It is my belief that people don't think the Lumbee are Indians because of how they look although I hear nothing about some of the enrolled OK Cherokee not being Indian if they don't look it. I am not hating on OK Cherokee though. There is a prejudice that some folks have - all people who claim Indian should look like Indians out West. I disagree with that. @Tritone creoles descend from Native Americans and African Americans and alot of Lumbees mixed with slaves back then (definitely not all of them but the darker ones are more than likely mixed) so yea that would be why they look alike

You're actually very close. Form the few genetic studies done, most of them are Scottish and African American by decent. All "Lumbees" are not of the same genetic ancestry though. It's a culture, not a race, regardless of what they may tell you. That being said, I've known some good lumbee people. Don't let the ignorant peoples comments on here give you a bad opinion of them. They're largely just very poor and uneducated. Simple country people looking for an identity.

@AlexEatsKittens Maybe you never been to 910 North Carolina area. I grew up here and there are several "brown" Lumbee Natives here. Same with any other tribe. Of couse you'll see mixed people. There are mixed people all over the world. It's fucking 2011. However, if you live where I live, you'll see alot that are NOT mixed with anything at all. And I can tell you the difference between a black/white person and a Lumbee native. To you they probably all look the same. To me they don't.

These people are no more mixed than Cherokee who were described by Europeans as a very tall "dark copper brown complexioned" people in early books of the 1700s and before. Obviously those people are for the most part exterminated and there is very little of that blood in the modern Cherokee who were largely the descendants of white Americans.

Indians come in all shades due to admixture. There are white and black-looking mixed bloods in other tribes but it doesn't seem to be a problem. The Lumbee aren't Indians because they don't "look" like Indians? If you google Kitty Cloud Taylor, an Indian woman married to a Black man, you will see a picture of their child who looks Black. Where does your line of thinking come from? Indians or Europeans? Our focus needs to be on the unity of all people because we are all related.
