Fascinating aircraft, isn't it? We live near a B-1 base and it's surprising how very quiet that huge machine can be when necessary ;) They take off all the time here w/o AB's (like in the vid) and the difference is massive.
With a comment like that, you must know a lot about B-1s. Everytime I have taken off in a B-1, the burners were lite, and it wasn't for an airshow. -- I guess things have changed since 1993
youre an idiot. b-1's routinely launch with 140,000 lbs of jp-8 on board. its not that big inside either. a simple equipment bay, two backseats, a toilet and two front seats.
So just becos the inside is small, doesnt mean it aint one of the worlds largest bombers. It needs to refuel in mid air because of its size, and it uses 3/4 tank of fuel just to get off the ground. And no, i am not an idiot, maybe i should have redone to wording. The inside is tiny. but the outside is HUGE! just try standing behind it when its getting tested. The heat is horrible
im a b-1 maintainer. youre not going to tell me anything i dont know. it launches with the fuel needed for its mission. why put 200k of fuel on a jet scheduled to come down 2 hours later? and if you were close behind it with engines running youd be dead. they were probably running apu's
It does NOT use 3/4 tank to get airborne. I was deployed with B-1's for 4 months and talked to many pilots. It's fuel burn is about 600gal per minute on takeoff and after burner cutout it can still fly for over 5 hours without refueling. Stop pretending to know shit.
lol, the amount of ppl who get grumpy easy here. I dont care about it anymore, im just letting u know what ive been taught. It depends what version it is u know. The B-1 at maximum load will sumtimes be refueled in midair about 30 minutes into mission. i didnt say ALWAYS!!!
Plus, i sed, try standing behind it when it was being tested. We were about 50 metres away, and its engines werent on full.
Oh my facts are strait. And of course its hot back there, and if you were 50 meters away i'm damn sure it wasn't in AB because it would have killed you. Yes they do refill sometimes with 30 minutes but thats only because they usually get dibs on the tanker over everything else. Sometimes if you wait the tanker might need to be somewhere else.
Yeah when i went to america i went inside one of these ( I was im my 30's and i had just left the army) and compared to some of the V bomber the brititsh used until say the 70's this is tiny. Compared to a B-52 which i still haven't seen or even a Tu-160 this might aswell no exist. I am not sure about the B-2 i would of seen one when i went to america and saw this but it was still secret i think.
The B-52 is larger by a little bit only. Its not that much bigger. The B-1 is more deadly than any other bomber, because of its speed, flight time, and payload. Sure its not the largest, but its pretty damn impressive. expecially the heat that comes out of its engines at Idol. When i was in Air Force Cadets, we went to the RAAF base near me and when we wealked behind it, it was really really hot. Not overwhelming, but pretty bad.
Reeve2222, me too it seems weird to see the video!

He was in burner, believe me, this plane cannot get in the air without burners lite.

lol...whatever.....it will fly just fine without burners... they aint loaded with bombs at airshows. They turn the ab's on for the show.
beergut111 2 years ago
It flys just fine without burners but it can't get in the air without them.
jaygdav 2 years ago
yes it will take-off without the ab's. Just takes a bit more runway and 2nd segment numbers change, etc.
anything else you wanna know?

never flown it, just sayin it will take off without them. Every plane with ab's can take off without them if conditions are right.

Ive been at an airshow where they had that, i went inside and its MASSIVE! and they have to refuel in mid air cos its too heavy to take off otherwise
