@justinr214 a hermit crab cant die just bc of a painted shell! -_- and dont reply to this sayin ohhh painted shells are toxic and the hermit crab will eat it! bc they mmostly make shells with non-toxic paint now! and i bet u there still alive!!
I might get one or two crabs. I dont want to put them in plastic/painted shells, but If I find a good sized natural one on ebay or something, How do you get them in? will they go in if they like it? Cause Im not forcing it in.
Nice video! But you should really buy a few natural shells. There are some really cool natural ones, and Online sometimes You can find shells that are carved.
my nana gave me a big white shell like that... it once had a HUGE hermit crab inside it... but she told me she ate it. she also thought we were gonna eat our hermit crabs. i was horrified!
Non-toxic ya...BUT.....if the paint flakes off...the hermit crab thought it is food and will eat the paint and eventually die...and painted shells for them will make them less active if u think they were, as they r force in painted shells....
If she/he wanted tips on how to take care of her/his crabs he/she would have asked! im sure she/he knows painted shells are bad, but what can u do? rip them out? NO. Give her/him a break geez!
please don't get crabs if you don't educate yourself beforehand. Get non-painted shells and get rid of the gravel, add twice the height of your largest crab, I'm guessing add about 6". You need brakish and freshwater for your crabs. Painted shells are a DEATH SENTENCE.
yes it is hun. they are scavengers and will eat the paint, the paint chips will get in the water, gravel isnt good for burying and it chips the paint off the shells making it easier and faster for them to get too. deep coconut husk bedding is the best out there, not smell, soft. crabs need 2X the height of themselves and they can bury and molt. crabs are not good pets fo kids that dont no what there doing.
All paints chip over time, and crabs have been known to at the opening of their own shells to get calcium/ ame the opening larger. It's actually not the paint that's the problem, it's the sealant they put on top. It's automotive paint sealant. So yes, all painted shells are a death sentence. And so is gravel. Hermies need to dig and molt. If they don't, they secrete the molt inhibiting hormone. Studies have proven that over time, they can die from hormone buildup.
Your right. painted shells are bad but they are NOT a DEATH sentence. My hermie Sherbert was in a painted shell for a year. I had so many natural shells for her to change into but she loved her painted shell too much. Well she changed into a natural shell and I took her painted shell out of the tank. I'm so proud of her!!! Well the point is, Sherbert is alive and well so painted shells are terrible and harmful, but not NECESSARILY a death sentence.
some painted shells are actually okas long as they dont have a lot of paint like most u'll see. and even the ones with lots of paint arent that bad. My parent own a fish petshop so thats how i know. Also post a vid of Sherbert! Id love to see what she looks like!
Thanks for the info! :) I don't have a video camera and I don't even know if I'm allowed to put videos on youtube! lol I know it's kind of weird that I joined this site. Are we allowed to post pics in PM? I could take a pic of her.
Your water dishes look a little shallow... it should be deep enough for the hermit crab to submerge his entire body and shell so he can refill his shell water, a little supply of water they carry around.
And also, the paint from painted shells will flake and the crabs will eat it. The paint is toxic to them. Get some natural shells for them to change into.
you clean there tank atleast 2 or 3 times a weekand you probly need a 10 maybe 5 gallon tank for 4 or 5 hermit crabs i have 2 rate now but alwas pick the active ones to take home
Spot clean every day if you have sand substrate, and every other day if you have Eco-Earth substrate. These are the only two acceptable substrates. Deep clean 1-2 times a year.
It depends what kind if u bought him and he was in a tank full of water or if u bought him and he was on land i think that only SOME may be able to survive both i got one and he is a land hermit crab.
Hello! Your hermies are so cute! I'd just like to make a suggestion. You would probably like to put in natural shells for them to move into. I know that it's somewhat harder to find them among all the painted ones at pet stores. Also, I understand that most hermit crabs come in painted shells already. So, just a suggestion from one hermit crab lover to the next! :D
hermit crabs are incredibally stong i have 4 in a 10 gallon (landcrabs) and i have one of those gerbil woodland hideaways for them beeing they love it and they can move it
the crabitat in this video is to small i have a big aquairium tank i put my crabs in they have many places to hide,a hut natrul plants i planted shells and neccesary things they need to survive but all and all i spoil my hermit crabs with stuff to make them happy and lovable pets and im actualy thinking of getting more!
they are very cute to take care .hermit crabs are omnivores so you can feed rice or veggies like fresh carrots or apples thay love that foods like that but dont feed it to many hermit crabs are slow eaters.
I wouldn't say they're too easy to take care of, but they are pretty self-sufficient once they have the correct set-up. Like narasoft1214 said, they do like fresh foods like apples and carrots. They'll eat most fruits, veggies, seafood, and flowers (but some are poisonous to them, so be careful!).
There are a lot of great websites out there, so make sure you educate yourself if you're still interested in getting them.
Do your get their feet covered in sand then walk through the water like for no reason at all? mine do,it's annoying because your supposed to keep the water clean! and they won't stop walking in it with sandy feet,o and do you give your a bath every morning?? i do,then they all come out and run around!! YD
come on it has a painted shell on that isn't the owners fault. I have four crabs all of them changed into a natural shell but one. I have plenty of shells that will fit him but he won't take them. He likes his shell and I am ok with that if he dosen't want a new one.
Venus would love a cage like that with all that stuff to walk on. He is pretty lazy unless hes out of his cage. But then i have my dog to yell at for chasng or biting at him!!!
the paint is harmful -- the correct humidity conditions will cause the paint to moisten and chip off inside food and water dishes. They may eat it by mistake and die. I think that's how my first crab died he was naked and then died (and trust me it wasn't his molted exoskeleton he molted and survived before).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
there is some kind of exercise for hermit crab..this exercise will make your crab strong.just put the crab on the table and then bash it with hammer..until you have a piece of crab..
Oh never knew that thanks for the information. Just got rid of all the painted shells in the tank. I have a question also. Humidity, temperature, sand, water, and food are always right but my hermies are so quiet now at night. Been going on for about 2-3 weeks now. They just dig themselves in and sit there. I check the sand in the morning to see if they moved but nothing. If you could help thanks a lot.
If that's Calcisand, it's not good for your crabs. Any dyed sand is bad because the product they use to dye it is poisionus to crabs. Is that sand even deep enough for a molt? It must be at least 2x your largest crab. Painted shells will kill your crab. Get some natural shells for them to change in to and then throw away the painted shells.
I do agree with crabbyknitter as well. The actual paint may not be toxic but the stuff they use as a sealant for the paint is. They can be VERY harmful to your crabbys and they are inhumanly forced into the painted shells. Studies show that most crabs would chose a natural shell instead of a painted shell when given the choice.
Other then the fact that you should probably get some play sand or eco earth for substrate and some natural shells, looks great!
I'm sorry, but I do just have to say do NOT take him to a local pet shop, chances are that they will know absolutely nothing about hermit crabs let alone be able to tell you why he is sick. Research online.
I would not suggest any one to buy hermit crabs, I have two strawberrys and they are EXTREMELY aggressive. They escape from there tank constantly and attack every thing they see! Ive had several incidents including the time my crab PLIED my fingernail off and sniping off the tip of my cats tail. They are stronger then they look. Not good for pets!
really nice crabs they all look healthy and the habitat looks good 2 man my pet shops near me dont even have nice crabs and habitats that good great job but doesn't the paint hurt them
painted shells can be poisonous. if you have them in the tank replace them with natural shells for them to change into them. not many people know that paint can be poisonous. other then that, you have really great crabbies. your indo is gorgeous!
Hey, nice hermit crabs and such. Although my main concern is about the painted shells. It just sorta looks degrading and humiliating, whether they care or not.
they actually do a kit in the UK for painted hermit crab shells, it contains the necessary shells for growing on crabs and paints, sealers and even fur for christs sake, its like some sort of Pimp My Crab kit

painted shells is not good for hermits because they can contain harmful germs and bacteria, makes sure you get natural shells, or if you get painted ones put it in boiling water for a liike 10 minutes to kill all those germs. well u'll need hard paint for that. but i do not reccomend painted shells. i collected mine from sea and rinsed it in boiling water. ^.^
that is a rilly cool cage you got there O and no affens the painted shells are rilly gay painted shells are rilly just to make your hermit crabs look dumb well to me O and that musec that you can hear RILLY FUCKING BUGS
is it true that painted shells arent good for ur lil crabbies becuz i have 3 and two of them have painted shells.. so i get them natural shells netxt tiem they molt? =\
I have 1, small orange hermit crab, Henry. He is pretty small, can easily pick up between index finger and thumb. His cage is full of stones (is that ok?) A feeding dish, a sponge, and a little log for him to rest in. He usually sleeps in between the log and sponge lol. How big can they grow to be? Mine is about 1 1/4 inches..
hello :) cool setup, you have very active crabs...but as it has been mentioned before, you need to have at least 5 inches of substrate (i would really suggest ecoearth cocohusk). Stop by this forum, hermitcrabassociation(dot)com. There is so much to learn from all the members and it will also give you a new love of hermit crabs because all the members there are fanatics for the little critters. I hope to see you there :)
Cute! Painted shells are actually not good for the crabs as they are likely to eat tiny bits of the paint. They often state it is non-toxic. Perhaps for humans but there is no proof it isn't dangerous to crabs.
Hope they have some fresh clean shells to change into.
Cute! Try not to use gravel or painted shells, both are hermit crab murderers!

They can grow the size of a baseball( 2 inches ).
Yes the substrate is ok .

hello :) cool setup, you have very active crabs...but as it has been mentioned before, you need to have at least 5 inches of substrate (i would really suggest ecoearth cocohusk). Stop by this forum, hermitcrabassociation(dot)com. There is so much to learn from all the members and it will also give you a new love of hermit crabs because all the members there are fanatics for the little critters. I hope to see you there :)

You really need to work on your hermit crab's home. Try going onto some hermit crab sites. I did, and now my tank is great.

You need about 6 inches of sand or they wont be able to molt. BUt cool tank set up.
SGDeGalvez 4 years ago
thats not true, for the size crabs that she has, she only needs maybe 3 inches.. 6 would be for a larger PP.

Cute! Painted shells are actually not good for the crabs as they are likely to eat tiny bits of the paint. They often state it is non-toxic. Perhaps for humans but there is no proof it isn't dangerous to crabs.
Hope they have some fresh clean shells to change into.
