well, did you see journey with steve?? if you didn't then you're in the same place I am.neither one of us would have any "backbone" to back our claims....
ya i saw them for frontiers and escape actually saw the escape tour twice, yes im old hahaha awesome band but steve did alot of talk singing and allowing the crowd to do the high notes for him ,, he sang the songs so differently that you couldnt even really sing along with him because he altered it somuch I did not like that at all, the present singer does a better job.
Really?? Bastard!! lol.I have judged by the videos on here and the Houston DVD wich I own,and on several songs he actually went higher. I do doubt that he could do that in every concer he gavet.oh and I almost forgot; If you own or ever listened to "journey Greatest Hits Live" you'll hear him singing just as high or even higher. it's a great cd by the way.
i own just about everything journey recorded including some of the side project stuff. Love it all. but 2008 - 2009 was a turning point for me, Now i LOVE the band especially live. They are a rock band now and even the lighter softer songs have a more rocked out sound musically and vocally.
OMG that is such a crock. I saw Journey at JFK for Frontiers in 1983 and at the Spectrum in 1986 for Raised on Radio, and do own the Escape DVD Live in Houston. Why would you talk such trash? I am not trashing the other singers but this is crap about Steve Perry.
In Steve's earlier years (1978-1982), he would use falsetto for effect, but not often: Most of his high notes were in full voice (he's a countertenor).
It really doesn't matter, I don't favor that vocalist enough to bicker to much about him. I did have the honor of seeing journey in the 80's a few times, was not impressed with S.P. To much ad libbing in the way he sang the songs and didn't remain true to the studio versions at all. I like the songs especially hits, to be performed at least similar to what was on vinyl at the time. Take care man. 2009 lineup rocks much better
That's bullshit: "Didn't remain true to the studio versions." Try watching some PRE 1986 Journey performances, then get back on me about that. Journey NOW plays the songs in LOWER KEYS so Arnel can HIT the notes.
perry had to tune down just to do 10 shows in 99 am i correct there? and even had to cancel the end of that small tour (voice shot) he's a smart man and i respect him for stopping when he was lsing it. No big deal i could care less about half step tuning. current line up is a rocjked out suped up version of what once was.
I got your message, lol. Steve did lower the keys himself on the FTLOSM tour (it was in 1994-1995), but they were never lowered when he was with Journey. I think he should've lowered them on the ROR tour because that's the tour that did permanent damage to his voice.
Also, I can't agree with todays line up being better than Steve's era, but I will say that today's line up is better than the ones with Augeri and Soto.
if you really appreciate songs being true to the studio version then your rooting for the wrong guy becasue pineda CANT sing them the same cus he dont have the tools.. listen to faithfully or any other song on the remake of the greatest hits, disc 2 of their last album.. and you will understand..
counter tenor or counter top he struggled to sing his own material live more times than not , ive seen it with my own eyes heard it with my own ears. Great front man but theres better singing high isnt all there is to ROCK singing. Bruce dickenson hits some unheard of notes also, but doesnt make him the best!
Steve Perry has a unique voice, not just singing high notes, it was the emotion he put into his singing that made him so great. In most live performances, you can see and feel the emotion. I just don't know how the man did it. If you will, please search journey, mother father live, I think it was 1981. Incredible emotion. It's almost like the man was living every word he sang.
ill do that :-) i love this band but honestly its the band i love not steve. never liked that style of singing but always appreciated it. God bless and happy new year ahead
Perry used falsetto for the notes at the very top of his range, but whereas many rock countertenors use some form of head voice or falsetto once beyond the tenor high C, Perry produced most of his countertenor range in full voice before using any form of falsetto. Truly extraordinary.
Perry had a faster than average vibrato which, when coupled with his ridiculously clean upper register, yet he still had an incredibly fat sounding high end used to full extent circa 1978-1982. Freak of nature.
With the ability to produce a falsetto heading into soprano territory, Steve Perry probably had (during his peak vocal years) a range spanning 4 octaves.
its not sshort cus its fast, just noticed there is a whole verse missing..
troubled times, cought between confustion and pain.. distant eyes, promises we madfe were in vain.. feeling that its gone. can change your mind. if we cant go on, survive the tide, love divides..
whats up with that?
on the other one of these journey on the green , instead of troubled times he said reckless hearts like 22 min and 15 sec intot he video..
steve isnt comming back to journey. the last thing he wants to be is a parody of himself.. he bowed out at the hight of his power.. althought i would LOVE to see him get back with Journey I totally understand if he didnt..
You got to remember this guy is a PERFECTIONIST and it would prolly drive him nuts trying to live up to expectations, or even his own godly image.. He is a tough act to follow.. In all honesty I personally woudlnt care how good he can sing, cus you know whatever he brings its gonna be sincere..
His rendition of this song in that 1983 vid fo the Japan show is better than this.they skipped a part of the song here, & the other guys did the backing vocals for the chorus part. Even the chorus part he sings in lower key. he seems out of air /tired.this is expected.tour takes a toll on a singer's voice & stamina, of course
journey rocks out loud!!!! oh my god i love all of their music and steve perry has got to be one of the best (if not the best) singers in the world!! rock on journey!! *headbangs*
They didn't play at that same tempo the entire tour. The reason is, there another video from the dates they had in Tokyo, at the Budokan and, it doesn't sound rushed.
ok my apologies on my comment!! steve is amazing, and i know how touring makes you very hoarse if you dont get rest. My comment came out wrong, i meant that his voice sounded worn, and that touring eventually would lead to his voice being permanently worn! i should have said it better!!
He sounds fine. All singers have their voices get hoarse occasionally. No man that sings that high can hit every note of every song every night on an extensive tour.
ahhh!!! disappointing!! i love steve perry, but you can see the beginning of the loss of his voice happening here!! if only he paced himself when he sang!
OMG he run a little gay in 2 10 :/ but we still know he is the best voice ever and straigh :)

A DIOS MIO NO TU

His rendition of this song in that 1983 vid fo the Japan show is better than this.they skipped a part of the song here, & the other guys did the backing vocals for the chorus part. Even the chorus part he sings in lower key. he seems out of air /tired.this is expected.tour takes a toll on a singer's voice & stamina, of course

The whole of the Frontiers tour was like this, with the exception of the shows in Japan.
jrnyfan4life 4 years ago 2
Yeah the 2nd verse has been completely cut out of this version.

this song rocks

This Concert is soooo AWESOME!! did they miss some of this song? they didnt do the 2nd verse (troubled times)
laddieola101 4 years ago
The video must've been edited (possibly for timing purposes) as I have the full concert in audio and the 2nd verse is clearly there.
jrnyfan4life 4 years ago
whered you get the whole concert in audio (i want that!)
christheman0236 4 years ago
Various bootleg sites will no doubt have it up on their servers.
jrnyfan4life 4 years ago
when is this???
laddieola101 4 years ago
this was in 1983 during the Frontiers tour
zombiesgirlfriend 4 years ago
i thought so
laddieola101 4 years ago
Listening to it, it almost sounds like they were rushing through it when they did this?
Chris05161967 4 years ago
All the backing vox are on a tape, so the tempo had to be set before; presumably they played it at this tempo during the whole tour.
Walrus5150 4 years ago
They didn't play at that same tempo the entire tour. The reason is, there another video from the dates they had in Tokyo, at the Budokan and, it doesn't sound rushed.
Chris05161967 4 years ago
I just watched the original video, they are rushing like hell. They could freeking play, thiugh...

ok my apologies on my comment!! steve is amazing, and i know how touring makes you very hoarse if you dont get rest. My comment came out wrong, i meant that his voice sounded worn, and that touring eventually would lead to his voice being permanently worn! i should have said it better!!

who is who?

never mind. i had a brain fart. i didnt know it was journey for a second there
laddieola101 4 years ago
He sounds fine. All singers have their voices get hoarse occasionally. No man that sings that high can hit every note of every song every night on an extensive tour.
Pacfanweb 4 years ago
ahhh!!! disappointing!! i love steve perry, but you can see the beginning of the loss of his voice happening here!! if only he paced himself when he sang!
