  • Gilmour! Release the Hounds!

  • of course it's great it's Floyd.

  • Dammit I'm torn between this and the studio version now but its great

  • I dont know why people are complaining about..."physician / magician" lyrics... I found it extremely awesome

  • The final draft of the lyrics are MUCH better. Same goes for the solo. good work guys. pure brilliance

  • You can hear some of the ideas in the solo here that were used in the final product. Amazing.

  • Roger sounds like Mr. Burns on this recording :)

  • holy shit this is tryppy... but amazing!!

  • roger singing like dylan and very dark but then comes daves vocals to lift me up again . very historic in the bands make up ok that my final verdiict go. roger second verse can still be used to reach these kids today enjoy life on the bright side of life like monty python sang v

  • This is the version there was a massive argument over notice more guitar up front less orchestration I guess they compromised and took sections from both takes.

  • Dear Roger you have translate inner voice of human nature....David you give a shape to the inner vibrations of human soul...Every single day, wouldn't be the same without this track...

  • Listen

    I am a physician

    Would you like a circumcision?

  • what is he saying at 0:50 Till 0:52

    ?

  • is the final solo a KEYBOARD SOLO?

  • @supermoserre Because i play guitar by myself

i think He is Using effects

But it is gilmour at the solo

  • Have your fingertips gone numb? Goodbye, goodbye Try and see the bright side Listen to some punk groups Rock and roll Go out and see some shows (guitar solo) Go out and see some shows Goodbye! Goodbye! Goodbye! Bye! (Put up?) Bye!

***Read the Lyrics from below to the top***

  • Your lips move but I can't hear you're saying When I was a child I had a fever My hands felt just like two balloons Now I've got that feeling once again I can't explain, you would not understand This is not how I am I have become comfortably numb

Wake up (light up)... Pull yourself together Get out and meet new people I'm sure they'll understand Come on... Put away the shotgun Yeah, have another blue one

  • Hello... Is there anybody in there? Is anybody bleeding? Is there anyone at home? Come on... I know you're hiding I could hear you screaming when your neighbors Called me on the phone

Listen... I am a physician And I can handle your condition Like a magician If you show me where it hurts

There is no pain You are receding A distant ship Smoke on the horizon You are only coming through in waves

  • From what I've heard, the song was actually based around a really long Guitar peice that Gilmour had been working on for a while. Waters forced him to scale back, and endlessly edit it into what we have now. I give the final version an A definately, but this is also incredible to hear.

  • @Grahamx227

Not quite! David Gilmour had just finished his first (and brilliant) solo album "David Gilmour" in 1978. The other musicians (Rick Wills and Willie Wilson) had gone home when DG had a little time left at Superbear, France when he put down a piece on a "high-strung guitar" as he puts it.

That acoustic guitar part together with DG's vocal: "da do da do da do da doo doo"'s made up the chorus of Comfy Numb! And that's about it!

Roger Waters did not MAKE him change anything!

  • am i the only one who likes this version more than original one?

  • @Calaveranzo

    No. I like it equally!

  • It's as though the song has no meaning...

  • I don't hear keyboards. Is Mr. Wright, the magician, in this?

  • And if these were the lyrics that ended up on vinyl, all would have marveled at the clever turn of the phrase. All what you're used to hearing...

  • more psychedelic then album version

  • "Listen, I am a physician and I can handle your condition - like a magician!"

Wow, Roger. That is just awful. So glad that was changed.

  • Hey man, where'd you get this version? CD, Download

  • I kind of like this. Wow.

  • Interesting version, but I can see why these weren't the final lyrics. Very gauche sounding. But I do like the overall feel of it, despite it being lower quality than the official version. The background noises actually make this version, it would have been good to have those in the version that did come out back then.

  • This is not a song. It's life

  • i like this version a lotttt... its awesomeness. i like the lyrics Roger is singing... the lyrics explain things very well.. this version is much more eerie during Roger's part... i like how Roger screams a lot in it

  • i like every version.. but especially this one and the live pulse version

  • lyrics not so much, but great guitar (I think its Roger playing it) though totally different style from David

  • I feel like overdosing.

  • "Listen... I am a physician... I can help with your condition... like a magician!"

Ummmmm, okay dude. Whatever you're smokin', I want that shit.

(thank god for the drafting process, eh?)

  • im actually considering doing this version with my band instead of the original lol gotta admit itd be pretty radd cuz people would be like THOSE ARE THE WRONG WORDS and id be like NO THEYRE THE ORIGINAL WORDS lolololol

  • @sacrifyce4 Whenever I sing this with friends I like to do the "Listen listen listen" part! It seems so much more... sinister.

  • The lyrics in this version make the doctor sound more like a therapist than a physician.

  • @vbooy57 very good i think that was on purpose though itd make alot more sence for it to be like that.

  • He actually uses a good bit of the second solo during the live performances, like at Pulse.

  • Me gusta mucho más esta versión, suena más psicodélica, triste, misteriosa y aterradora.

Sin duda unos maestros, estos entes.

  • If someone just could mix this music version with the lyrics of the other version and you had the best song ever!!

  • @Snaavelstopic

A FRESHER VERSION, AN ALTERNATE.... NOT BETTER PER SAY.

  • The last solo reminds me of the entire Animals album for some reason.

  • Very interesting demo

  • Lyrics are still good. Magician/Physician was a lol though

  • really dug it. it had a lot more edge to it in some parts than the final album version did, but at the same time, it is still a demo. gilmour''s last solo didn't have anywhere near the power it does now.

  • I prefer this version musically, but I prefer the lyrics of the final version :)

The music seems more stabby in this, some of the lyrics in this one are great, but they don't flow as well as the final version

  • hah! david got it right from the beggining

  • So GREAT, so INCREDIBLE, so FANTASTIC, sooo AMAZIIING!!! *.*

I love you Pink Floyd, from the day i was born till the day i die <3

  • Kumagaroo I think you are right well done!

  • Needless to say it's not the classic we've heard a thousand times before. The most you could say is that it's interesting.

It's intersting to note Gilmour kept the chorus word for word.

Clearly he knows what is classic and what isn't.

  • @aberdown

Wasn't the chorus written by Gilmour, which had the "doctor" parts added when they decided to put it onto The Wall?

Generally this is a Gilmour song mostly, it was meant to go on his solo album at first

Then again, I can be wrong ^^

  • I've collected pretty much every 'known' Pink Floyd demo out there. My favourites have to be from The Wall and The Final Cut. This demo of Comfortably Numb was a fantastic work in progress of what would become one of the most recognizable songs in music history

  • They should have stuck with that cool sweep between Roger and Dave between verse and chorus.

  • @SamTalmadge they did dumbass

  • @frusciante319 Fuck you. I mean how Roger's "s" carries into the chorus. They didnt do that in the real version dipshit. Shit the hell up.

  • This is from a session that Roger Waters did in his basement... there was a cassette... i have a copy

  • Who wrote this solo? Gilmour or Waters?

  • @durillo Gilmour, Roger didn't write the solos.

  • Roger Waters was the creative genius of pink floyd and the mind behind the WALL and DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

  • @HashFloyd No. Dark Side was written by all of the members

  • @HashFloyd No, Waters wrote the majority of material for the wall, but Dark Side was a collaboration.

  • @mangahead21

Simply not true... even Gilmour himself admits DSOTM was roger's "baby".... Idea- all roger, all the spoken word stuff- all roger, lyrics-all roger, the music was largely roger too. The into to time, obviously the last two.. Money obviously... the only other guy who can lay claim to any contribution was really Richard.. he wrote a fair share of the music. david just busted out (awsome) guitar solos. didn't really contribute much more, and Nick was just Rogers bitch.....

  • @SydPring You're wrong, this song started with the solo of David Gilmour at the first place, only then Roger added the lyrics and all the rest ;)

And honestly i didn't like the way you talked about David and Nick, each and every single member of Pink Floyd, wether is Syd Barret, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright, all of them played they're important parts on the great rock band that PINK FLOYD was ;)

  • @SydPring your right about mostly everything lol. Roger was the driving force behind the Pink Floyd, he always will be. The only thing your wrong about is in the documentary Gilmour says the Wall was Roger's baby, not the Dark Side. Although the Dark Side was all Roger too. Lol. You could tell when Roger left how much different they were they totally moved away from the concept album, which was Pink Floyd's signature, and they could never recreate the magic of the band as a whole.

  • in this video the voice of david gilmour is so beautiful

  • after hearing a shitload the finished version this sounds weird but great

  • I love the lyrics they're great

  • O wow this is way different but its great!!! =D

  • Roger Waters screaming in the background sounds so sick and appropriate in this song. It's a shame he didn't get many opportunities to do this in songs. This version is definitely the darker one. It also sounds amazing the way it goes from dark and suddenly it goes into the chorus with Gilmour. Only thing I didn't that I didn't like was the line "Like a magician". Other than that this is my favorite version of the song.

  • It's really cool to hear a different version of this amazing piece. the alternate lyrics are almost as good as the final lyrics. My only complaint is the physician, condition, magician line. that didn't work too well.

  • listen to the lyrics. understand the dilemma. realize the insanity. feel the desperation. know the message.

  • the rawness draws chills to my spine

  • I have The Wall's demo album. It's sick!!

  • omgg the fucking chorus sounds soooo sicck!Q

  • It sounds like Gilmour must have ben told to sing more intensely for the actual real thing by Roger. Or else he just sounded different that day. He seems to sound different every time often. I must say, his voice allows him to sing pretty much whatever way he wants. In songs like "Young Lust" and "Time" he sings a different style completely. I don't like the way he sounds on Comfortably Numb of late though.

  • Being the great lyricist he is, i think roger would be a little off about the magician / physician lyrics... but aside from that, its fantastic imo

  • I think he should have kept the "Is there anybody bleeding?" line. That was fantastic!

  • Comment removed

  • No; it's too grose. The picture that comes to mind is too much. And also, the rest of the lyrics would then not make sense.

  • what are you talking about? its a demo.

  • I actualy found the lyrics overall to be super, super weak, the magician part for one, the "go see a punk group" a second, the whole "go out and meet new people" section a third, "I know your hiding" a fourth, ect, ect.

Its not just the words but the phrasing of them, they don't flow very well at all imo.

Not that any of this matters, this was just a demo/draft and Roger gets an A+ for the final copy he handed in!

  • @PoliticsAddict

If you can praise you can criticize can't you? So people can say they like the demo but if you say you don't it dosent make sense because its a demo? ok.......

and yes I understand pink floyd quite well and the wall, that dosen't mean I have to "love" a demo song. You can understand and be a fan of a band and not "love" all their songs, escpecially demos.....

  • Some people in here are quoting lyrics that they said they liked, are they going over the top?

I guess not since theire being positive but I guess if you have a negative opinion its over the top......

And as for me saying he used the wrong words, theres much more to it than just that, I'll even quote myself here,

"Its not just the words but the phrasing of them, they don't flow very well at all imo."

  • that doesn't make any sense, "the words don't flow very well" gee ya think, its a demo! so it's a meaningless statement and all your doing is trying to pretend you can write better lyrics, or that you are roger waters. guess what, your not! so just relax with your lyrics obsession and just enjoy the meaning of the song. theres a reason roger used these words and phrases, because it describes a certain mentality, mood, idea, etc.

  • Trying to pretend I'm better? wait what?

Now not liking these lyrics = trying to be better than waters? WOW

You just proved to me that your just a pissed of fanboy that can't take a shred of criticism even if its on a demo of all things.

I can't imagine how emotional you would get if I said their was something I didn't like with the final product, geez, how predictable......

  • again your displaying your remarkable ability to not understand my point. my point was and is, that you are pretending to have some high level background in the music field, especially lyrics and how you form good phrases and develop a song meaning, by criticizing a demo. but you failed, so just stop trying to validate your meaningless point. just give in to the ultimate lyricist roger waters, while simulaneously realizing this is just a demo.

  • Where did I say I have "high level backround" in the music field? Where did I even suggest that?

Better yet do I need any of that to dislike a demo's lyrics? NO!

And an opinion can't "fail", my opinion and remakers are still 100% valid and you may disagree with them if you like but I could care less because its my opinion and your not gonna change it with the logic you have been using!

Your just a pissed off fanboy that can't handle the slightest critsism even of a demo, pathetic...

  • your running away from what you originally said, you said "I found the lyrics to be super weak". who are you to say they're weak, are you roger waters? and besides it's only a demo. and you said I'm the one who can't take criticism, how about you can't take some lyrics to a demo. all i said to you at first was "what are you talking about? it's only a demo?" and you went off on a tangent about how the phrases were'nt right, and lyrics were wrong. you aren't a lyricist,so either listen or shut up.

  • I'm not running away from anything, I stand by what I said 100% as its my opinion, why the heck is it so hard for you to understand that there are people out there with different opinions than yours?

Who am I to say there weak? A longtime listener and fan of the floyd, I can say and think whatever I want about the lyrics as its my personal opinion, you dont need to be waters to have an opinion on his song, thats the stupidest fanboy thing you've said yet!

  • Quit being an ignorant, closed minded fanboy and pull your head out of your ass, your not changing my mind so get over it.

  • the bottom line here is this: a mature adult would appreciate the lyrics, regardless the format of the song, regardless the words used; phrases. YOU are a little girl, who cries and whines because you don't get your way. thats the bottom line..and you call youself a pink floyd fan HA!

  • Who said I didn't appreciate the lyrics? One can both appreciate something and still find fault within in it.

If anyone is acting like a stubborn little child its you! You just can't handle that someone doesn't hold the same view as you, a great sign of immaturity, that and calling someone a little girl.

If you honestly think that to be a fan means loving everything and anything a band does than you have no idea what a true fan is!

  • no i know what a true fan is, a true pink floyd fan LOVES this demos lyrics, the words and the phrases. A true pink floyd fan understands why roger waters would use these words, and phrases in this demo. a true pink floyd fan wouldn't try to play lyricist and post comments on youtube against certain lyrics. it just doesn't help the song, it's a demo. there shouldn't be anyone saying they find the lyrics to be super weak because it's redundant, its a freaking demo! get over yourself!

  • Your telling me what to love to be a true fan, WOW! Sounds more like a fanboy than a fan!

Once again your proving how closed minded and immature you are.

Have fun arguing with every one who has a different opinion than yourself, you'll find it nearly impossible to make any friends but I'm sure you'll make a ton of enemies! :)

  • your the one being negative! you stop being negative and maybe you won't make enemies. i'm not your enemy, you just started arguing with me. you started this!

  • Yes, technically I am being negative, but not towards any person but towards the lyrics in a song, I fail to see how my views and opinions such as these would cause me enemies in less those people where super sensative towards my opinion.

And no I did not start arguing with you, YOU started arguing with ME!

My first comment is a reply to "phasher" in which I shared my similar views towards the lyrics. You then came at me trying to correct my views and thats when the arguing started.

  • well then, i guess we agree to disagree. but it's been a contentious and well fought over subject, i do appreciate your participation in it. so long.

  • agreed, good day sir

  • You don't know what a true fan is. It is different for each person. oh but wait your a politics addict, so you know everything.

  • @kenakuma funny how people are so quick to criticize a demo. people like you just want to sound smart. but you obviously know nothing about song writing..

  • @PoliticsAddict

Lmao, dude we already got into this like a year ago (check old comments).

Its my OPINION of the lyrics and I stand by it, if you disagree than thats cool, we each have are own opinion/take on them. It has nothing to do with my knowledge or yours about song writing to form an opinion on this!

But like I said we already had a really lengthy debate on this like a year ago in which we came to a respectable resolve. So peace out.

  • @kenakuma haha true..well, we agree to disagree then. Peace out.

  • @kenakuma well back then david wasnt a very good writer and that was before the wall was put together so there probably millions of ideas from the both of them that didnt combine very well, i mihgt be the only one but i kind of am attatched to the 2nd solo of this version its much darker, the other versions have a brighter backround, now put the other solos with this backround, particularly pulse i could really find nothing wrong with it. but yes you are right.

  • Comment removed

  • @kenakuma

You must surely and completely have misunderstood what this is about.

He says: Go and see some pop groups. nothing about Punk Groups.

Obviously you have NO knowledge of what Waters was speaking.

Oh!! so YOU award Roger Waters an A plus!!!

An' who the fuck d'ypu think you are??!

    CUNT!

  • @nickhirst999

By bad, I guess him saying pop instead of punk completely nullifies my entire statement/opinion you fuck.

It's my fucking opinion and if you don'y like it you can go suck on a fat cock you fucking dumb ass!

  • @phasher first of all, this is a demo. secondly why do you think they changed the lyrics? idiot...

  • @PoliticsAddict Erm, obviously its a demo, i was just saying that i like these lyrics alot aside from that one i said. Idiot

  • @phasher NO you were trying to to imply that roger would be turned off by the lyrics HE chose in the DEMO. so you are a moron, obviously roger didn't like the lyrics because he chose to alter them in the studio version.

  • Comment removed

  • Very different, but as long as Van Morrison isn't singing it, it's still great! ;)

  • Gilmour's voice are so sweet...his solo so sentimental, and roger, oh god, I can't explan that!

  • This version is so much better! Probably the musician in me but i feel the demo is usually the best cut then of course you work out the cracks. It really catches the feel of the darkness that is The Wall that we all know and love!

  • yeah, i agree with most of you: great version but the released one i prefer more

Really funny: The "Scream" is completely different arranged than in the final version. Cool thing!

  • This version is great. I love the alternate lyrics, although I agree with Anaben11 that the end of the first verse isn't too great. Still, this version probably would have been the most specific song storyline wise on the whole album.

  • Maybe if we always heard it done this way, we would like it better, but this is interesting anyway. However I'm glad they changed it too. LOL this version is growing on me as I listen to it. eerie

  • Great song the beginning is a little different but it's even great this version but I even prefer the other versions (PULSE, THE WALL)

  • Different, but amazing!

  • Thank God they went back and redid this song the way we all know and love because this demo is quite rough and lacks some feeling.

  • i have heard this song 2 years ago, i had to download this album, I really like this take, the more i listen to it the better it gets, and pretty sure it's better then the one on the album + PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER GO OUT AND MEET NEW PEOPLE..... COME ON PUT AWAY THE SHOTGUN... TRY AND SEE THE BRIGHT SIDE.... GO OUT AND SEE SOME SHOWS

bloody brilliant..... the'res another demo out there more like the pros and cons of hitchicking, i'm still trying to find it

  • the beginning, the first few seconds, of this version is epic I think. It sounds so heavy and mysterious. but the roger lyrics sound kind of ... cheap ... this position, condition, magician ... dunno.

But its great to see the development of such a great song. From the first demo tape more than 30 years ago till nowadays.

  • there were two different versions wrote for this song. Gilmour and Waters both wrote one and they couldn't pick which one they wanted to play so they just combined them.

  • this song woulda fit the theme of the wall very well.. but im glad they changed it :)

  • this version is more elaborate and specific in the lyrics. great version. ton of emotion and sadness.

  • yes indeed, it makes u kinda dizzy(in a good way) after listening it.

  • @PoliticsAddict

yea a lot of people think this song is about taking heroin. but its really about a doctor giving the main character of the story medicine so he can go on stage. very interesting version of this song. i like it

  • @sacrifyce4 What do you think that medicine is?...............Just a little pin prick,...........That'll keep you going through the show!...............Heroine. what do you think its about tylenol?

  • @TheYoung5791

watch that part of the movie.

  • @sacrifyce4 I have seen the movie over and over, through and through..It was a major part of my childhood....I listened to your heart-shaped box cover,......................You guys got it down! nice job!

  • @TheYoung5791 Its actually about a time that, on the Animals tour, Waters had hepatitis, and a doctor gave him horse tranquilizer so that he could perform the show.

  • @floydfan831 some days ago (even if i feel it was ages ago) i choked while coughing in a party (it was outdoors, so it was really cold) and got to the hospital all dizzy. while calming down, the "doctor/nurse" kept saying "he took acid! aacid!", of course i kept saying i didnt take anything, but neither my parents or my friends (which two were there) believed me, or at least they tried to calm me down in a really strange way (i was all dizzy and tachycardic). they gave me a mysterious pill,

  • @santiagodebellavista which i had to take in order to gain their trust! so you see, how vulnerable you are while dizzy, and in fact the pill they gave me actually gave me some sort of minimum hallucination.

of course its all ok, but you see how horrible they can treat you and how the choking and dizzy man was more lucid than a bunch of "doctors" and the people you love. i wrote an album about it, with no apparent meaning apart from showing who i am and how i reacted calmly.well, thats it.go floyd

  • @santiagodebellavista Scary, isn't it

  • @floydfan831 thanks man, yes it is!! even if you know these people havent been born spiritually, yet, and you've nothin to do but accept that fact and suffer internally a little' in the way. just have to take it happily and learn from them, despite their mistaken view, really, cheers, to all floydians

  • good solo

  • чем-то даже лучше оригинала...
