tre404@ - here's what i got from wikipedia: "Bandstand originally used "High Society" by Artie Shaw as its theme song, but by the time the show went national, it had been replaced by various arrangements of "Bandstand Boogie" composed by Charles Albertine, including the big-band version performed by Les Elgart" - if it was called something else than Bandstand Boogie, do you know what it was? Wiki could have it wrong, and could be corrected...
@gladfan1989 .... Yes, but if it were, imagine the "talent" that would be "performing!" I shudder to think... best that "Bandstand" lives in our memories as a program that showcased mostly GOOD music. I think it ended when it was supposed to, in 1989. Clark had turned over hosting duties to others anyway... and it ain't "Bandstand" without Mr. Clark.
The Tune is actually called "Bandstand Boogie", written in 1952 by Charles Albertine , and found on youtube by the Les Elgart big band, playing from the 40s into the 60s. Barry Manilow then collaborated with Bruce Sussman and wrote the lyrics, which heavily referred to the show and it's great elements - like "...it's got a great beat and i can dance to it", and probably for the first time included - "I really dig the lyrics - it's all about ME on TV"....
@bluzdawg ... It wasn't called "Bandstand Boogie" until Manilow and Sussman got their hands on it in 1975. The last part of your comment is fuzzy... not sure what you're on about there, but... (I think you're referring to the lyric, "my baby's swoonin' ... in front of all of TV.")
@Tre404 - oh, and the reference to "ME on TV" was about several places in the lyrics, that offered insight into the situation where a person was seen on national television "..mom and dad are so proud...", "..the phones are ringin'.. "; the tune is littered with remarks about performing - "...handstand, grandstand..." , and at the end, "...I'm IN, I'm ON..". and many others.
@bluzdawg ...You're Wrong, Pal. The original Columbia record #40180, released in 1954, clearly states, "Bandstand Boogie", it is also called that on the 1955 Les Elgart Band of the Year Lp, which I own. "When Yuba Plays the Rumba on the Tuba" was the original flipside. Incidently, I despise Manilow's version of this song.
I almost died laughing! This was GREAT!! You should find a way to send this to Barry Manilow. After watching some of his concert clips, it's evident he's got a great sense of humor. He would probably get a real kick out of it!
man i have'nt seen dancing like thta since 1957 how come we can't cut loose like that naymore even though it sometimes hurts to cut loose like that i would still do so given a real chance and how come all those other peoples just walk on bu\y like they don't see this guy hmm weird!
I LOVE this song! Not a big fan of the dancin', but I gotta give 'im props for bein' brave enough! It's a wonder no one called the funny farm to take 'im away!
This show went through two generations in my family. My mom watched when it was in Philadelphia and I watched when it was in Hollywood. There'll never be another show like it.
Such fun. Really enjoyed it! Thanks for posting it. I have to say I was surprised at all the indifference of the people. Only guy I saw who got a kick out of it was the dude on the motorcycle. If I was there, there would have been two people digging it.
I could remember the first 10 seconds as like the music that Dick Clark says something like,"One week from today,we're back here with Donna Summer next week. And don't forget to watch for me on the "$20,000 Pryamid during the week,as well. For now,Dick Clark,...so long!"
@TexasAdmirer It's funny, I was born in 1986, and the show ended three years later. Having never seen an episode until the VH1 reruns in '96, I could still hear your dad's version of the theme and recognize it right away. I guess it's one of those themes where even if you NEVER seen the show, you can immediately go "Bandstand Theme". Your dad definitely wrote one of the classics.
This is actually called Bandstand Boogie on Manilow's CD. He plays and sings it with Donny & Marie Osmond at the end of the video of him with them I put up here.
this is where i learned to dance. i spent many Sat afternoons watch Bandstand. Barry Manilow is great, even now. i hope to go to Vegas and see him live before i die
Pokechoppah93- If I understand correctly , you are 15 years old. Also for being open to music to the past that helped shape the here & now. I also commend you for respecting yourself by standing up for what you like, even though you might get laughed at by other your age. I am a 47 yr male in Ks. I also listen to a lot of stuff that was made or remade before I was born. Even I still learn new things. Like the group that did the Shrek theme song was Smash Mouth, not Smash Mouth Pumpkins..lol
If u want to show how well u dance, do so. But, to malign the progression of the rock culture, it's great artists) and it's beginnings, just shows how STUPID YOU ARE. Respectfully, theGIBBshow.

You're on the right track, kid. Keep your head on straight. :P I'm only 15. I love all Barry Manilow songs.. as well as Johnny Cash, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty, etc. I hate all the modern stuff, minus Alan Jackson and George Strait. They're the only real singers left. God bless them, and you.
Agree about all of the older music, and I would suggest some Chuck Berry, Dion, Chubby Checker, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin among others. But I also suggest some good newer bands like Trapt, Buckcherry, Chevelle, Charm City Devils, Black Robot, Rise Against, The Last Vegas and Them Crooked Vultures. There's still some good new music, it just doesn't get much radio time, so you have to really look for it.

And because you're probably much too young to know, the American Bandstand was around a LONG time before music video and Jay Leno were even thought of. Those "buffoons" as you call them were part of the entertainment and showed kids the latest dance crazes, at least back in the 1950s and 1960s.
The video is absolutely the funniest video I have seen in a long time. You have a great and fun imagination!!! Thanks for sharing your dancing and comic talents with the world. from, Darren
