Congratulation. Three strikes is a lot less than it took me!
It's actually a lot easier than I made it look here.
The trick would be to get the charcloth closer to the sparks. These sparks have a low temperature and are small, so they cool down very quickly to below the ignition temperature of the cloth.
It's actually a lot easier to hold the rock steady and move the steel striker.
Anything made of carbon steel should work okay. The trick is getting the sparks to land on the tinder, and doing so while they're still hot enough to ignite it/
Iron pyrite in a form that won't just crumble when struck with a harder rock. FeS is quite common around here, but mostly in the from of small cubic crystals (fool's gold) embedded in a brittle substrate.
I'm home ill and had to stop watching your vids as the laughter causes me too much pain! Very much enjoy your unique style, it's both clever and funny.
very cool thanks you did a good job!! i dont care what they say !!! I will be practicing in low light so I can see what is going on with the friction spaks.
Good looks m8, that takes a lot of skill to do. I wouldn't have even thought of this method (nor the beer can either). I love the videos and will keep giving you the big thumbs up =)
I can appreciate how hard it is to make all this fire since I am a pyro myself. Compliments from me and the firebugs in my area
Your funny! Not realy patient it seems, but you sat there all day till it was dark to make fire... Or did you go inside because you got so impatient and come back out later? haha, still nice video
i think the myth that fire keeps animals away was started in the stone age from all the intense RAGEEEE screams from cavemen smashing their knuckles on rocks, i wouldnt go anywhere near a place where i heard screaming like that.
I'm still trying to find the right rocks. But the techniques is basically the same. Not so much rubbing the rocks together, but striking the one against the other. One hard rock, like flint or chert, and one with a high iron content, like pyrite.
You probably could. Generally the one object needs to be harder than the other, though. Feel free to post a video response if you've practiced a "steel on steel" technique. I'd be curious to see that.
You made me so nervous. Why didn't you use a larger rock?
Your videos are great! They are the first how-to videos that are informational and entertaining. I am watching your videos in numerical order, so I am not sure if you have made one like it, but I am hoping to find a video 100% as if you were thrown in the middle of the woods with nothing... how would you make a fire.... no man made anything. Most of the friction fires (hand drill, bow drill, fire saw, thong etc.) are easily possible with stone age tools. If you're in the right area to find pyrite and flint (or chert), and can find a decent spark-catcher, rocks also work.
Unfortunately, very few areas of the world are still true wilderness. Except for the poles, there's almost certainly going to be some man-made materials lying around.
Rob, your videos are great! I researsch on Physics teaching using video, I always say the good video doesn´t hide the mistakes you (should/can) make when you´re making the experiment. In this video (and in others i saw) you do exactly that! You started making fire when there was sun, and finished it in the dark. After a couple of F&@*@$, showing the difficult, you finally show it´s possible, in a funny way! Congratulations! Grade A+ lol
In your fantasy life, people probably listen to you when you bark orders and insult them.
In the real world (certainly where I come from) that sort of behaviour is likely to get you punched in the nose. On a good day.
You're welcome to criticize my presentation style or make suggestions about what you'd like to see. I even made a video where you are invited to insult me in the comments.

Not badly. The shouting was mostly driven by the frustration of not being able to do something that I had done perfectly many times in practice before I turned on the camera.
