Do you think Marvin and Donny Hathaway are up in heaven singing there songs together? Barry White said he and Marvin were getting ready to work on Marvin's next album right before he was killed. Now that would have been a classic album!
I'm such a Marvin Gaye fan and recognize that he is very underrated as a pianist...honey...I ran out and bought me a keyboard (keep in mind, I don't know how to play it) but that's just how much of a inspiration he has on me :-) I will learn one day though...
An age has come and gone. Now, we favor entertainers over true musicians and musical geniuses. Marvin Gaye would have never made in the current music climate; thank God his era was the 60's and 70's.
@braddyboy82 There are enough of us who grew up listening to him, we'd still be following him. He was a musical genius and a poet of the times. Marvin had an unusual way at looking at the times and speaking it in his music. He sang what we felt. That never gets old. Trouble Man is one of the most beautiful arrangements I have EVER heard from ANYBODY.
It was the likes of Marvin Gayes music that kept people moving through the worst social and economic depressions of their times. We need more of this right now. Right on brother. God bless
so funny how some one who passed before you where born can just spark a fire in you soul. i love marvin because his love for music is so obvious. oh my goodness he was so great at what he did.
We as Americans did not appreciate him enough. There is still music that is untapped out of his style. I how that between all this rap, hip hop, we get back to sound of the foot patting highly poetic music that tells our life stories. Very Great Man!
We as Americans did not appreciate him enough. There is still music that is untapped out of his style. I how that between all this rap, hip hop, we get back to sound of the foot patting highly poetic music that tells our life stories.
He feels so deeply and gets emotional. This feeling quality makes the best musical performers, but so often leads to drugs to help dull the pain. Seems like all the greats have had these issues. Our crazy world, our human experience.
the only other person who plays with that passion and soul on the piano like this is Aretha Franklin and both came up in the Detroit black music scene where they honed their skills with the best players, singers in the world.
I remember this tune from yesteryear, good times and bad times, had a lowdown bastard of a stepfather whose throat I would rip out with a snap of my jaws if i saw him today.
I can watch this a million times and I probably have already, but this is sheer genius, brilliance, marvelous!!!!! As much as I regard Marvin as the G.O.A.T. in terms of singing, his piano playing may actually eclipse his vocal ability. His nuances, innuendos, and habits are all characteristic of someone who mastered his craft and can simply play at an exceptional high level at any moment's notice whether it's in front of a camera or relaxing at home. God Blessed Marvin Gaye!!! R.I.P!!!
thats got to be the best video ive ever seen musical and funny hes so good you just enjoy it and wish you could join in with him I will watch this daily,
he can even push a piano in musically, off the street and then off brilliant
Damn Marvin! God blessed U with a such a beautiful voice. U would have made a helluva Quiet Storm DJ. Can you imagine calling up the station at 2 in the morning and rapping with Marvin Gaye about how much you love and miss your baby! Can you imagine the advice Marvin would offer, while dedicating a song to help sooth your misery! Let me stop before I get carried away! Love you Brother Marvin always. I sincerely hope that U finally found that very eternal peace and love you wished for the world.
@elmers000 Amen. That's what we all want. In his life, beyond, have found peace and that both sought redemption. His entire life was characterized by the same duo: love and hate, peace and war, joy and sadness, the enthusiasm and indifference, light and ocsuridad, success and failure: the rise and fall. Will never die, Marvin. I will always love.
The thing to me that displays Marvins genius is the fact that he never sang a song the same way twice, each singing was its own one off performance the song always changing . If you dont believe me watch some of the old ed sullivan were he had to lip sync, he couldnt keep sync cause after he laid down the studio track he never sung it like that again.
It's the age old difference between talent and genius, Haydn had talent and Mozart genius, Rachmaninoff had talent and Scriabin genius, John Legend has talent and Marvin Gaye had genius.
@bakman1000 Who compared John Legend to Marvin? John is good, but can he do that riff toward the end? Too many good players today want to be legends before really honing their craft.
Wow Marvin still surprises me! Such pure talent! I hope no1 flags me but at one point this reminded me of 1of J legends improv wid the piano. But Marvin is obviously wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more betta hands dwn.
the difference is marvin had soul! john lwegend has been trained to sing how he does...he lacks soul..maybe he will get it later who knows but right now there's no comparison between the two...dont get me wrong i like john legend,..BUT this is MARVIN GAYE...THE REAL LEGEND
I'm bless to live to the ripe age of 53, I recall these songs from the real back in the day.
It was truly wonderful. beautiful music from a beautiful person. god bless

A genius /legend - all the things he spoke of 40 years ago, have past - sad isn't it.
Today, we must try to change what is wrong, and make them right.
