An X15 managed to hit Mach 6.72 in 1967, the fastest manned rocket plane flight to date. The first manned supersonic flight of the Bell X1 was in October 1947.

The tv series air power with cronkite was hyped as the history of flight from kitty hawk to the X-15 but it was just ww2 films like victory at sea A movie X-15 with charles bronson was a psuedo documentary
