Ash is kind of like Batman to some kids. sure, his strategy sucks, but ash is still the hero of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova. (in the anime that is) So to some kids, Ash and Pikachu are like heros. it may sound dumb, but Ash was my Favorite Hero when I was a kid.

@Vyz3r The old ones were stronger than any of the new ones. There is a reason why Ash's Pikachu and Charizard REPEATEDLY defeat new pokemon. Hell Charizard is the only one shown being able to either match or beat Legendary pokemon. Statistically in the games the originals tend to produce stronger pokemon as well. So both lore and game mechanics point to the originals being the supierior pokemon.
