Obito died to protect Kakashi when they were kids, and that is how Kakashi got the sharingan.

Madara is the founder of the uchiha clan, he and the first had differences of opinion on how konoha should be ran so he left, came back, fought the first, and pretended to die. Sent the kyuubi to attack the hidden leaf and is now tobi the real leader of the akauski(sp.)
