  • I think it's partly about how the scoring system works and what the judges penalize (which changes with time) and value. Back then flutzes and lips were ok. Triple triples were valued (under cop it is simple addition while sequences are 80%) and even if slightly under rotated. Under those "rules" I watched this live in 98 and knew Tara won after her two 3-3s.

  • it was good but michelle deserved to win years later i watched it all again and could not believe that michelle with that unbelievable beautiful program lost

the only good that tara won was that we were freed from her

  • Tara OWNED this night. A performance for the ages!

  • it's just sad that if michelle (the real winner) had skated her performance later in the line-up that her scores would have been higher and she would have won - she would have gotten all 6.0's for presentation...... the whole leaving room for later people isn't fair and was one of the flaws int he old system it's a shame that everyone isn't judged equally - the quality of tara's skating was terrible i was just as shocked as she was at her marks (esp. for presentation)

  • @snofagun1814 Nope nope. Tara absolutely deserved this win. The judges tried SOO flipping hard to give Kwan the title but Tara's outrageous performance flattened everyone here. Tara skated with heart and courage in the most difficult Olympic program while Kwan skated like a scared rabbit on a simple, downgraded routine.

  • @allenglandlawns It came out later that kwan still had a hurt toe and her father told her to skate conservative. Tara was way better on every level possible.

  • @allenglandlawns A scared rabbit? Landing 7 triples with two lutzes (her lutzes were better than Tara's) is really "simple"? Michelle's choreography was also more difficult than Tara's (unlike Kwan, Tara didn't have any footwork or transitions into any of her triples). The ONLY thing that Tara had over Michelle were her 3/3s and more speed in her LP. Kwan's spirals and spins were better as well (Michelle spinning in both directions was more difficult than any spin that Tara had in this program).

  • @Karosanyo Well then by your accounts, Kwan should have been handed over the Gold like she so expected to. Lots of arm flailing fluff was all she thought she needed. No need for a 3-3...just stay up on her delicate toes and wiggle around. FYI Tara also had a hip injury. Kwan was out and out inferior and the OLYMPIC judges aren't fooled. Tara won despite the favoritism simply bc she skated better and even Frank agreed!

  • @allenglandlawns How do YOU really know how Kwan thinks or feels? You stating that Kwan "expected" the OGM is ignorant. Kwan even stated that Tara deserved her win and that her own performance was "stale" (I disagree with her about her performance). The Olympic and World judges always expected Kwan to skate her best to win. She was never gifted any titles like Oksana Baiul was in '94 (Nancy DID deserve to win the OGM). Michelle never had favoritism...

  • @allenglandlawns Arm flailing? No other female skater used their arms better than Michelle Kwan (she was the most musical skater as well). Kwan's program at these games and her artistry WAS better... I think that Kwan lost because of her shaky landing on her triple flip and she was behind her music (she skated much slower than at Nationals). She still gave a very good performance. Kwan's National performance was superior to Tara's Olympic performance, IMO.

  • @snofagun1814 Shouldn't a TRUE champion and COMPETITOR be able to skate at any point and still win.....Kwan was delighted with the draw and now it has become an excuse...TARA would have won this no matter the skating order....she is just plain superior to Kwan....TARA had to wait giving her more time to be nervous....TARA IS A CHAMPION AND BEAT the holy living sequins off of cowardly Kwan!

  • @getrealandsee Your favorite skater is not Tara, it is Sasha. You are on record for calling Sasha the greatest skater ever. So why are you bragging about Tara's success? Oh wait..,just had a flashback to Sasha's 2010 nationals LP...now I get it...when the skater you admire most isn't talented enough to beat Michelle you grab hold of a skater who lucked out. If you had put all of your energy into helping Sasha learn how to land jumps you wouldn't have to settle ROFLMAO!!!! Michelle is a LEGEND!!

  • @getrealandsee Sorry, but it's just HILARIOUS that a person who calls Sasha Cohen the greatest skater ever is posting about what a "true champion" is ROFLMAO!!!!!! Remind me, how many world titles did Sasha win? How many times did she skate two clean programs at Worlds, Nats or Olympics?????????

  • Tara was a better competitor as well as a figure skater than Sasha. Sasha was overall better in artistry and where Tara lacked the flexibility of Sasha's she compensated it through her moves and her personality. Michelle has shown pillar of strength in the way she presented herself and also by the way she performed. I think Tara should have been highly appreciated more as much as Michelle Kwan, but I think all of the three should have equal amount of praises for their contribution to the sport.

  • @anne91276 And what a sniveling whiny sobbing pillar she was on the podiums in Nagano and SLC....I disagree that Michelle deserves as much credit as Tara...Tara blew her away and treated the Olympics as the once in a lifetime event of huge magnitude...Kwan fully expected to be handed the Gold...Sasha earned the Bronze but seeing Kwan on that podium and watching her body language was priceless....

  • @getrealandsee Tara's Olympic LP was amazing. Overall, Michelle is a much greater champion than Tara because she didn't just win in the role of the underdog..she won, time and time again, as the favorite with all of the pressure. You are profoundly ignorant when it comes to sports, but people who aren't know the most difficult thing to do is to win when you are the favorite. Tara's wins all came when she didn't have that pressure..which which makes Michelle not just superior, but LEGENDARY!!!!

  • Hughes was 16 (not 15) when she won the OGM- undeservedly, IMO. Tara's win was justified, but I thought it was close enough to give it to Kwan who skated more conservatively.

I really enjoyed this performance by Tara though. I wish she had not retired from eligible skating so soon.

  • @NashfanVash You can't be conservative in that situation. Tara went for more than Kwan could do. Holding anything back when the score was so close and when you know how difficult your opponents program is.

    The correct skater won.

  • @randumo24 Michelle was too classy to make excuses, and though Tara certainly skated an amazing program, it's really worth noting that Michelle was coming off of an injury..and probably still not completely healed. I am not suggesting that the results would have been different, but too often people suggest that she was "conservative" due to nerves. No doubt her injury played a significant part in how she skated that evening...and I still think she deserved gold =)

  • @MissThingSings In a different year it would have won, but Tara was just a little better.

  • why?

  • @johny258 The fact that you need me to elaborate on why your post is juvenile just shows your ignorance....

  • kwan=crap

  • @johny258 What a juvenile post.

  • DAVE HYDE Commentary, February 21, 1998 Tara Lipinski made a figure-skating move Friday night that everyone can understand. She hopped. She skipped. And, as applause mingled with the thrown flowers, as figure-skating writers furiously changed every early-edition "Kwan" to "Lipinski" because of this upset, Lipinski ran across the ice and broke into a smile that underlined for everyone whose Olympics these had just become.

  • @getrealandsee No articles about your favorite skater, Sasha Cohen, winning multiple National and World titles under the COP system????? lolol

  • @getrealandsee: Did you notice that when Lipinski was announced at "in first place," NO ONE in the audience clapped??? Did you notice that? I think that says it all. I actually think there is a solid argument that Tara earned the gold here, but you act as if Kwan choked and was a serial killer, hehehe. Get a hold of yourself my friend. Kwan, in BOTH Olympics, was the FAN favorite, clearly, and that pretty much sums up her legacy.

  • @mlc2005 Well, I did hear the applause and cheers.....I did see the standing ovations....I did see the rain of flowers and teddy bears....this is the Olympics and Tara was representing the USA....do you really think that everyone in that arena was disappointed that Kwan LOST???? Perhaps you couldn't hear the audience because of Tara's joy or perhaps there was a moment of SHOCKED silence at the INTEGRITY and JUSTICE of the outcome!!! Face this....Kwan was propped but flopped:)-:)

  • @getrealandsee Hysterical that a person who calls Sasha Cohen the best skater ever refers to 9 time national and 5 time word champion, Michelle Kwan, as a flop...I forget, how many world and national titles did Sasha win? She couldn't even wrestle a world title away from Kimmie Meissner! When you look the word flop up in the dictionary there is a video of Sasha's LP at 2010 nationals, the WORST performance by an elite skater in HISTORY!!!

  • @mlc2005 And I just listened again and the audience was CLAPPING all the way....when her scores came up...when the board showed her FIRST....oh, the audience clapped and cheered....it seems that you think that the Olympics were the Michelle Kwan show and no other skaters were worthy of mention....nope...the Olympics are the OLYMPICS and poor poor Kwan got that slapped into her the Gold is mine because I am here face! Oh how sweet a night so very long ago....and the Brits were Thrilled!!!

  • @getrealandsee You're crazy!

  • @Karosanyo Nope...just honest and intelligent:)-:)

  • @getrealandsee Of course you would like that lame post...

  • @getrealandsee There is nothing even remotely "intelligent" about any of your vindictive, bitter and catty posts about Michelle Kwan.

  • @Karosanyo Sure there is...

  • @getrealandsee Maybe is your mind...

  • White Bitch! How Dare She Take The Kwan's ONLY chance for GOLD!!?

  • @videodude23 Kwan's ONLY chance? She had THREE and blew them all big time. Choked twice when judges were about to hand her the title and woosed out on a third she had no right to be in. And how many times did Tara need? ONE. She recognized the Olympic moment and skated like a true champion without any such favoritism for her.

  • @videodude23 -SHUT UP AND DIE BILLION TIMES BY SCARY DEATH & BURN ON LAST CIRCLE OF HELL!!!!!!!!!!U ARE NASTY DEVIL DOGES DICKTCH KOBELITCH!!!!!!SCUMMM BASTARD

NOT Bitch!-ARE ANYONE EXCEPT ONLY YOU & YOUR DADDY, FUCKED BY ALL NASTY HOMODRILLO-MENEN-SHITTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!TARA IS THE BEST OLYMPIC CHAMPION EVER!!!!!!FAR BETTER THAN Kwan'

  • Why can't skating be the same?

  • @Everybody who's getting on everybody's case for not liking the same skater: Can we all just agree that this is really good for a fifteen year old and move on? I like the New York Giants, my dad likes the Dallas Cowboys (American football teams), but we both enjoy a good game when we see one.

  • I like these commentators because they keep the "BLAH-BLAH-BLAH" talking to a minimum during the actual performance.

    Thanks for posting.

  • does anyone have this network's version of Kwan's program?

  • Tara skated that night to win the gold medal while Michelle skated to protect it. That made all the difference in the world.

  • @dsfddsgh Couldn't agree more. Not a Tara fan but the 3loop-3loop was fully rotated and awesome

  • well. it was wonderful but i dont like her, BECAUSE she is really a star : A METEOR, a falling star.hahaha. a meteor suddenly SHOT across the sky. where is she now.

  • @roderickingermany She sure is a star...won nats, worlds and the Olympics and moved on. A falling star? I think you must be thinking of another skater:) Tara accomplished everything she set out to and in the process transformed the sport of figure skating. Unlike someone else who hung on forever and ever trying to be the best of the best and failed miserably and made the sport of figure skating a JOKE!! Thanks, Tara...the USA is proud of you!!!

  • @getrealandsee (AKA Allenglandlawns) If Michelle is a failure with 9 national and 5 world titles then your favorite skater, Sasha Cohen, can't be feeling too great about her "career" lol! She couldn't even wrestle a world title away from Kimmie Meissner!!!!!! As much as you can't stand it, Michelle is more famous and more revered than Tara and Sarah COMBINED. She didn't need Olympic gold to become a legend!

  • Comment removed

  • @roderickingermany I don't understand your response to me...I didn't comment about anyone smiling.

  • Comment removed

  • @roderickingermany If you read below you responded to me...perhaps by mistake.

  • @MissThingSings ach, yeah, it was a mistake:-/

  • @roderickingermany No problem =)

  • @roderickingermany Doesn't matter where she is, but I'm sure she's doing great things. She will forever be known as 1998 Olympic CHAMPION! She destroyed Kwan to earn the greatest prize in her sport proving that it's all and only about the performance when it counted and not the reputation or pre-determination of results. She restored the meaning of honest competition in a sport marred by cheating and biased favoritism and it was GREAT to see this happen here and in 2002 with Sarah.

  • @allenglandlawns sorry, you still cant change my mind, however a falling star is a falling star

  • She is one of the reasons I was inspired to skate.

  • Thank God for the Olympic Judges!!

  • @getrealandsee Yes, thank God for Olympic and World judges...Sasha Cohen would be deemed the greatest ever by her delusional fans (like yourself!)...despite the fact that she spent more time sitting on the ice than she did standing upon it!

  • The Russian and Ukrainian Judges both wanted to put Kwan down in the rankings ( they always felt she was overscored vs Slutskaya and Butryskaya) and it is interesting they both both LIpnski ahead of Kwan knowing their TWO votes were enough to give her silver

  • she was the reason why I wanted to start skating when I was 4. Im 18 and im still skating today. I love it so much and I never want to stop. Watching this again just reminds me of how amazing she really is.

  • I really didn't like this program at the time.

  • I think Kwan was and is a much more elegant skater than Lipinski but the 3/3 combo and then the 3/3 sequence at the END of the program were REALLY impressive.

  • Beautiful free skate! But it just goes to show you how beautiful and dangerous the sport of figure skating is. Her triple triple combinations may have helped her win the Olympics, but the jumping ruined her hip.

  • @Greensleeves1984 After the hip surgery she had shortly after winning the olympic gold medal, you know that's not a regret of hers at all...lol....small price to pay for the olympic gold medal & fame (& money)...not to mention the great contribution she paid to her sport. Athletes get injured all the time..it was sooo worth it in this case.

  • @stefan7171 I totally and absolutely agree!!!!!

  • @Greensleeves1984 This program of Tara's is so joyful & 1 of the hardest technical programs ever....it's timeless & a joy to watch to this day...as much as I luv Sarah Hughes OGM performance, this program is much more joyful & freeing...makes me feel good inside & captures the kid in me (& I'm only 33) which all adults luv to connect with

  • @stefan7171 Don't get me wrong, I loved this program! I remember watching it when I was 13, and I was so happy that she won for the US. In fact, this is one of my favorite Olympic routines of all time, after Sasha Cohen's in SLC and Torino. I am just saying that figure skating is a breathtakingly beautiful sport, but it's also one of the most dangerous.

  • Whoa she is amazing!!!

  • Incredable talent. I remeber staying up late to watch this when I was 8 years old.

  • This Long is the strongest ever done by a women and a winning performance in any olympic games since today!

  • not sure about that. hughes had 2 triple-triple combinations and amazing spins and spirals. but still both performances were amazing

  • And I say this as a diehard Kwan fan.... I think this performance was much better than Hughes. Tara had a joy and uplifting spirit about her, and I just couldn't get into a 15 year old (hughes) skating to Rachmoninoff.. They made the poor girl look like a 15 year old grandmother. Tara nailed it here, and I wish we had been able to see more of her. US was very proud of Tara and Michelle that night!!!

  • @xlutskaya But if she were to compete today, she would be penalized for things like wrong edge for her 3Lz, because today's marking system is much more strict.

  • @xlutskaya umm no im pretty sure that there have been much greater performances by sasha cohen, michelle kwan, mao asada, and yu na kim. just to name a few.

But no doubt she was great for her time, but still.

  • @xlutskaya wrong, yuna kim was way better

  • Comment removed

  • @xlutskaya what about yuna kim just sayin
