THANK YOU for this video. EVERY video on "professional" sports sites/channels that is about buzzer beaters always puts Christian Laettner #1 but Lorenzo Charles should always be #1 forever in college buzzer beaters. It won the freaking title!
Best college buzzer beater I ever saw isn't hear but that is very excusable. It wasn't an NCAA tourney game. It was a Big 10 quarterfinal in 2008 when Blake Hoffharber hit a shot at the gun to beat Indiana 59-58. Minnesota had to go full court catch the pass and get the shot off in less than 2 seconds. But if you ever watch that replay in slow speed you see the shot is off in time.
Sometimes the reaction makes it even better. Bryce Drew hitting that three (I went to Valpo that year) was fantastic. Then the dive on the floor. As much as I dislike Duke, that Laettner shot was made even better after Hill's very real reaction of disbelief. U could see it in his face, just shock, tears ... Unreal play. Smart's is one of the first I remember watching as a small kid. And Edney's I remember just thinking "Damn, that dude has stones. He just said give me the rock and I'ma score."
Great, great video! Brings back great memories, PLUS it reinforces my belief that March Madness is the greatest two weeks of the year in sports, especially the first weekend.
on the last clip of the NC state game, how was there not one second left on the clock since when he made the shot there is still 2 seconds left and you can see hakeem is is calling for a time out with one second left. Why didnt the refs put one or two seconds left on the clock and then houston gets the ball out of bounds? Anyone know?
@flyguyry1 -usually there is a 1 second lapse for human element and in 1983 clock did not stop after a made basket inside the final minute of the game
2 the bitch ass KU fans the reason y he didn't have that mario chalmers shot was 1 it didn't win the game it jus tied it n 2 it really wasnt a special shot all these shots were very difficult like fallaways n turnarounds. Mario Chalmers came off a screen n pulled a deep 3 thats it.
How did Tate George turn around and get that shot off in just 1 second unbelieveable. I'm glad someone finally sees that Lorenzo Charles's buzzer beater was better than Lattener's. It won NC State the title. Bryce Drew is the most memorable to me for some reason. The Northwestern State one was a prayer too. I watched that game as it happened and remember it very well.

@driver8train ok. it was a buzzer beater. if he hadnt made it ku woulda lost. nothing in here says they had to be game winners. and pretty much it was a game winner
@ks7800 lol..hardly..it was nice shot, but it wasn't to win..just tied the game and sent to ot..if one was making a top game tying shots list i would put it up there near the top..
This is a pretty good list. Absolutely agree with you on #1 and #2. Valvano was the life of that tournament, and that buzzer beater decided the champions. Laettner shot is a very close second but Valvano-NCState is definitely the first. Thanks for posting this.
Is it just me or was the NCAA until about the late 90's REALLY terrible at stopping the clock when there was still time left after a shot goes down with like 2 seconds left...???? Houston should have had 1 second left in the 1983 title game and Oklahoma should have had one second left after Rick Fox made that shot...bogus really
Illinois needed that national title a lot more than UNC did. That 04-05 Illini team was a team for the ages, and Illinios will likely never sniff an opportunity like that season again. UNC with Roy Williams at the helm will just reload every two years and win titles every 3-10 years. (sour grapes, I know)
Some time back a higher resolution version of #7 was on YouTube, & I spent a couple of hours examining George's release. You cannot see whether his hand was on the ball at 00:0; some have complained it was. However, I finally noticed that at 00:1 a spot of light appears on the ball that wasn't there a fraction of a second before. This could only be the ball *starting to spin*, & reflecting arena light because of this; thus the ball was not still touching his hand! 'Best last second shot ever!
@maroon45 to tie?????? over which one of these game WINNING shots? chalmers shot was nice, but it was a totally uncontested standard square up three point shot with plenty of time on the clock

The Laetner shot shoulda been #1 for the simple fact that was in my (and many others) opinion the greatest Tournament Game EVER played...
So much emotion in that game...Was elated for Duke and heartbroken for Kentucky..If ever a team that lost can hang their heads high it was UK after that game...

Surprised you didn't put Eric Maynor's shot in there to beat Duke a few years ago. You being an UNC fan I thought a winner over Duke would be maybe in the 12-15 range.
hey i also applaud u to put the last two buzzer beaters from duke and nc. state. wow. and being a nc fan to . congrads. and if that dont get u ready for march madness, then i have no idea what will.
That "Holy Mackerel" shot by Forrest was amazing in how perfect it was - was on line the entire way and swished through dead-center. Was so pure it almost turned the net inside out. Also think that was the guy's only three-point shot of the entire season.
Laettner's shot is easily the best. For one his team was down and it was a set play and not just the NC State "Heave one and see what happens" deal with Charles. I think the Murray St. win from last year should also be on the list.
@Cabbageboy316 Charles play was the best because that play happened. Laettners shot it was UK's poor defense on an inbound. Charles muscled his way in there to jump for that ball and i agree that Charles holds the top buzzer beater trophy.
I dunno. I suppose the NC State play did win a national title whereas Laettner's simply got Duke to the FF. But let's not kid ourselves here. Duke/UK in 1992 was like the Rembrandt or Picasso of hoops. NC St. vs. Houston in 1983 was a horrible game aside from that play, full of nothing but NC St. playing stall ball and Houston missing nearly every FT. It was a crappy game with a wild finish, whereas Duke/UK was an epic classic with an all time finish.
I thought you might have both of Laettner's buzzer beaters. He hit the winner at the buzzer against UCONN to make the Final Four when he was a sophomore. Ironically, it was the game right after Tate George's buzzer beater to beat Clemson.
Putting Bryce Drew's Buzzer Beater at #3 isn't bad, though I think it should be the top choice. Valpo was a HUGE underdog going in, and proceeded to knock out Ole Miss and Florida State before losing to Rhode Island in the Sweet Sixteen.
Anytime Valparaiso University is mentioned, Bryce Drew's buzzer beater comes up. That was a sick shot.
@CBAbgky I agree. I was watching that game at my job and I work at a library. And when Ty Rogers hit that shot, I screamed!. I nearly lost my job for that. But that was an awesome game and terrific shot.
When did I say I was worrying or worried? I only made 2 comments, not 50 and I never said the word worried or worrying or mad or POed or any of that in those 2 sentences.
@dxdude2004 Read my fucking post again you dumb fuck. That's not the title of the video. The title of the video deals with buzzer beaters. Learn to fucking read.

Keith Smart should be top 5, no way that should be 11, it won the national championship. US Reed's should also be like 7th or 6th too.

I think 1 and 2 should be switched!

CBAbgky 1 year ago
@CBAbgky I agree. I was watching that game at my job and I work at a library. And when Ty Rogers hit that shot, I screamed!. I nearly lost my job for that. But that was an awesome game and terrific shot.

When did I say I was worrying or worried? I only made 2 comments, not 50 and I never said the word worried or worrying or mad or POed or any of that in those 2 sentences.

Joke of a list without Mario Chalmers' three to tie the National Championship. The title is "Buzzer Beaters" not game "Game Winning Shots".
frankmartinisadouche 1 year ago
@frankmartinisadouche that shot didn't win the game
dxdude2004 1 year ago
@dxdude2004 Read my fucking post again you dumb fuck. That's not the title of the video. The title of the video deals with buzzer beaters. Learn to fucking read.
frankmartinisadouche 1 year ago
@frankmartinisadouche YOU LEARN TO READ!!!
"yeah, mec3636 has it right. These are only game winners, sorry. It was an incredible shot, though, best championship game I've seen."
the video uploader's EXACT words!!! "THESE ARE ONLY GAME WINNERS"
dxdude2004 1 year ago
@dxdude2004 What's the title say, dumb fuck?

the 3 pointers should be before the 2 pointers theyre more dramatic

At #12, that game was raining 3's that night. West Virginia had PIttsnogle and Gansey who were almost automatic at times.
