I thought Maria gave up her American Citizenship and became a Greek Citizen so who owns these copyrights now and why are they here and stop blocking me remember the Elgin Marbles.
I have the feeling that the marvellous Maria Callas was a normal voice with extraordinary technique and not the reverse. I think she outstreched her good instrument to any kind of role out of sheer, monumental will power. They say that she had a very narrow and high palate, like a gothic cathedral, and that is the reason of her " bottled " sounds. Anyhow she was such a great vocalist and actress as to deserve all the admiration she has enjoyed.
Beverly Sills said she would rather sing the 20 years with the passion that Callas did, then the thirty she had. Beverly Sills was a humble, honest, great woman. She served her art as best she could. G-d, Fortune, Destiny, Hildago(great bel canto teacher and singer), genetics, a demanding cruel mother, and MOST OF ALL--MARIA's LOVE of MUSIC, conspired to bring us LA DIVINA! Maria's technique was EXCELLENT and allowed her to sing the largest repetoire of any Soprano in all the five female timbres
Callas is the best Violetta of all times. Past, present, and unfortunately I affraid ... future ! Actually, she is not only the best "Violetta", she is also he best ever Tosca, Norma, Lady Macbeth, Medea, Armida, .... and ... Oh ! well ! SHE IS THE GREATEST OPERA SINGER OF ALL TIMES !!!!!
Callas was incomparable. Sills had her strong points but she was a minor artist in comparison with the supernova of Callas. For more than 25 years Maria Callas has given me inspiration to continue as a musician. She gave everything to her public.
I didn't say her technique was flawless, I wrote that she was tremendously gifted technically and artistically. No need to engage in a discussion about the definition of flawless - it's rare. I would say Ponselle was close, and Pavarotti also. I suppose you can start out with "flawless" tecnhique, then abuse it and sound "flawed". What Callas did have always, was flawless musicianship and dramatic intelligence. In that sense she's never been surpassed. Touche to you too! I'm a guy.
Damn and I was gonna ask you to marry me! Any-who, I just said flawed, not flawless. Ponselle yes, Pavarotti... No way! Yes and yes on all accounts with Callas.
@Andante735 And for about 10 years .. to be perfectly honest, she did not do much wrong, vocally either. She never would have become as famous as she did, if she did not have a tremendous amount of vocal talent.. She is the century's only assoluta. period.
Yeah right - Beverly who?? How inane this whole line of discussion is. Now we've segued into the "best" arena. Sills was a tremendously gifted singer- both technically and artistically, and vastly undervalued by many. The whole Callas argument is old and tired by now - no one is and or ever will be Callas, regardless of how many millions of people can't move on from trying to prove it. "It's a shame and a sham that not everyone feels" she is the best? What type of logic is that?
Chill. I never said you weren't entitled to your opinions, in fact I thank you for them.. And the argument I make is for people who diminish what Callas did, people who would rather listen to Nathan Gunn or Natalie Dessay rather than discover singers like Bastianini or Callas or Simionato... and Corelli. I also never said she is the best... The title of my video is Kickin ass and Takin names. Sooo if YOU think logically you'd know that I think MC Kicks ASS! And you know she does:-)
I never suggested I felt I wasn't entitlled to my opinions - I expressed them and raised an issue about another aspect of this. I also never wrote that you thought she was the "best", that was someone else. Either way the I'm with you on all the rest - there isn't one singer today who can barely whistle a tune compared to Callas or any of the other legends of the past. It's all horse crap now.
Touche' my good man... or woman, either way you know what I mean. At any rate, thanks for listening to this! By the way, I do however disagree with your comments of Sills... I think her technique was flawed, BUT I think Callas' technique was flawed eventually as well!
Ce n'est pas une voix humaine, c'est une musique hypnotique qui vient des directement des Cieux. Rien de commun avec d'autres chanteuses, aussi bonnes soient-elles... C'est un son pur, un instrument, bien plus qu'une voix !
I posted this video in reply to those who diminished, Callas' ability as singer. The aforementioned comments were posted on a memorial video of Beverly Sills singing Sempre Libera. I agree with what you're saying, Bev Sills did SO MUCH for opera and I commend her life and art for doing so. I do however believe that she did not nearly measure up to Callas in technique, ability and just artistry over all. I apologize if this offends you, as I respect anyone who loves this dying art.
Beverly Sills greatly admired the work of Maria Callas.. She was a Callas fan. Most of the singers that know something.. love Callas. She set the bar.
Really?...Sills is still great. Come on now...

Pavarotti had near perfect technique as a young singer, it went off course later in his career. Don't kid yourself.
This certainly doesn't erase thoughts of Beverly Sills, quite the opposite.

I agree, one hundred percent. I don't know if I would say she is the only assoluta, but she remains the master musician... a genius.

There is no one like her. I suspect that she would have liked the kick'n ass title at a certain level.
