@rickjhunter Fuel cells produce electricity that drives the vehicle forward. Why seperate hydrogen from h2o (for example) when a wind mill, solar panel, or something eliminates the middle man? I've never seen a hydrogen "gas" pump but I can see a whole bunch of electrical sockets from where I'm sitting.
its 1500 lbs lighter,a real test would be same weight elect and gas cars, the electric would still win, why?because the electric produce a instant on full power and torque, the torque stays the same the whole race, unlike the gas engine.

Never be cheap? Think again. Oil companies and car companies needed heavy subsidies to get off the ground and become ubiquitous, electric and alternative energy cars will be no different.
But large company produced electric cars will never be cheap. This is what the public wants but the big players will gobble up the small players until the new oil is all things electric.
Wright didn't optimize it for performance, Ariel did.
This isn't a real test. It's like trying to prove a 4 cylinder engine is better than an 8 by racing a Hayabusa and a Mustang. A bike may be quicker, but we're not all riding bikes. People want doors and windows and roofs.
Also, those aren't designed to be drag cars. Put that electric around a track and see what the weight of the batteries do to the handling. I'd be willing to bet that both the gas engines are quicker around a track.
Who said it's cheaper technology? You know how much the battery pack to run that is? AND that battery doesn't last forever. It'd be like having to replace the engine in your car every 5 years. If they aren't concerned with racing, then why are they showcasing their car with a race?
proof of concept and so what if you have to replace batteries every 10 years using lead acid batteries. fact is your spending next to nothing on fuel there is nothign to service but the windscreen wiper fluid and check the pressure on the tyres. An interesting fact is that generally for every dollar of petrol you put in a car you should put a dollar away for servicing and maintenance on that car. With EV
There are Conventional brakes oil filters air filters fuel filters radiators diff fluids etc
tyres and lubrication are included in maintenance. and yes petrol costs a lot more than electricity. do you really think well be burning coal for the rest of our lives? if you do your completely miss informed on the current state of renewable energies. There are enough renewable energy sources out there to power the world for millions of years.
research this yourself
so maybe you should start looking towards the future instead of living in the past. u was a mechanic i know how much it costs.
of course they will jack up the prices, even if we end up in the same situation for price... we wont be searching the dregs of this world sending in our armies and seizing oil supplies to run these petrol / diesel cars. once the demand is gone there wont be need for for people to be exploited for oil.
also keep in mind the amount of carcinogens that are also produced from burning dirty fuels its not just CO2 they put out but more harmful things that are toxins.
yeah well companies are part of the problem, war/fighting will always be there while there are armies to fight them and politicians who dont know how to solve problems. all it is is empire building and alot of wars make alot of people money, weather its plundering the new land for resources or gun sales. Most wars are a way of expanding the power/wealth of one country. sure dioxin is stupid but thats the way our society is raised.. cyclical consumption.. thats our one goal in life. we consume
also you should research a little bit into what happens to waste oil from the stuff you lubricate your engine with. air tomatoes and water are not scarce. although im sure tomatoes will become scarce when we run out of fertilizers.
A lot of ignorance here. The car is a proof of concept, nothing more. He has proved that a gas car cant match the performance of an electric car. There was no point in designing a whole new car to prove a point, hence modifying an Atom.
Even a McLaren F1 weighs almost twice as much as this thing, and saying that isn't an actual supercar is like saying America aren't actually a superpower.
@C63AMGestate I drive a 5400BC model A pleidian ufo. it's a little old but it moves nicely.
it's not about what I drive or what's available. it's about what they pretend it is vs what's possible to make. it's not impressive. not the old nor the new.
@C63AMGestate no I have this affliction called intelligence. makes me not want primitive steam locomotives and dream of something better. if you wanted to be just a little less moronic you could say I hate combustion engine cars. that would be much more accurate. I really like super efficient performance electric cars though
after "FAKE!" you just stated the obvious. a wrightspeed x1 is an ariel atom with an electric engine, just like an acura nsx is a honda nsx with an acura badge
yeah well maybe i didn't pick the best analogy there but my point was that it's stupid to bitch about wrightspeed x1 being fake by saying it's an ariel atom with an electric engine. just as stupid as saying an acura nsx is fake cuz it's a honda nsx with an acura badge. btw acura < honda, not = honda, it's honda's, honda created acura, but acura doesn't = honda
well at least you get what i mean by Honda = Acura. If i get a car say a Ford and stick an electric engine in it, can i go around claiming it to be my invention?
of course you can, in that scenario you got a Ford an stuck an electric engine in it, it's your "invention", it's your doing. not that ford hasn't done it with it's own cars but then the question isn't "whose idea was it" anymore, it's "which one is best, your invention (a random Ford with an electric engine you stuck in it) or Ford's own electric cars?". besides this wrightspeed could kick an ariel atom 3's ass
Doesn't have to be heavy to generate this much power as do the others. Most don't realize that electric engines don't have the same mech limits. That Ferrari has max HP at certain RPMs - has to build to it. Electric engines have constant torque at all times.
honestly, every time I see videos like these, they're all so convincing! I see no consequences for electric cars except for the potentially sudden impact in the economy. One of the elementary things I learned in Econ class is it's close ties with ecology (i.e. electric cars)
Watched "Who Killed the Electric Car?" I am a believer lol
Something else they teach you in Econ: people go where the money goes. If you're in the auto industry and you don't move towards non-petroleum power, you lose. The petroleum powered industry will die because a new one will take its place, and capital, labor and consumers will move in the same direction. There will be no sudden impact on the economy because that kind of change can't take place overnight.
I cannot believe the utter stupidity of the majority of most of the comments on this video. The internal combustion engine, as we know it, is history. It is simply unsustainable. Electric cars are the future. Get over it!
As an avid commuter cyclist I agree. But cycling isn't the answer for all. Parents with young kids and older people for instance. Also you must constantly battle the weather on a bicycle, not everyones cup of tea, and not always convenient.
The other reason is because it is fun and challenging just the same as any other sport. There is a multi-billion dollar global industry built around motor racing which all boils down to the fact that people love to push the limits and enjoy the rush of speed and racing. Humans will always push the limits and going fast is one of the most rewarding ways to do that.
The ultimate future will be lithium ion batteries kicking out riduculous power and being recharged via photosynthetic cells on the cars outer skin! Use of dynamos and gyroscopes to maximize efficiency! Petrol is on slow decline! What a great little car.
Hopefully not. Inefficient, dirty(despite what the nuke companies say),dangerous, entirely dependent on oil anyway.
It takes over 20 years for a nuclear facility to achieve a total EROEI of '1'.
The US gov is still scrambling to find a safe place to store its waste. Previous plans have tanked due to ground water and fault-line concerns. Electricity won't do you any good if your whole watershed is radioactive.
Nuclear power is really the only option in the long term. Very efficient ( one kilogram of plutonium contains more energy than a trainload of coal ) and relatively clean. Coal fired powerplants leak more radioactivity into the surrounding area than nuclear facilities due to trace amounts of radioactive minerals in the coal. Sure, waste is a big issue. But with research into other cycles such as the thorium cycle, maybe a solution can be found there. There is a *lot* of energy bound up in matter.
Not gonna happen any time soon. If you plot global energy consumption over history you will see that our energy requirements are increasing at an exponential rate that way outstrips even population growth. There is a physical limit to the Earths population, but I think energy usage will continue its climb well after the population has stabilised. More technology = more energy requirements. One man today can do with machines what used to be the work of hundreds. Imagine the future?
Solar etc, as you put cannot yet deliver the baseload demands of cities. It may be able to power moderate size towns, but the bulk of the power will still be needed to be generated in some other way. Unless, as you put it we "scale back". What would you have scale back to, exactly? Apart from a global catastrophe, there will be no voluntary "scaling back". What is this so-called "Progress Trap"?
Essentially, short term gains are thought of as good, even if in the long term they make things worse.
As for scaling back...I doubt its gonna happen (see above), but it is the only truly sustainable choice. How much? As much as is necessary.
I don't believe technological increase is "progress". Progress towards what? When looking at history and technology, I ask only one question: Does it make people happier? If it does not, it is useless. Are people happier now than in the past? Doubtful.
If we kept 'progressing', increasing population, building intensive farming, energy production, etc. we could eventually remove the ability of the planet to sustain us without our artifice, or at least make it a terrible place to be.
Should something go wrong in a world at it's maximum, we'd be screwed. If something went wrong 200 years ago...no biggy. Now? Some problems, but we'd recover easily.
We make the consequences of failure and catastrophe worse each time we "find a solution".
All three are at the highest levels in human history. Average life expectancy, at least in the "west" has more than doubled in the last century. While it's impossible to say whether the dead are happy, at least a few of the living might be, so happiness is definitely on to up! ;-)
What time in the "good old days" would you like to return to exactly?
Not "return to the good old days". Find a truly sustainable way of doing things. Maybe that means reducing technological levels.
Longevity has little to do with happiness...you never know when you might die anyway. Besides, it only recently that your statement is true. Tribes today have long lives, and bodies found in Celtic and Norse burials were, on average, longer lived than us. Lifespan dropped during the dark ages, and through the industrial revolution...we have only just got it back.
"A happy person 2000 years ago was just as content as a happy person today." There were only 200 million people alive back then. For simplicity lets assume about the same percentage were happy then as now. With 6 billion folks around today, we are therefore 2900% happier today. You might want to check for facts regarding longevity. Some rare individuals made it to what we could consider an old age, but the majority died very young. Remember there was no antibiotics or sanitation back then.
Nuclear power is the answer now stfu. Its clean, cheep and REUSEABLE. Only 3% of of the uranium shit is used before being replaced. France has a program where they reprocess this, utilizing the other 97% of power avlable. now stfu!
the electric car should weight as much as the Ferrari and the Porsche if you want to compare it. Also the electric car don't meet the safety standards of Americans laws
If you believe that, you don't know what you're talking about.
The petrol powered 300 bhp supercharged inline 4 Ariel Atom that this electric car is based on (go google if you dont believe me) weighs roughly the same (batteries are heavy)and is much much, MUCH faster, so basically, this video is like saying "a Bear will kill a rabbit even if it will be fed tofu in the morning"
HAS anyone heard that the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA has a TANK that is ELECTRIC. To all gearheads I used to drive a 68 GTO. 20yrs later and gas prices soring. Bush says americans are addicted to oil. We need this tecnology so maybe we can slow down our consumption. I dont need to race another car, I just want to go to work for god sake and not pay 4.50 a gallon a gas, but guess what that's goig to happen. What I want bushie is that tax break you gave to suv 100,000. for an electric car
The standard Ariel Atom BEAT the Ferrari... How is this a decent comparison? The Atom weighs under 1000lbs while the Ferrari is over 3000 lbs! Hardly fair! Besides the Original Atom with the supercharged K20 Honda motor did 0-60 under 3 seconds... HAS NO ONE EVER SEEN TOP GEAR?
No man, most of the viewers of this are the G-Wiz drivers, who really do believe they are saving the world by driving in a plastic cart with a full load of acid containers... just read the comments, petrol heads know what they are talking about in here, even though there are only a few of them... (and every petrol head knows that the future is in Hydrogen engines, not in this battery powered crap)
Hydrogen is no better than electric. It's far less efficient to produce, and uses just as much polluting materials in the manufacture of the engine and the hydrogen itself. It's also far more expensive.
Some of you guys are so backwards thinking..who cares what powers it. An "engine sound" can't get you to work every day, or win you a race on the track. Electric just makes way more sense. The motors are way more efficient. As soon as somebody figures out how to keep them powered cheaper and longer, there will be no point to drive a gas powered car. Look at gas prices..wouldn't you rather drive faster, for less money, less repairs, and less polution, who cares about less noise?!
GM already had a fully electric car, but there's a conspiracy to keep electrics off the market. This country, with it's free market should be about competition, but nobody mentions the fact that monopolies control what consumers will buy, eliminating any competitors.
You can always install external sound system to make gasoline car sounds, if you really miss it, actually the car can even look like a mussle car or a ferrari, this is just a prototype. Speed is the main thing, also i think when goint to work every day i don't want to listen to loud engine noise like 99% other people. Maybe they want to listen to music lol.
Honda aside, yes, it's an Ariel Atom that's been retrofitted with electric rather than gas. Altogether, not a bad platform to start with: Light but strong in all the right dimensions.
Cars made by two companies with hundreds of millions in R&D vs a garage project by one man. Yeah Electric is better.

Never be cheap? Think again. Oil companies and car companies needed heavy subsidies to get off the ground and become ubiquitous, electric and alternative energy cars will be no different.
ejones6286 2 years ago
But large company produced electric cars will never be cheap. This is what the public wants but the big players will gobble up the small players until the new oil is all things electric.

Fucking Porsche cheated and still loss. Porsche you fail.
Anothercoilgun 2 years ago
Wright didn't optimize it for performance, Ariel did.
This isn't a real test. It's like trying to prove a 4 cylinder engine is better than an 8 by racing a Hayabusa and a Mustang. A bike may be quicker, but we're not all riding bikes. People want doors and windows and roofs.
Also, those aren't designed to be drag cars. Put that electric around a track and see what the weight of the batteries do to the handling. I'd be willing to bet that both the gas engines are quicker around a track.
AllenBomber 2 years ago
but it still beat them on a straight, with cheaper technology. i dont thnik they are concerned with racing, probly more with on the road.
dustynapalm 2 years ago
Who said it's cheaper technology? You know how much the battery pack to run that is? AND that battery doesn't last forever. It'd be like having to replace the engine in your car every 5 years. If they aren't concerned with racing, then why are they showcasing their car with a race?
AllenBomber 2 years ago
proof of concept and so what if you have to replace batteries every 10 years using lead acid batteries. fact is your spending next to nothing on fuel there is nothign to service but the windscreen wiper fluid and check the pressure on the tyres. An interesting fact is that generally for every dollar of petrol you put in a car you should put a dollar away for servicing and maintenance on that car. With EV
There are Conventional brakes oil filters air filters fuel filters radiators diff fluids etc
Bradtomshore 2 years ago
maintance does not come anywhere near the price of fuel, tires is 2nd, and then lubrication...
this still needs tires, electricity is not free, or non polluting. and comparing this with your average car that weighs 3 times more is unfair.
compare its efficiency, range and speed against the gasoline base model atom and see how it works out
mageac 2 years ago
tyres and lubrication are included in maintenance. and yes petrol costs a lot more than electricity. do you really think well be burning coal for the rest of our lives? if you do your completely miss informed on the current state of renewable energies. There are enough renewable energy sources out there to power the world for millions of years.
research this yourself
so maybe you should start looking towards the future instead of living in the past. u was a mechanic i know how much it costs.
Bradtomshore 2 years ago
the point i was making is that its unfair to compare this to your average car, its light, stripped down, basic etc...
compare it tho the base atom, which is pretty much the identical car, but with a small I4
and do you think electricity will be cheap forever?... once everyone uses it, the utility companies will just jack the prices up...
mageac 2 years ago
of course they will jack up the prices, even if we end up in the same situation for price... we wont be searching the dregs of this world sending in our armies and seizing oil supplies to run these petrol / diesel cars. once the demand is gone there wont be need for for people to be exploited for oil.
also keep in mind the amount of carcinogens that are also produced from burning dirty fuels its not just CO2 they put out but more harmful things that are toxins.
Its a small price to pay really.
Bradtomshore 2 years ago
there literally was always war/fighting, and there will always be war, no matter what someone will find a reason to want to fight with someone else.
used to be land, then civil rights, then oil... soon could be water, air, tomatoes who knows...
the carcinogens are negligible, especially when some factories are burning old tires....
sometimes the world makes me go cross eyed...
all this cracking down on pollution... yet letting some companies burn freakin tires...
mageac 2 years ago
yeah well companies are part of the problem, war/fighting will always be there while there are armies to fight them and politicians who dont know how to solve problems. all it is is empire building and alot of wars make alot of people money, weather its plundering the new land for resources or gun sales. Most wars are a way of expanding the power/wealth of one country. sure dioxin is stupid but thats the way our society is raised.. cyclical consumption.. thats our one goal in life. we consume
Bradtomshore 2 years ago
also you should research a little bit into what happens to waste oil from the stuff you lubricate your engine with. air tomatoes and water are not scarce. although im sure tomatoes will become scarce when we run out of fertilizers.
Bradtomshore 2 years ago
actually we burn waste oil at our shop... sounds bad but its a pretty clean system and provides heat for the shop.
the emissions are supposed to be comparable to your standard oil furnace

A lot of ignorance here. The car is a proof of concept, nothing more. He has proved that a gas car cant match the performance of an electric car. There was no point in designing a whole new car to prove a point, hence modifying an Atom.

And if anyone cares, it blue now, and it looks ever better.
EvanFSB 3 years ago
interesting. I thought the electric parts were made by ACpropulsion. if he made it himself which motor, controller and batteries are in it?
DanFrederiksen 2 years ago
after "FAKE!" you just stated the obvious. a wrightspeed x1 is an ariel atom with an electric engine, just like an acura nsx is a honda nsx with an acura badge
lORDELO2 2 years ago
honda = acura same company.
Pyr01 2 years ago
yeah well maybe i didn't pick the best analogy there but my point was that it's stupid to bitch about wrightspeed x1 being fake by saying it's an ariel atom with an electric engine. just as stupid as saying an acura nsx is fake cuz it's a honda nsx with an acura badge. btw acura < honda, not = honda, it's honda's, honda created acura, but acura doesn't = honda
lORDELO2 2 years ago
well at least you get what i mean by Honda = Acura. If i get a car say a Ford and stick an electric engine in it, can i go around claiming it to be my invention?
Pyr01 2 years ago
of course you can, in that scenario you got a Ford an stuck an electric engine in it, it's your "invention", it's your doing. not that ford hasn't done it with it's own cars but then the question isn't "whose idea was it" anymore, it's "which one is best, your invention (a random Ford with an electric engine you stuck in it) or Ford's own electric cars?". besides this wrightspeed could kick an ariel atom 3's ass
lORDELO2 2 years ago
And you should also know that the original Ariel Atom does use a Honda engine to drive it. go watch the TopGear video of the Ariel.

chevelleinc12 3 years ago 2
Doesn't have to be heavy to generate this much power as do the others. Most don't realize that electric engines don't have the same mech limits. That Ferrari has max HP at certain RPMs - has to build to it. Electric engines have constant torque at all times.

honestly, every time I see videos like these, they're all so convincing! I see no consequences for electric cars except for the potentially sudden impact in the economy. One of the elementary things I learned in Econ class is it's close ties with ecology (i.e. electric cars)
Watched "Who Killed the Electric Car?" I am a believer lol
kamikrazi123 3 years ago
Something else they teach you in Econ: people go where the money goes. If you're in the auto industry and you don't move towards non-petroleum power, you lose. The petroleum powered industry will die because a new one will take its place, and capital, labor and consumers will move in the same direction. There will be no sudden impact on the economy because that kind of change can't take place overnight.

As an avid commuter cyclist I agree. But cycling isn't the answer for all. Parents with young kids and older people for instance. Also you must constantly battle the weather on a bicycle, not everyones cup of tea, and not always convenient.
TheWatcherInTheTower 3 years ago
Most of them are about "power" "speed" etc.(-_-)
Sorry...cars don't need to go super fast for any reason other than to build up your ego. Sustainably is far more important and always has been.
withindarkness 3 years ago
The other reason is because it is fun and challenging just the same as any other sport. There is a multi-billion dollar global industry built around motor racing which all boils down to the fact that people love to push the limits and enjoy the rush of speed and racing. Humans will always push the limits and going fast is one of the most rewarding ways to do that.

and where does electricity come from.....
caleb2438 3 years ago
nuclear power... =]
karlwolf2 3 years ago
Hopefully not. Inefficient, dirty(despite what the nuke companies say),dangerous, entirely dependent on oil anyway.
It takes over 20 years for a nuclear facility to achieve a total EROEI of '1'.
The US gov is still scrambling to find a safe place to store its waste. Previous plans have tanked due to ground water and fault-line concerns. Electricity won't do you any good if your whole watershed is radioactive.
withindarkness 3 years ago
Nuclear power is really the only option in the long term. Very efficient ( one kilogram of plutonium contains more energy than a trainload of coal ) and relatively clean. Coal fired powerplants leak more radioactivity into the surrounding area than nuclear facilities due to trace amounts of radioactive minerals in the coal. Sure, waste is a big issue. But with research into other cycles such as the thorium cycle, maybe a solution can be found there. There is a *lot* of energy bound up in matter.
TheWatcherInTheTower 3 years ago
How about scaling back use and using solar, etc. instead?
You're going to hit a wall eventually...I'm just hoping it happens while the world is still a nice place to live.
The real solution is to stop the Progress Trap we're all caught up in.
withindarkness 3 years ago
Not gonna happen any time soon. If you plot global energy consumption over history you will see that our energy requirements are increasing at an exponential rate that way outstrips even population growth. There is a physical limit to the Earths population, but I think energy usage will continue its climb well after the population has stabilised. More technology = more energy requirements. One man today can do with machines what used to be the work of hundreds. Imagine the future?
TheWatcherInTheTower 3 years ago
Solar etc, as you put cannot yet deliver the baseload demands of cities. It may be able to power moderate size towns, but the bulk of the power will still be needed to be generated in some other way. Unless, as you put it we "scale back". What would you have scale back to, exactly? Apart from a global catastrophe, there will be no voluntary "scaling back". What is this so-called "Progress Trap"?
TheWatcherInTheTower 3 years ago
Essentially, short term gains are thought of as good, even if in the long term they make things worse.
As for scaling back...I doubt its gonna happen (see above), but it is the only truly sustainable choice. How much? As much as is necessary.
I don't believe technological increase is "progress". Progress towards what? When looking at history and technology, I ask only one question: Does it make people happier? If it does not, it is useless. Are people happier now than in the past? Doubtful.
withindarkness 3 years ago
If we kept 'progressing', increasing population, building intensive farming, energy production, etc. we could eventually remove the ability of the planet to sustain us without our artifice, or at least make it a terrible place to be.
Should something go wrong in a world at it's maximum, we'd be screwed. If something went wrong 200 years ago...no biggy. Now? Some problems, but we'd recover easily.
We make the consequences of failure and catastrophe worse each time we "find a solution".
withindarkness 3 years ago
How would you like to measure happiness?
Longevity? Nutrition? Productivity?
All three are at the highest levels in human history. Average life expectancy, at least in the "west" has more than doubled in the last century. While it's impossible to say whether the dead are happy, at least a few of the living might be, so happiness is definitely on to up! ;-)
What time in the "good old days" would you like to return to exactly?
TheWatcherInTheTower 3 years ago
Not "return to the good old days". Find a truly sustainable way of doing things. Maybe that means reducing technological levels.
Longevity has little to do with happiness...you never know when you might die anyway. Besides, it only recently that your statement is true. Tribes today have long lives, and bodies found in Celtic and Norse burials were, on average, longer lived than us. Lifespan dropped during the dark ages, and through the industrial revolution...we have only just got it back.
withindarkness 3 years ago
It's like saying "gas prices are good now because they aren't as high as they were a week ago" You're still paying more than you were 3 years ago.
Nutrition is also something that dropped in quality before being brought back up.
Productivity is an industrial term. It means nothing in regard to happiness.
Humans can not increase their capacity for joy. A happy person 2000 years ago was just as content as a happy person today.
withindarkness 3 years ago
"A happy person 2000 years ago was just as content as a happy person today." There were only 200 million people alive back then. For simplicity lets assume about the same percentage were happy then as now. With 6 billion folks around today, we are therefore 2900% happier today. You might want to check for facts regarding longevity. Some rare individuals made it to what we could consider an old age, but the majority died very young. Remember there was no antibiotics or sanitation back then.
TheWatcherInTheTower 3 years ago

LFSvidMan 3 years ago
Hydrogen is no better than electric. It's far less efficient to produce, and uses just as much polluting materials in the manufacture of the engine and the hydrogen itself. It's also far more expensive.
Oil/coal/solar/etc--> electricity-->hydrogen-->engine
or
Oil-->gas-->hydrogen-->engine
vs
Oil/coal/solar/etc-->electricity-->engine
Hydrogen isn't fuel...its an inefficient storage system.

Bigbeats23 3 years ago 3
GM already had a fully electric car, but there's a conspiracy to keep electrics off the market. This country, with it's free market should be about competition, but nobody mentions the fact that monopolies control what consumers will buy, eliminating any competitors.
