition, and even cut food just like Clara. Watching Clara takes me back to my childhood cooking in the kitchen with my grandma.
I have always, since I was a young child enjoyed listening to the elders, the grandmas and grandpas out there. I have a mental collection of many many stories from the depression, including my dear mom's. They were poor but happy, and we know money does not buy happiness. Everyone did something, kids participated and were needed and knew it! People were more intimate and social and that is the natural state of being human, not like it is now with TV's computers, and fast ready made foods!
I think the you were far healthier than the kids today with all the processed foods and stuff. You may not have had much in the Great Depression, but you had the essentials and you learned to live with it and love it. Thank you for sharing your stories and your recipes. It's a pleasure to watch your videos. :)
Like my late grandmothers and mom, Clara's gotten along just fine without the fancy electric kitchen gadgets so many people seem to 'need' including a dishwasher!! I love you Clara, can I adopt you as a grandmother!!!?
I'm soon 32 and I had roller skates like that. I loved them. They were great. And I use to go mushroom picking with my grandparents a lot. Now I take my kids when we go to visit my family in Czech republic. This video is brilliant.......as are Clara's other ones. But somehow this remind me a bit of my childhood. It is strange as it was in completely different era and country. :o)
in my history class if we make a depression era food and bring it in we get extra credit becuase we are having a "depression era food feast"! thanks for sharing this recipie!(:
I Love you Ms. Clara!!!! I was looking for recipes just like my grandma made and here you are. Love the videos and the story's.Keep up the great work!!!
I love her videos. I would like to point out one small error. Mushroom have no nutrisional value at all and contain no protien so they aqre not really a good substitute for meat. That said how ever I have fixed mushrooms like this and they are really tasty.
A mushroom is nothing but a fungi that has a fleshy body and bears spores. They are popular for their taste and flavor. Usually people think that mushrooms have no nutritional value. But it is not so and mushrooms have a number of health benefits associated with them. Mushrooms are low in calories, low in carb, low in sodium, no cholesterol and contain zero fat. Moreover, they contain vitamins and useful minerals like potassium, copper, selenium, magnesium etc and are high in dietary fibers.
@gramarmy I stand corrected. I was raised that mushrooms were nothing more then a filler with nothing good or bad in them. After some research I find I was wrong.
Well, 95 years old! I started watching your videos last year and you made them at 91. You aged 4 years in one! lol Keep up the videos Clara, I love them.
I bought her book and it's so wonderful, I highly recommend it nicely put together. If you enjoy these videos buy the book it's fantastic!!! We Love you Clara!!!! you are such a joy to watch. xo
I almost passed up watching you, Clara, but I refreshed the page, and I am so happy that I did. You are so amazing, I think I might go cross-country just to hug you.
I REALLY hate to say this but I feel it to be true..... Kids are, for the most part, softees nowadays. Video games & tv babysitting is robbing them of mentally stimulating and physically demanding sports and games that actually get them together with their community, friends and family! Lets make a move to liberate our youth into reality!!!!!!
my eyes are so full of tears, to the youth out here, you should really take heed to this because here is what you call ''a real woman'' god bless her heart. she can cook, clean, healthy, sweet, busy, she gets things done. at 94 she is still at it., a true definition of a woman, she is cherished and probably don't know it, she probably don't care either. woman like this don't need to fit in or pretend, they are home-makers with purpose and wisdom, this woman along with my grandma are geniuses.
@BaptistGiirl - thank you young earth, I was worried nobody else realized how special this woman really is. I would be blessed to find a woman with her strength- she is a role model to all young girls
heheh nice 94 years old #### in new videos 95 years old oh yes how fast the time goes around D: so we are lucky i hope this will never end i want learn more from you :D
My parents had fond memories of depression food. Sometimes my mom would make up a good gravy, throw a few scraps of this and that into it, put it on toast, and call it "poor man"s pie".
Its true, mushrooms are a good substitute for meat. If you are a vegetarian seving guests who are meateaters, cook up some mushrooms and onions and then make some gravy using the broth they give off. Put mr/on back into the gravy and pour it on anything -- it feels like meat. Is a good way to make a vegetarian Thanksgiving feel more traditional, if you like tradition.
what I love about this is, how she does not care how she cuts things, or how she arranges her food, as long as it gets in there, it cook, and she's no longer hungry, Which is how she lived back in the depression.
I don't really cook, but I just started watching these videos when it caught my eye when I was on FailBlog.
I'm sooo happy it brought me here. Clara is so adorable, and I love listening to her little stories about what she used to eat and what it was like in the Great Depression. Even though the stories are about a bad time, the way she tells makes me feel the exact opposite of depressed. She never mentions the hard times, just the good little moments. And thats just so sweet :)
Forget all these trendy chefs on food network or wherever. Clara's kind of cooking is practical, affordable, delicious and you don't have to be a chef to cook her recipies. It's the kind of cooking my grandmother did before she passed away but I don't have all the recipies. I'm going out and getting a copy of Clara's Kitchen for everyone in my family. Her cooking style is truly FAMILY style! Love ya Clara! You are a true sweetheart!
My family loves mushrooms, I'll have to make this for my mom one day when I visit over Spring Break. Thanks a lot Clara for keeping Ramen out of one more college dorm :P
@GuyWhoLikesCultStuff, oh my gosh, that is so weird, i was JUST thinking the same thing! then i saw your comment and it summed up my exact feelings, hahaha!

Make some story-telling videos about the Depression or any story you want so you can make more videos! Cause you can run out of recipes but will not run out of stories! Its just that I want to see more videos of you even if its not about cooking!
Please LIKE so Clara can see!

Clara, you are such a cute & sweet lady! I wish you were my Grandmother! My Grandmothers have past away now! Keep making these videos! I just came screws them today, so I haven't tried any yet. I have put all of your videos that I've watched in favorites though, so I can try these later. Thanks

Clara, thank you for inspiring me to live a more simple life, to not take things for granted, and to live a more loving life. Your stories and food have changed me. As a single father of a 2 year old boy I thank you, he thanks you, and we look forward to each time we get to see you!

Well...you used 90% silver quarters in your days. We have fake quarters nowadays, so the same trick wont work.
Silver is a natural antibacterial, it kills germs and virus's. The silver would change color because it was doing its job and removing impurities.
