@SkitterySmokey I know I lived there for 4 years, and the sun hardly came out, the beach was dirty as hell, and there were homeless meth heads and every corner
my great-gradma told me about the sadest thing that happen when this tsunami hit.
some couple want to a bar just to get some thing to drink real quick because they had thier kids in the car right when they where going to leave the tsunami was comeing so the people working thier at the bar took them up stairs but the kids where still in the car the mother and father tried all the things they could ,but could not get there so the 2 poor kids died R.I.P
Interesting to see at least two buildings from 1964 are still there today - the former Surf Hotel and (when I lived there) McKay's Market. They can be seen at :23, where the McKay's building is the large L-shaped building just left of center, and the Surf is the tall building at the left edge of the picture. At the end of the video I think the long building may be the building at Battery & B sts. (check Google Street View).
Crazy to see all those old cars like that. Cars of today would probably just fall apart. It's 7:14 and the news said today crescent city will be hit at 7:23am with tsunami waves. Where did this old earthquake originate from?
I grew up here - My uncle Bob Doan owned the Ice plant for years before he died - at the time of the tsunami I believe his father in law Art Ames still owned it. He told me his story of that day - after most had gone to safety he had to drive back down to the plant to shut off the power, on his way back he could see the wave in his rear view mirror - said he had never drove faster or was more scared. As it turns out the waves hit both sides of the ice plant, and the business was saved !
@Dezmol1 I believe your family and my family are friends...my grandfather Bud Clark worked for the Sheriff's Dept at the time and my mom opened the front door when someone came in the middle of the night to get him for help after the tsunami hit. I know my grandpa was friends with Bob Ames, I believe he was at my grandpa's funeral a few years ago in CC.
@elisabethhumboldt My mom still lives there, her name is Connie Carter. I'm glad this week's tsunami didnt hit the town this time, although I'm sure losing the fishing boats will financially impact many residents.
a long time ago they used to consider the good friday quake an 8.4 magnitude quake. But recently I have noticed that they have upgraded the quake to a 9.2 calling it the second strongest recorded earthquake in history. Viewing the destruction clearly reflects a 9.2 quake. But it must be remembered that it was originally recorded as an 8.4. 8.4 and 9.2 is a pretty large margin. The idiots at the U.S.G.S. should refine and attempt to perfect the method used to grade earthquakes.
I heard 2 seperate tsunamis hit that day. The first one hit and then everyone thought they were safe and some hours later when people were helping to find people another larger one swept in and killed a bunch of children and people. Really sad. I didn't know Cresent City was that far north. I live in the Bay Area and my mom told me about it. it happened the year before I was born.
The first wave hit at about 11:40PM on Friday and the second at about 12:15AM on Saturday. Twelve hours earlier and the loss of life would have been vastly greater. I was there. Our home was about four blocks above the run-up and my dad and I were downtown viewing the damage by 1:00AM but ready to run for higher ground if there was a third wave. I recommend a book, "The Raging Sea," by Dennis M. Powell, for more info. He has some details wrong, but it is a gripping account.
OMG, this swept 4 children off the coast of Oregon, my dad's cousin babysat them, (I live an hour from the beach),, I didn' realize there were more people killed, !!
Although I've grown up here all my life I don't think I've ever really seen this footage. My relatives tell me the stories of what happened that day, but you can really tell the devistation here and need to remember it will happen again.
This is crazy. I have a family friend who lives in the house on the right right when you come into crescent city./...They said they say the tsunami hitting the whole city from their house...crazy stuff
For the record, the earthquake was determined to be 9.2 on the Richter scale. This important because the measurement is exponential, not additional. I was living in Anchorage, Alaska at the time. It was a defining experience watching our house crack in half and the car bouncing like a rubber ball in the driveway.
WOW...just wow....even the visual of your car bouncing is terrifying..my only earthquake memory is, thankfully, a small one: a small temblor near Mt, Pinatubo when my father was stationed at the base nearby. The car was up on jacks and it was swinging like a pendulum. I cant even imagine what you described.
Born there. Still have family there, so I agree totally with humboldtchik. Beautiful scenery, Ocean, redwoods, rivers....last time back was 2005. Time to go back home again.

The tsunami reached to crescent city, eh? What shape were the trinkets that Gideon took from the conquered Midianites? What is the shape on all the middle eastern flags? mmm... Is it the crescent moon? Isn't that the symbol of the moon god, ba'al? (aka bel, aka baal aka allilah aka allah)? I wonder why God struck on Ishtar's day? the sun god (aka Ashteroth aka Easter.) isn't the same as the moon god... but both ARE demons posing as gods. So, I guess I get it.
Good Friday... the day before the pagan celebration of Easter (originally for "Ishtar", the sun god). If you will do a study of major quakes, you will find that many hit on the dates of pagan holidays, and churches are destroyed. the Lisbon quake, the recent Peru quake... check it out. And be careful what you worship!
no it predicts the world ends 2012 because 6 cultures predict the same thing including the bible and that same day the earth and sun and milky way align with each other so all the stuff in the milky way is bareling torwards earth and there is a comuputer program called spyders that has predicted alot of stuff since 1999 and it destroys itself dec 21 2012 and back to the milky way coming torwards us thats meteors when meteors hit earth there fire and how did god say he'd destroy the earth next?

@dearnikky
The 1964 tsunami was generated by the Alaskan Good Friday earthquake, a 9.2 in Prince William Sound between Anchorage and Valdez.
