In my opinion, the benefits of welfare are too great. One can feed themselves on $100 a month if they are careful about what they buy. Public housing can be truly public: public sleeping quarters, public bathrooms, no living space because these people should not have space to sit around, they should be out hoofing it looking for work. Make welfare benefits so measly, and just the bare minimum to survive, that only the laziest of people would chose it over working.

@StephanieLin Yeah I think its sad when someone working a full time job making minimum wage or a bit more lives in worse conditions than someone on welfare with numerous children. That was my reality for about a year, I was lucky to afford internet access and my cell phone. I only qualified for $10 a month in food stamps for 3 months, and I was not eligible for any other assistance because I had ZERO children. People wonder why welfare mom's have 5-10 children, they get awarded more money.

Yes, welfare is one of those programs that needs to be ELIMINATED, ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER GOVERNMENT SCAMS. I would start with all of the WOMEN who get pregnant on purpose to get on the government dole (and/ or to trap the man). That's right, you get pregnant it is on your own dime----no wic, welfare, food stamps, well baby care, medicaid or ANY OF THOSE GOVERNMENT GOODIES. And if you cannot take care of your kids, you lose custody. With my plan, watch the illegitimate births go very very low.

Lots of people grew up poor, dirt poor. That doesn't excuse a draconian government that makes it's poorest citizens scapegoats for a broken system. It's the system that needs an overhaul. I don't hate you for being poor, but living on welfare is hardly a luxury. It keeps people in a revolving door of poverty and contributes to crime. Most people wouldn't chose to be recipients. P.S. There's something wrong with a woman that has had 8 kids. She should have considered birth control at kid #3 or 4.

@micksauntie People stay in a revolving door of poverty by choice, it's that simple. When are people going to start holding other people responsible for their current situations? I lived in my car for 3 weeks before, and managed to take care of myself on a PT $6 an hour job for a year. The only assistance I had was $10 a MONTH in food stamps for 3 months. I eventually overcame all that. Everyone I have met who is on welfare has no desire to come off it. How many people do you know on welfare?

My God- you do??? I was under the impression that EVERYONE in the UK worked which all the jobs generates lots of cash to create economic prosperity for ALL citizens, regardless of race, creed, or color. For a while, I thought the reason why the British Pound was worth twice the U.S. Dollar is because the UK social-economic status was designed so all citizens get a wide range of programs of help should they really need it and business/ Gov't get great profits because of mass employment.

yes but the thing is they only have about 1,ooo,ooo unemployed cos they need that little amount cos unemoplyment creats jobs in the welfare system and these jobs count on people have no job its a catch 22 cos if the unemployment issuse was resolved then the people who worked in the welfare would now need jobs and it would all start again the welfare issue spreads to sickness aswellthough not just unemplyment

THE MILITARY is perfect for the POOR!! Thats what I have been thinking!! Right now the government is offereing 20,000$ sign on bonus and up to a potential 20,000$ more for college!! Bam that'll help with thier ignorance problem.. December 1st I leave for Iraq and guess what I get, I should come home with 30,000$ tax free. I am going to finish out one last semester before I go, PAID FOR BY THE NATIONAL GUARD.. Its awesome, I would have never gone to college any other way.

Yes, its an excellent alternative, will give dignity and pride to the people who serve, reward them and allow them to contribute to society if they are unable to (and are healthy enough to work). While help should be there for those who need it, it shouldn't be a free meal ticket for life for others who cheat and strain our resources on purpose. I don't agree for paying for someone's laziness and ignorance.

All welfare recipients are not lazy. In fact a lot of us need it. Not for drugs or alcohol, but to actually feed our children. And if you saw the average welfare check, you may not be so angry. It isn't even enough to cover rent, espcialy in California. More than 42 million Americans are unemployed right now. So Thank GOD that you still have one, and pray they don't lay you off any time soon.

i can understand the anger when i see someone in government housing with a brand new car in the driveway while im driving a 91 ranger, that barely runs and pay my taxes and pay into Social Security that wont be available when i need it.
