Mikey has an excellent point, Addictive Drums is pro quality. If you're considering a module or 'brain'... stop right there. I considered Roland, of course, but found the module sounds (even the TD-12) just lacked the depth and nuance of a real sounding drums. However, with Roland pads & cymbals for triggering, coupled with Addictive Drums with a host program, a laptop with ASIO4All v2, I could not be more pleased, and I haven't spent a huge fortune to make it happen.
I've seen Mason VPT's drum cover videos and I was wondering how do I plug in an Ipod to a RET drumkit, connected to an Alesis Trigger IO, using Addictive Drums software, so that i can play to songs, just like Mason does?
Superstitious By Stevie Wonder... and the best renaming they could come up with was "Funky Pants"? Why not just change the spelling - "Supastishus" or "Wonderlicious" - funky pants sounds like you haven't changed your shorts for a week. ;-)
@amyodov Yeah I was. Is that song a play-along track, much like the Roland V-Drums practice song bank or just a background example track for the video itself? It was just a joke anyway, wasn't important.
After a week of study, I went for Superior Drummer 2 with a PCI ESI Juli@ card audio interface. Should sound pretty sweet, nicer than Addictive in my opinion.
@Raindarsus Me too. One issue I've had with this plugin is the almost uncontrollable amount of compression. I have to heavily edit a preset into my own sound to avoid all the limiting.
hello ..i use my Td 9 roland EM for play addictive via midi on firepod presonus to macbook...but i can play the choke on the cynbal...can u help me? tnx Dan
Hi there Mikey VPT. PottersDrummer here from the UK. I have played acoustic for years but recently have purchased an Alesis DM 10 Pro kit which is great for practice and recording etc. I want now to use Addictive drums from my laptop. This is all new to me and need help with which link software IE. Reaper etc and what connections to use. Can anyone help?
This video shows the major strengths and weaknesses of AD. The actual drums sound great, but when you get to the cymbals (especially the hi-hat) you run in to some real accenting problems.
Man I really like your videos, and your drumming too. I use AD for making drum tracks for my songs.
I wanted to ask you is it possible to get that big snare sound from the 80s just within the AD. I've been trying and trying and I just can't nail it. Please help me.
your kit sounds super natural compared to everyone else's. has it got to do with software or does hardware play a factor as well? we recorded our EP with a roland electronic kit and real cymbals. seems like you're using real cymbals here too? but i can see a trigger underneath the "ride".
@drgonz1 I bet the cymbals on the motown sets are great. I originally switched over from acoustic because I hate the way new cymbals sound. I have a high end Yamaha in cases with no cymbals. Pro Tools is coming any day. AD is sitting here waiting.
@RikJamezBich they are awesome! With the eq, pitch and distorsion u can tweak them any way u want! But they are good out of the box aswell! What blew me away the most were the claps that they sampled. U never get the same clap sound twice, sounds so real. But I can't remember if they came with the retro or funk adpak ,both are worth it though!
I use AD wtih my live drums through a Roland SPD-S.
@drgonz1 I'm beginning to think either we are lucky to know about and be able to use Addictive Drums, or some people are ignorant to the thought that technology is beating acoustic sounds on drums. Of course the irony being for the love of acoustic sounds. If they made drums like they did in the 60's 70's, I might not be this way.
Having a lot of trouble finding a drum map for my Yamaha dtxplorer. Im using cubase and addictive drums ver 1.0. Is there anyone who can email me a drum map as a drm file please?? keanerjoe@hotmail.com Thanks!! =D
Great stuff Mikey!! Having a lot of trouble finding a drum map for my Yamaha dtxplorer. Im using cubase and addictive drums ver 1.0. Is there anyone who can email me a drum map as a drm file please?? keanerjoe@hotmail.com Thanks!! =D
what electronic drums would you recommend if i'm going to use it via a computer with plugins like AD? will it get cheaper if i'm not looking for a great module but great pads?
wow with these brilliant sounds and that amazing looking electronic drum kit I don't think a live audience would have any clue that the drums weren't acoustic!
I have the Yamaha DTXtreme III with Addictive drums.
It's connected via USB to my Macbook Pro with Logic.
I can record and it all sounds great but one question... how do you get the cymbals to choke?
The set has Aftertouch and I see it in Addictive Drums and it's checked but still no go. The only way I come close is to map part of the cymbal as a choke but then I have to hit the cymbal twice to get it to choke and I really don't like it that way.
sounds like your hi hat sensitivity is set too high all your hi hat hits are too similiar... needs morevariation between the hits... more or less openess... not exactly the same every time.... sometimes if the sensitivity is triggering too hi you get that machine gun type duplication like in this video
wow this is great stuff... this is what i have been looking for... i have a question though. will ocean way drums work on these kits and the alesis io??? that would be off the change... ocean way has the best drum software...
no i dont think so. the io is not a module its just a data transfer port. the drum sounds are in ur software and the io allows your drums triggers and drum software to comunicate. if you use a set up which involves a computer then you must do ur research and find out about compatability and so on. you must address latency issues by reading up carefully on the specs of both trigger, io and ur computer. as far as i know addictive or superior have no latency problems, i may be wrong tho.
Im new to e-drumming and i actually got a alesis usb pro kit to get started and i wanted to upgrade to the RET kit already lol because the pads are just way too small. But before i could even attempt to do that i need to get Addictive drums to work with my alesis trigger io. For some reason they dont have my module to select from. And you recommending this software with the alesis trigger io inspired me to buy Addictive drums. Can you help me out?
if you buy some midi triggers you can... but real e-drums have zones that will play different sounds for rimshots etc.. so really if you want to trigger and get the best results you should by an e-drum kit.
get a set of ddrum pro accoustic triggers, clip them on to your kit, plug the ends of the trigger leads into an alesis IO then plug the IO into your computer. as for cymbals, either record them normally and then mix that in with ur triggered drum sounds or failing that u will have to get some ekit cymbals, roland do a really nice set, rubber coated metal discs. there are no triggers available that clip onto real cymbals.
Hi, man ! I've listened to your video (I've said listened, not heared, big difference) and I can say that I've immediatly taken a guitar to "play with you". 5* without hesitations ! It's a pity that this world is so big, cause I would have liked to play really with you playing Drums, you got the groove that I like...And when you put a record, it's one of my top 5 best artists, Stevie Wonder. Thanks for the invitation, and hope I'll read you soon. BYE !
These are all samples! Sampled from real actual drums! They were played at every different velocity so it would react and sound like a real drum. It's not a cheap sound that just changes in volume :-)
Awesome thanks for the reply :P, i have a Cheap Session pro dd506, Mainly for recording using AD for my band, Works pretty well, whats better do you know, AD or EZdrummer?
Haven't worked with the new C&V but want to! Also, Jazz is great! I've tried SSD and it sounds good! Not so easy if you're not used to Kontact Players... same for Ocean Way. All the samples sound good, though!
hey is there any way i can download the 90's rock preset from the internet? i think i deleted some original presets in my AD, but i realy love that 90's rock preset
hey mikey....i know you probably feel the same way...but i think AD gives you a WHOLE lot better real time feel than SD....maybe it's because it uses less system resources and maybe their compression is a lot better than toontrack's....you and I seems to groove a lot better than SD...more real time feeling...and plus...you can play the AD samples in 96Khz bringing the latency down even further...you can't do that with SD...only plays on 44.1Khz....AD sounds better too on 96Khz...have you tried?
Mikey, thanks for taking the time to post this video. I am trying to decide which drum software might be best for me. I am looking for a good funk/soul/RnB as well as Rock sounds. I like what I have heard so far with the demo. I had a question though. Are there many options for funk type kits? I tried the Funky Pants preset which sounds awesome on the video but the snare was completely different when I tried it. Did you change anything before playing it or is it maybe just the demo I got?
Sorry, comment was too long. I also saw the FunkMasters expansion for EZDrummer as well which I thought might be good. Have you tried that at all? The only thing with that is I would either have to buy EZDrummer or Superior first. Thanks again for taking the time to post the video and for any help you can give.
There are tons of presets in AD which I love. I will say that FunkMasters is pretty nice, too. All of the Toontrack software is very developed and deep. I think either way you go, you get really great software.
Have you checked out my site? VirtualPercussionOutlet(.com) if you're interested!
Alright cool. i was wondering cause i've been having some velocity issues. for example i would hit the drum normally and it would play at max velocity.
Nice video - great quality! Those Addictive Drums sound great!! Your drumming in this video is great!!
Maybe I should have checked more into AD-I've now got OWD (Ocean Way Drums Silver) - it sounds fantastic however, can't get the VH-11 Hi-Hat to cooperate at all.
PS: I'm not used to you without your hat either :)
That sounds okay. I will say that I've used the dd-65, but it didn't seem to track that well with ezdrummer. I bought an RET snare at first, and it feels awesome, and tracks super nice.
Man, I'm really considering these drums as a next upgrade in the future since I already have the Trigger I/O
I already have an Alesis USB kit with the Trigger I/O. I can't seem to get variable hi-hat sounds with AD, just completely open and completely closed. Is this the case with your hi-hat pedal as well for AD?
The USB kits are neat... but they are Nothing like the real thing. The RET kits are built like tanks and they look and feel beautiful too!
AD has an upgrade or two that may contain variable hi hat, but the original version does not have the in-betweens you're looking for with the Trigger Io.
nice drumming there mike. although i must say im not used to you without your hat :) anyways nice sounds and playing as usual. superstition is such a monster tune \m/.
I loved playing over Superstition. I probably jammed on it for hours while taping the whole thing! It's an awesome one to explore some different ideas, for sure.
interesting to see that you went back to Addictive Drums. i still like the sounds from that software, though...might have to dust it off and use it some again
I've had AD for a while now, but never had time to do a video. I just can't get over how well it triggers compared to other software titles. It's a beautiful thing!
Hey, i have a question, i have a MacBook pro 1.1, 15", Intel core duo, do you think i can run a similar rig with my lap top..?!?

Good question! You play E-Drums?

tq for the replies. So u mean i can connect 2 IOs same time? Is it by connecting both usbs to my laptop? If its that way, cool!
bhmr5711 2 years ago
Hi, Mikey
I enjoy your videos! Hoping you will do a review of Toontrack's Custom and Vintage (and the Jazz one ... did you do that yet?)
I was wondering if you have tried Steven Slate Drums, and how it stacks up against the higher-end ones you have mentioned
Thanks! Also Ocean Way drums ... have you tried them?

Thanks!

I love the 90's Rock Kit preset... awesome! 5*

hey mikey....i know you probably feel the same way...but i think AD gives you a WHOLE lot better real time feel than SD....maybe it's because it uses less system resources and maybe their compression is a lot better than toontrack's....you and I seems to groove a lot better than SD...more real time feeling...and plus...you can play the AD samples in 96Khz bringing the latency down even further...you can't do that with SD...only plays on 44.1Khz....AD sounds better too on 96Khz...have you tried?

Mikey, thanks for taking the time to post this video. I am trying to decide which drum software might be best for me. I am looking for a good funk/soul/RnB as well as Rock sounds. I like what I have heard so far with the demo. I had a question though. Are there many options for funk type kits? I tried the Funky Pants preset which sounds awesome on the video but the snare was completely different when I tried it. Did you change anything before playing it or is it maybe just the demo I got?
DJMannas 2 years ago
Sorry, comment was too long. I also saw the FunkMasters expansion for EZDrummer as well which I thought might be good. Have you tried that at all? The only thing with that is I would either have to buy EZDrummer or Superior first. Thanks again for taking the time to post the video and for any help you can give.
DJMannas 2 years ago
There are tons of presets in AD which I love. I will say that FunkMasters is pretty nice, too. All of the Toontrack software is very developed and deep. I think either way you go, you get really great software.
Have you checked out my site? VirtualPercussionOutlet(.com) if you're interested!
Thanks for the questions, I hope I've helped!
And I probably DID change my snare ;-)

Hey man,
I want to start drumming with electronic drums but I don't really know how much a beginners set costs. How much did you pay for this one?

This is the Stealth Pro kit from RET Percussion. It sells for 2,495 USD on the Virtual Percussion Outlet website.
It's a VERY nice kit comparable to the Roland TD-9SX professional kit.
Check it out!!!

PS - there is also the Stealth LE kit for 1,995 USD.

what do you use as far as the velocity curve on the alesis trigger i/o for AD and SD2.0?
gmanjones312 2 years ago
I tend to like the LG1 or LG2, or even the SP1 or SP2. I also like LIN!
It depends, really.

Alright cool. i was wondering cause i've been having some velocity issues. for example i would hit the drum normally and it would play at max velocity.
thanks i will play around with that though
gmanjones312 2 years ago
you gotta set your gain down and play with different velocity settings

Does it have preprogramed patterns? if you don't play drums?
LaiYouttitham 2 years ago
You can get 1,000's of MIDI fills, beats, and grooves. You don't have to be an e-drummer to get great sounds!
Thanks for the questions!

Hey Mikey!!
Take care Mikey,

What is your opinion of this combo?:
yamaha dd-65 e-drum, addictive drum and cubase.
Thank you.
TRES70 2 years ago
That sounds okay. I will say that I've used the dd-65, but it didn't seem to track that well with ezdrummer. I bought an RET snare at first, and it feels awesome, and tracks super nice.
WillHunt314 2 years ago
Man, I'm really considering these drums as a next upgrade in the future since I already have the Trigger I/O
I already have an Alesis USB kit with the Trigger I/O. I can't seem to get variable hi-hat sounds with AD, just completely open and completely closed. Is this the case with your hi-hat pedal as well for AD?
shadow1565 2 years ago
The USB kits are neat... but they are Nothing like the real thing. The RET kits are built like tanks and they look and feel beautiful too!
AD has an upgrade or two that may contain variable hi hat, but the original version does not have the in-betweens you're looking for with the Trigger Io.
The software kicks butt!

your best vid yet, Mikey...nice job
interesting to see that you went back to Addictive Drums. i still like the sounds from that software, though...might have to dust it off and use it some again
ChrisBakerDrummer 2 years ago
Thanks, Chris. That means a lot coming from you.
I've had AD for a while now, but never had time to do a video. I just can't get over how well it triggers compared to other software titles. It's a beautiful thing!
