  • I've paid £1.49 for this.

  • I'd give this movie a D. It was visually interesting for about 20 minutes then it was just more purple than I could take! Seriously, the 3D just doesn't do much for me and the story I thought should win some sort of "most derivative script" award. Wasn't this movie better when it was Pocahontas? Or Dances with Wolves? The dialogue was horrible, as Dad rightly points out, and absolutely leaden with political correctness. Disagree with Gab about S.Weaver and the other actress. Both were boring. :)

  • has cameron included the deleted scenes as well???Or is he planning to include it in future?

  • @Ronnie11789 The DVD has NOTHING extra! The theatrical re-release in August is suppossed to be an extended cut, and then the next DVD release (Xmas) will probably include deleted scenes.

  • @GabnDad Ahh disappointed...thanks a lot though

  • Neither mentioned the extreme stiffness the botox gave Sirgourneys character.!!!!

  • yeah it sucks i bought it yesterday and i really havent seen it yet for id otn have time but i was like "no features??" loads of things to tell about the making of this movie to the trash!! but well the movie looks great in quality so i hope its ok

  • Screw dvd. I made many people switch to blu-ray. I was one of the strong BD supporters during the format war. Always remember that Betamax reappears in disguise.

  • But the excuse of freeing up disc space to maintain visuals holds absolutlely no water, especially when you consider that "The Last Samurai" came as a 2 disc edition. If there was ever a movie that was fit to fully utilise a second disc for special features, it's Avatar.

The last movie that I feel really delivered in the "special features" area was Spider-Man 2, that disc really took you in depth behind the scenes of the whole movie making experience. This makes me want my 15 pounds back.

  • I GOT THE DVD NO 3D NO SPECIAL FEATURESS!!! i got sad but i can't wait for the NOVEMBER RELEASE ONE! XD

  • The movie is not about cowboys and indians.

It is about the crisis facing the human species on earth today.

The mortal danger that capitalism is to our civilisation.

  • The movie is definitely AWSOME, but is it worth to buy?, ..... let me say 1st, Im a movie buff, my DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-ray collection goes above 900 movies.

Cannot understand WHY?????? the Blu-ray version does not include "behind the scenes" section a movie of this technological category, its just plain stupid, ... so I say no, it's not worth buying, just rent it, ... hope soon, either a 3D version for home or a version with all the extras come out.

  • Im really dissapointed about the dvd. I mean NO SPECIAL FEATURES??????? REALLY?????????? Its such an awsum movie and it has no dvd features????

  • @mryoshifreak I know. They said they need the extra space on the DVD to make sure the visuals are as high-end as possible. More likely they're just trying to milk two purchases out of people - one on "Earth Day", and then one for the extras-packed edition out in November. Plus it's being rereleased to theatres in August, so... LOL

  • @GabnDad well thatll be nice. but i dont plan to buy it again. im just glad to have it already. however i might rent the relrelease just for the special features.

  • This movie somewhat resembles what happened in America with the native population and how we lost in the battle of little bighorn ect.

  • Exellent movie and this young woman is extra fine but whos this dad charicter sounds like an idiot the story was the best but the Dad says other wise. Hey clown you need to replenish the earth with like lovely women but what G. W. Bush did was under handed not any thing James C did. James C is a saint for illuminating the eyes of The American children. Train up a child in the way that he shall go and he will not depart for it.

  • I went to go see this with my mom. The scene that had are eyes opened up nice and wide was After Neytiri through that torch in the puddle and when the light faded the glow from the plant life all around them started to come out. It was just too beautiful and my mom kept saying omg look at that, that's so cool. Personally I love movies with excellent visual effects. 2012 and Avatar were both on my list of movies to watch last year. Avatar did it's job for me by being an amazing film.

  • Excellent review, really enjoyed this one!

  • @runecheater21 :( :(

  • @runecheater21 keep your rude remarks to yourself!

  • You know nothing about their lives dumbass. You don't even know them once again you dumbass. Everyone has their hobbies and obviously these two like movies and also like to review them. You're the one who has no life insulting strangers on youtube with a third time said you dumbass.

  • (great review!!!) youre completely right about the story but you've got to consider that this is also a bussines; if things had gotten too complicated it would have reduced its audience, and this is an over $300 million movie; it needs to have broad appeal

and when you compare it too other over $200M travesties like GI Joe or the Transformers 2 released 2009, Avatar is just on another level

Zoe Saldana was amazing; i think this is the first complete CG character to give real human emotion

  • @ernievzla

i like what you said in your first paragraph.

  • Agree!

  • @ernievzla I thought Zoe was amazing too. I wish more people recognized that.

  • I like District 9 too, but don't forget not all those aliens were CG, they were make-up and puppets. Plus they didn't have mouths, and they were darker, not light blue.. I still think Avatar is better, and I'm actually more moved by the Na'vi, that's just me... Ur not giving Avatar enough credit for it's acting and directing execution.

  • Yes, it's a story we heard before, but it's a story worth telling, and plus we never saw this story like this....

  • Actually UNOBTANIUM is a term created by scientists. Anything that they thought could fix all problems was called Onobtanium. It's actually not made up. Cameron was just being detailed of science history..

  • Nice review on Avatar... but for me, i will give Avatar an A grade and one of the best this year. When I watch movie, I don't dig things deeper. I ride with the film and later ask myself if I forgot time when I watched it. This movie completely swept me away. Yes the story is simple, but it doesn't mean the movie is less beautiful. It's how the maker translate the medium into silver screen, and James Cameron successfully did it! It shows in its box office result. A MUST SEE to every human.

  • I agree this is definitely THE film to just go for the ride - and what a ride! I picked it for my #3 Best of the Year, based on being swept away. ;)

  • the story was good at least it was not one of the story when going from human to alien at least it made sense and didnt go to point where ur like what and then u get it then dont kind of thing u know what i mean

  • I agree with your review!! The movie was visually stunning!!

The script so so!! The story so so!! A friend of mine gave a

response to the movie!! You have to dumb down sci-fi in

order to get the audience to understand!! Remember sci-fi

is the domain of nerds! It's a shame because there's so much could have been done to make this a masterpiece!!

It's visually stunning but you cannot give human characteristics to alien beings!!

  • This was a major bummer for me. Coming from my favorite director, I was expecting something of a higher calibre, though Cameron's bad is not as bad as Zombie's good.

  • great review.

    -Mead.

  • Maybe if the General army character has a better side (explaining how he has to wipe these people out in order for humans on Earth to survive...etc), this would have made the audience less convinced with the protagonist's plight. The "victory" wouldn't taste as well. They had to be biased.

  • DAD gave those grades - not me...! I think the story was just right, really. One can't help get transported by the visuals, first and foremost.

  • (sigh) Yet another "it must suck because it's beautiful" review of Avatar. She's stupid because she's gorgeous.....etc.

Nobody needs to see the movie in order to conclude the "Dances with the Wolves" parallel. It's pretty obvious from the trailer. But the way this -admittedly repeated story- was told in Avatar is beautiful.

OH... and even if it was a no brainer C-movie, the visuals alone carry it. This is not the case with Avatar, THIS WAS the most complete movie experience I've ever seen.

  • I didn't say that it's dumb because it looks good, just that the looks are the best thing going for it - there's a difference. And does that aspect elevate the quality of the movie overall? Definitely.

  • If I'm not wrong, you gave everything else (plot, storyline,...etc) a C or a B-.

I understand your point. The problem is, because the visuals were so in-your-face jaw dropping, people expect the story and plot to live up to the visuals, and there's no rule that says this should happen. Just because the visuals were groundbreaking, doesn't mean everything else should be. Actuallyt, contrary to "Dances with the wolves" u don't appreciate the contrast in both lives as Kevin is stuck in only one.

  • I'm going to have to disagree with most of your review Avatar was AMAZING

  • I think/hope I did express that I found it amazing in many ways - just not in every way!

  • i might have took your review the wrong way but to me it sounded like well the movie looks good but other then that it's mediocre at best or who knows maybe I'm just and Avatar fan boy lol

  • Great review! This is now my favorite film of all time! I can;t even say how much I loved it! Waitin on Avatar 2!

  • Good review. The visuals were great but this was definitely not the best movie of the year like a lot of reviewers are saying.

  • Better review then some others on youtube. As for the movie I agree with most of the stuff you say. I like the story because it reminded me of old Indian films. Same with the Navi people are like Native Indians.

  • Great review guys. Thanks

  • very nice guys, i agree absolutly, simple story, Preeeeetttty movie, gotta see it in 3D IMAX.

  • looking forward to the 2009 wrap up vids.

My review of Avatar on my channel is very similar to yours, but I think you both liked it a smidgen more than I did. Did you see it in 3D? I will see it once more in 3D to really let the visuals wash over me.

  • True the story is derivative and didnt particularly bring anything new to the table. it IS essentially Pocahontas of the future.

But i still was able to get lost in the story and feel for the characters, resulting in my huge satisfaction having seen it. i love it. I think in the end if a person is able to emotionally feel like as i did, it doesnt matter how unoriginal the plot it. it still rocks.

But of course, that is my opinion, and not all people are affected equally.

  • I would pretty much agree with you!

  • great review! thanks for introducing me to your channel, ill be lookin for more of your reviews!

  • Thanks for checking us out!

  • great review as usual!

Though i wont see this until the end of december, i still find one thing worth discussing. All the reviews say "watch it for the visuals, the story is weak". Now, i find that rather worrying, when even someone like James Cameron seems to forego story in favour of effects, and also so when its the only thing really pulling people to the cinema. Is it really that different from the 2012 disaster?

shouldnt we be more harsh on movies that sell us effects and not movies?

  • That's a good, interesting point. It's not that the Avatar story is terrible, just simple. Do fancy effects have to be met with an equally 'fancy' story - hard to say. I would hope there'd be heightened quality in all facets, but each film's equation is different.... For Avatar, I excuse a simpler plot because in a way it serves the rest of the material better; if that makes sense.

  • It does, and i follow your point. Likewise I'm not expecting die hard 5 or A-team to be deep and analysing the human soul, but just to blow stuff up and entertain.

However, its also James Cameron doing it, who has already proven he can do better. Though as said, wont see this until 30th december, quite likely that my worries will be put to shame -grin- Any sherlock holmes review coming up?

  • Sherlock Holmes review will be up this afternoon!

  • @GabnDad come on,admit it,you just fancied Worthingtons eh.?

  • @DarkTider It's not that Avatar's story is "weak" -- far from that, I found it interesting and beautifully told -- it's just not so original, it's been told multiple times in multiple ways. But when you watch this movie (especially in 3D), you won't be pointing out flaws, lol. It's a fabulous experience. And one I am looking forward to experience again.

  • great review

  • I totally agree with the visuals, I want to live in Pandora. The characters were solid and enjoyable. The story was basic which was a the weak point. I did care about the Navi as well. Another excellent review thanks for sharing.

  • I've been a James Cameron fan ever since The Terminator and Aliens. It's real great to see a new film from the guy. That's another movie I want to check out real soon. The moment I seen the trailer I knew it's going to be something special.

    The effects look great!

Awesome review as always, you guys! :-)

  • nice review

    well done

    I agree about the storyline

    this movie was just fantastic

  • Give us Max's review of the film. I think Dad's comment about District 9 costing $40million is very short sighted, as he's suggested the entire budget goes into character design/character effects. D9 didn't have a completely digital (and realistic) world, not to mention the difference in set pieces.

  • Good review...Thanks!

  • Ah brilliant review. I still want to see it again but my cinema has been fully booked all weekend so might have to catch it again next weekend before going to see Sherlock Holmes...but yes visually the film was well worth it :)

  • Stay tuned for our preview review of Sherlock Holmes, coming Tuesday!

  • ooooooooo cooool!

  • Great review Im with dad on this one all the way!

    Visually A+

    All other categories D-

  • nahh i wouldnt give it too much a D- ...more like a B- or C+ but not a D yea cliched story but come on nobody gave "The Last Samurai a D- for the story...

  • Great review guys. Your pictures in the background are always interesting to see haha. I agree about the story, but the rest of the film makes up for it. Absolutely fantastic movie. Stay cool guys.

  • Thanks Gab - had doubts after the trailers, but will toddle off to Imax downtown to see it in the week at some point :)

  • I absolutely agree with you two, for the most part. ESPECIALLY with Gab. While the story wasn't anything too original, it was executed beautifully, and that carried me through. I DID care about these blue people (though I loved my shrimp people even more) and their situation. The visuals pulled me in, but the well execute story held me. And did you two watch this movie in 3D? If not, I HIGHLY recommend it. WOW. I wanted to live in Pandora, lol. Wonderful movie. I absolutely loved it. :)

  • Great review as always. I agree completely. Worth seeing, but nothing new story-wise. Keep 'em coming!

  • Good review, an obvious question but did you see it in 3D?

  • Yep, IMAX 3D! Sweet!

  • @GabnDad no,imax aint widescreen,so crud.

  • contin: By the way if this movie isn't up for best director, best film, best visual effects, and best sound design then I'm never watching the Oscars again. It's totally deserving of every award that will hopefully come it's way.

  • I just came back from the IMAX viewing here in NY, and all I have to say is WOW. I now hang my head in shame for ever doubting James Cameron! This is a cinematic achievement and simply one of the greatest films ever made.

James Cameron promised to take the audience to a new world and did just that. As a matter of fact I'm going to take another trip to Pandora this Sunday, I think it's worth it ^_^.

  • HA! "Keep it short!" your Dad's awesome. I do understand what your saying about the story, however I appreciate similar or cliched stories when they are shown in an original way. Like Star Wars is basically a western. Good guys vs bad guys, it was just done in a very original way. I agree, Sam Worthington wasn't that great, but Zoe Saldana and Sigourney were great yes.
